View Full Version : Northern Virginia anyone?

Hey all,
I'm fairly recently getting into the game and I have a few friends who are at least semi-interested in playing as well.
Is there anyone in the area who would be willing to meet and play at one of the local stores (like Game Parlor in Chantilly or Compleat Strategist in Falls Church)?
FWIW, we are older (30s) experience gamers looking to play mostly for fun, not for blood.
Thanks!
By request, here are the current House Rules. ;)
Northern Virginia Area A&AM House Rules
1) Defensive Fire: A successful Defensive Fire attack ends a unit’s movement immediately in addition to inflicting a face-up Disruption Counter.
2) Transport: Units being transported may not use their SAs unless being transported by a vehicle that has the ‘Fighting Platform’ SA. This includes Spotters not being able to Spot for indirect fire.
3) Heroes: There is a maximum of one Hero unit per army list.
4) Off board units: Units that are off-board such as un-deployed Paratroops and Heroes do not convey any Leadership modifier.
5) Improved Indirect Fire: Only units that have not moved during the current Assault Phase may be used to trace LOS for Improved Indirect Fire. Aircraft may not spot for indirect fire.
6) Elite Soldiers: You may include no more than 6 Elite Soldiers per 100 points of build. Elite Soldiers are defined as any Soldier having a 5/5 Defense.
7) Force Composition: At least 30% of your force must be spent on 'Soldiers' and at least 30% must be spent on 'Vehicles'.

I will be living next to the Huntington Metro Station in D.C. come July. I'm 24 years old, and I'm looking for casual gamers myself.

Ask for Gary Fortentberry. He plays at the Game Parlor but he usually doesn't have his mini's with him. Mostly he's been playing Magic.

Gary was the former ASL champ right? I've seen him around up there from time to time, but yeah, most of the time he is playing Magic.
Do you play locally Colonel Coo?

Gary is the former champ. He is one of two people who have won against me. He doesn't carry his AAM with him because noone else plays.
I use to live in Fairfax but moved to Atlanta. Gary took my space in my old house (roommate). When I come to Va I always stop in the Game Parlor. I now carry two Magic decks with me and two AAM squads with me when I travel there.

Dang seems all the VA players for wizards mini games are up in Chantilly. I can get there after work during hte week, but it can be a bit of a pain due to traffic and all, I know its more of a pain to try and get south to the Woodbridge store though.. I'm 27 myself so defiently more interested in playing with mature gamers, and I've spent enough on this game to want to play it :D

Vandyfry:
Keep me posted on when you get into town. We have fairly active gaming group locally.
CdtWeasel:
Do you want to try and set up a day to play out at Chantilly?
Colonel Coo:
Its a shame you dont live around here anymore. How often do you get into this area? I used to play ASL as well, but sold my stuff off once when I moved. I just didnt play often enough to justify it.

Yeah sure, fri/sat nights are shakey for me as I'm usually hanging out with friends then, but any other time on the weekend is good, and during the work week I can be up there about 6:30ish

Do you want to try to set something up for next week? Wednesday might work for me, probably around 7:00 or so?

Yeah Wendsday looks like a possibility for me, though if my Contested Skies cases haven't shown up by then I might be waiting at my doorstep for the fed ex guy :p
Uncle_Joe
03-24-2006, 01:17 PM
Yeah, I'm not sure I'll have any of Set III by then either. No biggie either way though.
FWIW, do you play with single nationality etc? My group is going for that and I have enough minis now to actually support that. We do use exceptions that would be 'realistic' like Stuarts can be used by Ami, Sherman by Brits etc. But we dont mix Russian and WAllies or Japanese/Germans etc.
I'm open to playing with whatever rules though...just as long as everyone is on the same page.
CdtWeasel
03-24-2006, 08:26 PM
I'm fine with whatever. Like I said elsewhere I haven't played yet, just collected. I have enough to keep to a single nationality. I'm a laid back fun type of player rather than a rules lawyer so its all good with me. I picked up a couple set 3 boosters while waiting on my cases but waiting on my cases to add them into my collection, got my email today and they are supposed to show up on wed..oh the drama lol.

Ugh! I called over to Game Parlor last night (about 6:45pm) and asked Nora if A&AM was being played.... I missed it.
What about next week? I haven't played the game yet, but I have read the rules and bought a few booster (2 each set). Just last night I was able to run through a solo version, to get a better feel for mechanics of the game.
Is Wednesday the 'regular' night or do you have additional nights? Also can we get the combat kits (the things with map tiles, and some figures) from Game Parlor?
Thanks,
EasyPickens
Uncle_Joe
04-13-2006, 10:39 AM
Yeah, she told me that someone called like 2 minutes before we got there...
We should be there next week. I'd probably be up for playing on other days here and there if you want to try and arrange something.
Most of us playing up there are reasonably new to the game. I got into it in early March and one of the other guys has been collecting since the start, but only started playing a few weeks ago. There are a few others I know who play, but dont collect so they just use my stuff.

Count me in for next week. Since its a holiday weekend, I guess I can wait till Wednesday. :)
I built a couple of 100 pt armies to try various rules. They wont win any games but it gives me a chance to see how certain abilities really play out on the map.
Uncle_Joe
04-13-2006, 01:00 PM
Yes, normally Sundays are good for me to play until football season starts. But this Sunday is out due to Easter. I'm usually good for a weekday here and there if I know ahead of time.
If you want, we can just play from your collection so the playing field is level. I dont have any problems with that. I have a handful of 100 point armies written up for each major nation from my stuff.
When we play normally, we use single nationality armies, but I know that can be hard with a starting collection. So, you are equally free to use my minis if you want to try something.

Ohhh I got dibbs on playing you then. I'm the guy who has been collecting since the start, but only started playing with Uncle Joe a couple weeks ago. I have yet to win a game. Thats a shame about last week, I was sitting there working on army lists with the minis and rule book out, guess she didn't recognize the game. I can let you borrow out of my collection as well.
It looks as if I should be able to make it this wed.

I'm still planning on Wed night.
Today I went nuts and bought a few units off ebay. :) Mostly small stuff, but I did get a few tanks - should have them by next week.
At this point I have 4 'pure' armies ready: American, German, Russian, and Japanese. For the Russian & Japanese armies I had to use almost every unit I had.
The German and American might be semi-decent (fun if nothing else). I just really want to give this game a spin, it looks like alot of fun.
Thanks for the offer, the Russian army may need some type of tank. :) Oh, and I have no air units at all - figured I would learn the basic stuff first.
See you all Wed night.
Uncle_Joe
04-17-2006, 11:37 PM
Oh, and I have no air units at all - figured I would learn the basic stuff first.
I'm just as happy to play without air. It seems so hit and miss. Either its really good or it really sucks. I'll play either way though so if you want to use air, you can just borrow some of whatever you need till you get grab some.
CdtWeasel

No russkie tanks? Ya need to get yourself at least some T-70's. Those little buggers are tough and fast, and do decent damage, and are uncommon.

I don't know if this will help you but here in central virginia (Charlottesville) we are starting to play. We have a few players with several with over 100 models. One guy has enough to have four people play 100 pts and still have over half left over. We mostly play for fun, however we are starting to play for historical accuracy. Let me know if you intrested, we enjoy the times that we get to play this game, and welcome anyone in the area to play.
Uncle_Joe
04-18-2006, 03:37 PM
Anubis,
Thanks for the offer. I would bet it would be a pretty long drive to where y'all are, right. I'll look it up and see if its doable. Is there any form of official 'tournament scene' or anything down there?
Anubis
04-19-2006, 05:37 AM
Not really yet. Things are slower when the owner of the store doesn't play the game. However we do have some really competitive game play. If you are comming down, let me know in advance so I can make sure everyone who plays is there. Most of the time the wander in and out. We are looking to start some tournements, however most people who are just starting didn't get a booster case of set two and therefore have under 100pts. If you want to organize our tournemnt league, then your welcome to do so. However we generally like to do a story tournment. However like I said, if the game store owner doesn't play it, then it moves slower than if he does. However we should start to have tournemnts in the near future.

Hey,
Today when my wife went to Game Parlor Nora said that we left a plane (it's the P-51). The plane is fine, not damaged or anything, but no base/card. So CdtWeasel or Uncle_Joe are you missing the miniature for the P-51?
In anycase, I have the plane and will bring it next Wed (or whatever night we get together). If you need it sooner, I will also bring it to GP on Sunday (noon - 3pm).
Oh, and I had a blast playing -- Looking forward to trying other teams next week.
Will also PM both of you (just in case).
Uncle_Joe
04-23-2006, 12:32 AM
Hey,
I checked my stock when we played tonight and I have my Mustang so I'm going to wager it belongs to Joe. Thats probably what the guy at GP was trying to yell to us about as we were standing in the parking lot on Wednesday.
Thanks for having your wife pick it up though.

I believe there should be four of us tonight. Are you guys up for some 2v2 vs Dave and I? Perhaps 125 points, 18 unit limit and the standard maps?
We'll take either side although we have been playing mostly Germany against other folks.
If not, then we can just do 1v1s and switch off players.
See you tonight.

I live in Weyers Cave, which is on the I-81 corridor, dead center between Harrisonburg and Staunton. Have made contact with one other player, who is across the mtn in Charlottesville.
Do any of you know of anyone/anyplace along I-81 between, say, Winchester and Harrisonburg?

I am unfamillar with any place out that way as well. Do you buy from a FLGS? are you the only one? Sometimes just takes showing up a few times with minis to get people to play. Maybe look into nearby college/military towns to see if they have gaming shops.
RBloom0566
06-11-2006, 10:09 PM
Two FLGS' actually, but they one is a shop of Magic/Clix-heads and the other is, well, let's be polite and say they are too eccentric for me. *L*
This whole area is college-town. That, in fact, seems to be the root of the problem. JMU, EMU, BC, BRCC, MBC. Do you know how fadish and trendy college kids can be? Here today--gone tomorrow. Most of them don't even know there were wars before Desert Storm!
But I digress. Short answer: No luck.

I'm up for Wednesday this week. Going to try to build some new teams - prepare for the assult. :)
RBloom0566;
Colleges usually have 'gaming' groups/clubs. Check at their student centers, and such. Even though many will be going home for the summer, classes are still running, so you should be able to find somebody. If you don't see anything, talk to someone in the student center and see if there there someplace (either in their building or online) to post events/find players.
When I was down at Va Tech we had a game club ... you only need a couple of players to make it fun. Just be prepared to 'loan' a couple of units ore have extra teams built. Good luck.

Yea, that works for me. Going to try to build teams for 3-4 nations.... may only have enough units for 1 Axis (German) and 2 Allied (American and UK?).
My Russians, French, Italian, Japanize, etc still don't have enough units to make good teams. Going to wait a month and the 'If' possible pick-up some new stuff...
PS: I will use ALL my SS-Panzergrenadier - both of them. :)

Yes, none of my typical build would be impacted either, but its nice to get the rules set out 'for the record'. I also updated the rules to reflect the things we discussed last week (like no spotting from planes etc). I'll bring along the updated list so we have it for reference.

I'm up for the 18th. Just let me know if anyone else wants to meet.
That kind of sucks that no one else showed up for A&AM. I was actually thinking it was the regular A&A group meeting because I know that Rob plays that.
I might be interested in one of your new Crusaders. I have a shiny new Higgins boat to unload. :) Seriously, I might have something for trade...you interested in another Frog tank?

That really sucks about Woodbridge.
I wont be able to come on Sunday, heading over to my parents for Father's Day and wont be back till 8-9pm.
Close assault some tanks for me. :)

Re-confirming I'll be there on the 18th .
Uncle_Joe
06-16-2006, 02:30 PM
OK, so should we set a time? Does 3:30 work for everyone?
Also, Andras, are the House Rules I posted elsewhere good for you too? If you want me to repost 'em, I can but they are nothing earth-shattering...just routing out the worst of the rulings/cheesy combos.
As per usual, I can play however, but I prefer to know ahead of time before I write up some builds.
If time and opponents permit, perhaps we can do a 125-150 point team game as well.

Steve, Why don't you post them in your first post.

06-23-2006, 07:38 AM
Steve, I think #2 needs to be reconsidered
CCA and the 22d Infantry made spectacular gains during the attack. The combined arms team worked closely together. Artillery observers rode in the lead tanks and brought accurate, indirect fire down on the enemy. Infantry battalion commanders with manpack radios rode in command tanks to better coordinate tankers and riflemen.
from a longer post made on the main forum.
Uncle_Joe
06-23-2006, 08:52 AM
This is already taken into account because any US unit can spot for the battalion mortars. So US units will have more 'on call' firepower than other nation's units.
WotC's mechanics for transport currently suck and suck hard. Allowing a spotter an invulnerable spot on the battlefield is a Bad Idea IMO. It makes absolutely no sense that a spotter can ride on the back of a tank and call fire and be completely immune to return fire yet there isnt a single other location on the entire battlefield (like in house!) that he can do the same.
So, yes, I know that fire was often called from spotter tanks and whatnot, but in this case its more of a balance/combo preventing issue. Their transport rules simply encourage gamey 'combos'. IMO, that is not what the game should be about. YMMV.
CdtWeasel
06-23-2006, 02:11 PM
5 is the only one I find a bit dicey, because you need to keep track of who moved, or will move for calling in fire.
Uncle_Joe
06-23-2006, 03:22 PM
Yes, but in practice that hasnt been terribly cumbersome. Certainly playing the US mortars without some sort of rule change just changes the landscape of the game too much IMO.
If you wanted to eliminate the bookeeping (and further reduce the power of the mortars) just say that if the mortars are going fire, they have to be fired before any units move in the Assault Phase. That removes the need to remember this or that, but it gives them a disadvantage as well.
At any rate, I've played quite a few games with the 'no spotting after movement' rule and it was never a problem to remember it. If it becomes a problem, then perhaps we can consider alternatives.

Is anyone interested in trying to play a few games on Saturday, July 1 up at Game Parlor? I'm free in the afternoon into the evening.
Let me know if you want to try and get together and play.

Don't think I'll be able to make it this weekend. Got to do some shuttling of folk to airports, and I want to try to catch as much of the US Grand Prix qualifying and race as I can.
Uncle_Joe
06-30-2006, 11:02 AM
Ok, no problems. We'll just shoot for next Wednesday then.
After having played/observed a few more times, I think we should amend the House Rules and put the 70/30 limit on units. In other words no more than 70% of the build can be spent on either armor or infantry and at least 30% of the build must be spent on each.
Yes, Joe, that would invalidate the Vet Tiger + Brummbar, but it also catches all the silly things like I saw last night (2 Crocs + AVRE and the worst of the worst...4x AVRE). When builds like that are on the table, the game loses all sense of maneuver and it was just throwing dice to see if you can dent the rocks. It also invalidates any points spent on AI weaponry meaning and it starts to just become a guessing game in the builds.
We've already removed the one extreme of all Paras/all SS etc. So I think we have to go to the other end and remove the other extreme of all armor, especially all heavy armor. I believe the game is at its best with combined arms and the rules dont really encourage that with the extremely cost effective heavies on the field. Unless we want the game to degenerate down to the extremes, I think we have to put some limits on the builds.
On the reverse angle, do we want to experiment with aircraft more? I can still go either way if y'all would rather leave then on the sidelines.
CdtWeasel
06-30-2006, 12:50 PM
Ohh that sounds like a math heavy house rule  , we can implement it but like the rest of the house rules, I don't think it will affect any of our avg builds. I can see the croc heavy armies being an issue against infantry, but most other tank armies won't do too well against infantry swarm armies. I have no issue with aircraft one way or the other. They seem to fragile for me to want to use often, especially against german snipers, and I'm not really scared of them. Rick might have a problem rolling to hit them though :p
Uncle_Joe
06-30-2006, 02:08 PM
At least the math is all pre-game. And really it just means you have to spend at least 30 points on Infantry and 30 points on Vehicles.
I just dont want to be facing or planning extreme builds to get the drop on the opponent. I can also see 3 KVs being a problem and its something I'd rather head it off at the pass. Watching that 4 AVRE game was painful. He never even came close to losing against a nice balanced German force (which had a StuG, an EP4, a Pzrfst, a Sniper, and a pile of useless MGs, mortars, and Mausers).

I have a friend coming into town this weekend who plays A&AM. If so, we'll likely be at Game Parlor this Sunday anyways. At this point, plans are up in the air. I'll post here when I know for sure which Sunday would be good for me.
Thanks!

We are looking to get together at Game Parlor on Sunday the 23rd at around 2:00 or so. We'll probably be there until 6:00-6:30 if anyone wants to come by and play.
If you plan on coming, give a post here and we'll keep an eye out for ya and save a spot for you.

Hey guys, I'm not going to be able to make it today (Wed, 8/2). I have a few thing that have come up and I cant get out of them.
I believe CdtWeasel is out next week too (8/9) so I'll plan on being there again the following week (8/16).
CdtWeasel
08-02-2006, 12:32 PM

Hey guys,
Well, I think I've finally lost interest in the game. Its become the same old same old and unfortunately, we were never able to grow it beyond just the 2-3 of us.
The Gencon tournament reports and the general state of the game shows me that its living on borrowed time anyways. I might become interested again in October/November with the new set, but I'm not holding my breath on it.
So, the upshot is that I dont think I'll be showing up for A&AM on Wednesdays anymore (at least until the late Fall).
If any of you guys are interested in getting together for some other gaming some time, I'd be up for doing that.
Best of luck to those who still intend to carry the banner!

Oh man, and I was gonna win this time too. I'll bring my minis with me tomorrow. However if noone else posts on here that they will be showing up I'll skip as well. I'll definetly be up for other gaming as well.

What a bleeding shame, knowing what this game could've been.

OK, it looks like a few of us may start to get together and play again. So, I figured I'd resurrect this thread and see if anyone else would be interested.
The general plan seems like it would be to once again meet at the Game Parlor in Chantilly. Weeknights would probably work better for me, but I can fit some other times in as well (especially now that football season is winding down. :) ).
So, if you are interested in playing, give a shout out.

anyone playing this week? I just moved to Chantilly last month and I was THRILLED to find this post! Game Parlor is right across the street! Back in Va Beach I had NO ONE to play with my minis with! Oh man, this is gonna start hitting my wallet I can tell.....
By the way, any of you play Star Wars Minis Starship Battles? I bought a starter and played a couple test games with my friend but I don't want to buy any boosters unless there are people to play it with

Hi Mike,
It doesn't look like we are going to be gathering this week. We werent able to properly coordinate our schedules this week. Hopefully we'll resume next week. I could possibly make in up there on Sunday if anyone else is available.
FWIW, we do play with some current House Rules and we've experimented a little with new ones recently. I think most of us are willing to play standard rules too but its just not quite as fun.
As far as the SW Minis, one of our group (Cdt Weasel) has some of it, but I dont think he's ever really played much. I'm potentially looking into the War at Sea minis and will likely grab a starter and see how it plays.
MidnMike
03-15-2007, 06:49 AM
Awesome, I wasn't going to be able to make it this week anyway... I might be able to do Sunday, I'll post here later regarding that. War at Sea is what I'm most looking forward to myself, and I likely won't continue with SW minis because of it... Heck, depending on how good it is it could make me stop collecting regular AAM :)

Welcome aboard Mike. Good to have another player in the area. I'm pretty new to AAM and just start playing with the NOVA crew at the beginning of the year. They've helped teach me the ins and outs and I'm totally into this game now (like you, just ask my wallet). Like Uncle Joe was saying, our schedules didn't work out this week but we try to get together atleast once a week down at the Game Parlor. Next week's looking much better for me to get some gaming in so we'll try and get you coordinated with us as well. Like yourself, I'm also looking to get into WaS and will probably pick up a starter/booster(s) when I'm at the Game Parlor next week. Ok, again, glad to have you aboard and look forward to seein' ya.

Hey mike. I do have a good bit of Starship Battles, only played a bit with one friend. From what I've seen in the SSB forum it looks like there are a bunch of players down in fredericksburg that meet on Saturdays, some from all over NoVa as well. I'm probably gonna succumb to the temptation to buy some WaS as well.
I'm going to be working this Sun so can't make it up to GP this weekend.
MidnMike
03-16-2007, 06:22 PM
I have a strong feeling after reading the rules that WaS is going to be my game of choice... SSB was far too light on the tactics for me.
CdtWeasel
03-17-2007, 05:45 PM
Yeah, I'm just a sucker for star wars starships. I've now bought a starter and 5 boosters for WaS. I'm liking the look of the rules and look forward to playing soon.
As a side note I talked with the clerk at the Woodbridge GP a bit today. Seems that that store will be a better choice for gaming on the weekends. They have more tables, so gives a better chance of having space to play compared to chantilly. Its also pretty empty midweek, but I know that fighting traffic south sucks for you fairfax guys during rushhour.

For anyone interested, it looks like we'll be up at Game Parlor in Fairfax on Wednesday, 3/21 around 7:30. We'll possibly be trying out the new WaS, but hopefully we'll be able to get a game or so of A&AM in too.

We pretty much meet once a week at the Chantilly Game Parlor. Recently its been bouncing back and forth between Tuesday anda Wednesday evenings. We have done an occasional Sunday afternoon as well.
If your buddy is interested, tell him to drop by. We tend to play just A&AM/WaS on those nights but I do a lot of other gaming as well.

Ok, its been a while since we've met up at Game Parlor for A&AM. With the new 'greatest hits' set coming out is there anyone in the area interested in trying to get together and play in the near future?
I am interested in playing with the new maps and the Expanded Rules to give them a good acid test.
Anyone in NoVa still around and interested?

I'm still in GA, but you'll find the new maps are better due to the STARTING position being 3 hexes in and not 5 hexes in. the net effect is your pieces must start 3 hexes farther from each other than in a standard game. (+1 hex closer for map size, -2 hexes for each starting side).
also, they tend to run on the 60 degree slant, thereby preventing EASY OVERWATCH lanes.
Lots of fun.
