Greetings all. I am brand new to the forum and to the game, although I have been playing wargames for some twenty years. My kids collect the Star Wars minis, and from frequenting the stores I've picked up the AAM Starter set and one Set 1 booster. I like what I've seen so far. I played WW II micro armour for many years along with Squad Leader, and I like the idea of a relatively easy way to get people into a WWII tactical game.
I spend most of my gaming dollars on my kids now, but I'm looking to expand my AAM force a little. Should I stick with the Set 1 boosters or go for the later ones? My gut says to fill out Set 1 first but I thought I'd ask you guys (I'd like to collect a UK force, but I like the randomness in a way). As a Canadian I'm tempted to wait for the D-Day set, but I'm heading back overeas next week for a few more months. I'm going to bring the minis over to try to get others to play, so I'm trying to build two forces.
Cheers,
TK

First off... welcome.
Stay with set 1 untill you get a good amount of what you want. Then after that look at set II for a bit. Then switch off between set 3 and 4.

Pleasure to have another Canadian on the boards! I would agree with Rommel Bomber, but if you want a Canadian force without taking a chance on Set IV boosters, perhaps you could snag some singles. There are some Canadian vendors on Ebay that could get you what you need right quick. Ten Canadian Infantrymen and two Eagle-Eyed NCOs would set you back the cost of a booster (if that) and you'd have everything you need right here.

Welcome to the boards!
Sound advice precedes me so I'll just point back to it agreeably. :)

Welcome, tk421, why are you not at your post? ;-)
This set is probably a singles set, if you want to buy a case, probably go with set 1.

Hourray Canadian aboard... Well, from all perspective, you are going to be disappointed with the DD tank and Infantry unit for Canada in SET IV.
So, like other said, work hard on SET I and then a little on SET II and then a little more on SET III.

Thanks to all for the advice and warm welcome! I'll stick with Set 1 for now and see what the fates give me. Good call on the EBay bit. My wife is a wizard at that stuff (she hunts down obscure Ninja Turtles etc for my kids).
As an ex-1st Hussar (90s vintage), I'm delighted to see a DD tank!
Cheers,
TK
p.s. As an aside, do we tend to see mostly single-nation armies?

We tendo to see a pure nation in the case of germany or japan and rusians. But it is more comon to see alied units combined for 100pts armies.

I see almost the British mixed with French for early was and with americans by 1942 and later.
But yes, playing single nation is almost possible with any nation, even france and china. Italy, Poland and Rumania are those who have a hard time playing alone.

Thanks again everyone. I'll mix up US and British for now and call them Canadian in my head. I took my boys to the local store today to buy some of their cards and I succumbed to temptation. I picked up a Set 1 booster and despite the best advice I could not resist getting one shiny new D-Day pack. With visions of DD Shermans dancing in my head found a Tetrarch and a little Italian tankette. A cool Typhoon did come in the pack, along with a Canadian infantryman, so I was not disappointed. The glider tank could be a neat trick. My wife knowing that I had done so before I got home was a neater trick...

Start with set I, get at least 4-9 boosters before moving up a set, get at least 9 boosters a set and work your way up from there, trade or buy any singles u need. Since each set comes with its own new set of units you got to go in order to be able to understand it all.
By the way, welcome to the boards and game.

Well, my first army has coalesced. Its US, and it seems to have the Sherman Swarm problem but I'm keen to have a go with it:
2 x Sherman
1 x M18
2 x Garand
2 x Bazooka
2 x Flamethrower
1 x Red Devil Captain
1 x Canadian Infantryman (he's on a small unit exchange for now)
I'd like to swap out the M18 for some more infantry. Some machineguns and mortars would go nicely as well. I have one M3, and with another I'd be tempted to try a pair of them in the place of the thee tanks I have now for some flavour. You can't always get what you want!

Welcome!
You want to play UK, then Set I is agood start, you might want to leave out set II (4 units, a crappy piat, Archer nice but you can take others, try to get the Valentine and the Cromwell from the net), Set II has only 5 Brits, but the Universal carrier and the Bofors are top notch units, The Gurkha will do fine and the17- pounder is a decent tank killer. - the COmet could be traded in, but i think it is not the best of all tanks.
So the second set for an UK players is set IV with 9 units (2-planes among them ) and 3 Canadian units.

Tk, the canadian unit "Eagle Eyed NCO" is actually really good, esp with Garand units. It's a nice way to put together a cheap army. THere are actually lots of good, cheap armies, using things like Elite Panzer4s, Garands, Shermans, Stuarts
8 dice at 6 range is massive. He is good with AT guns too.
Here's a couple links (guys who advertise on dt, i always support them). You can see the stats and picture there.

Thanks for input/feedback guys. I have several Set 1 boosters. My Germans are pretty balanced. I have lots of British support stuff (Vickers, 6 pdrs, sappers) but no riflemen. My US army is the most "complete."
I had a game last night to learn the mechanics. The Shermans are actually nice tanks here. I'd want more Garands and maybe less Bazookas.
Ideally, I want Canadian riflemen, DD tanks the NCO but with some of the British support stuff (Vickers, Sappers and maybe a Firefly instead of DDs). I'll just call the Brits Canadians in my head. I'm heading back overseas for a couple of months so I won't be purchasing for a while.
Cheers,
TK
p.s. I got a T34 in one of the packs. I've been drooling over it. I only have one rifleman to go with it. Hmm. Focus! At least with this game I don't have hoards of unpainted minis from my impulse buys. My eldest son likes the figs too!

I made the mistake of not getting much of set one. I am seriously lacking in basic troops, which means the armies that my father and I build are made up of SSPGs and Vet SMLEs. Stick with set one, then if your looking for good brits, set 4 is the next step, followed by set 3.

TK421,
Welcome to the AAM Forum! As a fellow Canadian, Set IV was a much needed shot in the arm. I have almost all of Set IV now (missing a few planes...). Let us know where you are (city). Maybe we can hook up... There's 4 or 5 guys that meet in Toronto. Let me know if you are interested!
Also, if you're look for "close combat" scenarios and maps, please PM me!
