I came across a company that sells 3'x3' and 4'x6' felt mats printed with a 2" hex grid called Monday Knight Productions. They work extremely well with the terrain tiles from M44.

i bought the green and the tan. the germans held the line against the british assault saturday night on the plains of tunisia. :)
oh, and being a 18 hex by 18 hex map the germans were able to use extended range to great effect. :D

Sweet I am still thinking about getting one of those over the summer. For right now I am happy with the blank maps Bob gave us to print out. I print out 14 of them :D

Are there hex packs you buy for Mem. 44 or do you have to buy the whole game in order to get the hexes?

There is an additional terrain hex pack and you can get by with it, but I honestly like the board that came with the game, and I recommend you buy the box for that. The game itself looks quite good too.

Sort of off topic...but is Memoir '44 fun?
My birthday is on friday and im thinking about giving myself a present in the form of a new board game.
Keep in mind right now i'm mostly interested in light war gaming. I haven't moved to the more complex stuff yet, which is fine by me. AAM is great as far as i'm concerned.
Don't worry i'll use the money from relatives to get AAM Boosters :D

Memoir 44 is fun but very generic. The units are just Armor, Infantry, Guns. The Guns represent AT and Arty mixed given their effect. You can sometimes get 'Elite' units but equipment is not modeled at all (ie, armor is armor...doesnt matter if they are Shermans, Tigers, or Cromwells...they are still just armor).
The scale tends to be a little higher too with units seemingly representing Companies or Battalions (although as the mention in the rules, the scale varies by scenario). The battles in the base game start at D-Day and fight through most of the Normandy Campaign and a smattering of a few others.
Gameplay is quite simple. You have a hand of cards that determine what units you can activate and use that turn. Better commanders have more cards and thus, more options. The map is divided into Left Flank, Right Flank, and Center. The cards determine which area you can use troops in that turn. You play a card, execute the movement and attacks allowed by the card, and then draw a replacement card. There are some special cards to represent airstrikes or artillery barrages as well as replacements etc.
Combat resolution is again quite simple. You toss a number of dice based on range to target. The dice are printed with unit symbols and a retreat flag. If you match unit symbols with target type, you inflict casualties and remove models. If your roll retreat flags, the enemy must retreat for each one rolled (unless they are in prepared positions etc).
The game is maneuver based and having a larger force is not necessarily a guarantee of victory. One thing I think the game would benefit from would be a set turn limit for some of the scenarios.
Its not a cheap game though. If you are getting it solely for the terrain pieces, I'd recommend just buying the terrain expansion instead. But if you want to add another lite and quick WW2 game your collection its definately a worthy contender.

Thanks for the quicky review. I'm just looking for something quick and fun that my friends who aren't as much into gaming will play with me. I doubt i'll use the boards for AAM but perhaps if I get itchy to play an Operation Overlord Scenario before the new set comes out...

No problems. :)
One thing to keep in mind is that the true Overlord Scenarios require two sets of M'44 to be played.

Hotz Artworks also have some nice looking felt mats; the downside being that they only have 5" hexes available so far, although they say that 2" and 3" might be on the way.
The Monday Knight mats do look good. Are they printed so that there are quarter hexes in the corner of the mat so that mats can be tiled? I'm thinking about cutting up a 4'x6' into 1'x2' sections, mounting onto board and adding terrain to them to get a modular system. I don't really want to do that if I'm going to lose part of the mat by having to trim the edges though.
Anybody know if they look like they'll line up alright? I can't tell from the picture on their website.

This game sounds like a rip of a game I got several years ago. The game is Called BattleCry and uses a title of a game from the 60's. The new game is totally different from the original and was released shortly after Hosbro bought Avalon Hill. Its an American Civil War game with 3 unit types. Each unit rolls a number of dice based on distance with hits being the sillouete of the target. There were flags for retreat. Cards were what you decide what could be played where. I.E. play 2 units on left flank. play 1 unit from each flank. I swear Memoir 44 sound like the same exact game with different eye candy and setting. If Days of Wonder and Hasbro are totally unrelated it leads to some very interesting questions.

Richard Borg designed both Battle Cry and Memoir '44 so its not a rip off, but a variation on the same design. Command and Colors: Ancients also uses similar mechanics and I believe there was a Napoleonic game out there that is very close to Battle Cry as well.

Thats good to know. I figured it was something like that. But still it frustrates me when I buy a game and Its the same thing as something I already own just colored differently. Memoir 44 sounds like it would be the same identical game experience as BattleCry, (thats not nessecerely bad considering I very much enjoy BattleCry) however I could be wrong.
