Can Transport units move, pick-up a unit, then continue moving? This would only happen during the movement phase.

Also, can the Bofors be transported on the Universal Carrier? Even if you place the Bofors on the Carrier, I can't see any way that they wouldn't end their first movement phase in the same hex.

Even if you place the Bofors on the Carrier, I can't see any way that they wouldn't end their first movement phase in the same hex.The rules allow units to begin the game mounted on transport. Because of the stacking rules, that's the only way the Bofors or 17-pounder can be transported -- if they begin the game mounted. Mounted units don't count against stacking limits (see glossary definition of transport), so as long as they stay mounted, there's no problem. The moment they dismount, however, they are in violation of the stacking limit, and your opponent gets to move the gun to any neighboring hex he chooses (again, see glossary definition of transport).

So the only way to actually benefit from the Bofors being transported by the Universal Carrier would be if you started the game with the Bofors on the Carrier, moved it, then during the movement phase of a subsequent turn have an Inspiring Lt. next to the Carrier so the Bofors can get off and your opponent chooses which one of the adjacent hexes it goes to? Is this the only way to do it? For that matter, do you need the Inspiring Lt. to get any Artillery off the Universal Carrier?

That's correct except for the part about the Inspiring Lt. -- he's not needed. Artillery units have Speed 0, which is not the same as "can't move." Speed 0 lets a unit move 0 hexes, which is what it does when it dismounts. When your opponent readjusts the unit's position to bring it into compliance with the stacking rules, that's not movement. The rules simply state that your opponent "chooses its location."

Sorry for bringing this up again, but if a transported unit dismounts in a hex adjacent to an enemy soldier, does that provoke defensive fire? I assume it would since dismounting is considered movement as you said above. In other words, does dismounting provoke defensive fire?

Only movement from one adjacent hex to another adjacent hex triggers defensive fire. Mounting or dismounting transport is movement, but it takes place in a single hex, so it doesn't trigger defensive fire.
