View Full Version : Go Brewers!

Well, my Brewers snapped their 8-game losing streak on Monday, and Dave Bush just had an awesome game against the Padres yesterday (pitched the whole game, gave up three hits and a run, hit an RBI double that was almost a home run, scored), so I'm feeling pretty good right now.
Ben Sheets looks like he's coming off the DL fairly soon, too; hopefully in time for the series against the Twins, for whom everyone else around here in the frigid north cheers.

And yet you enjoy basketball? And soccer? Strange.
Well, we didn't sweep the Reds, but we went 2-1. Everyone on the DL (Ben Sheets, Tomo Okha, JJ Hardy, et al.) is progressing nicely, so maybe we will have a larger active list than disabled one in the near future.
Series against Cleveland begins Friday, so I'm at odds until then.

It looks like my Braves are going to lose some of their fair-weather fans this year. I knew the day would come, but we've had a good run. I've been a Braves fan since the 70's, so there is really no hope for me. :D

Capuano struck out 12 (!) Indians to get the win last night. Hopefully Bush will have a good day on the mound again tonight.
Write in Bill Hall for the All-star game!

We just swept the Indians with a walk-off home run by El Caballo, who just keeps looking better for the All-Star game. Hopefully we will see Capuano and maybe even Bill Hall there as well.
I am now resigned to not taking our division; everyone just keeps feeding the Cardinals. We're only 2.5 back from the wild card, though, and now that we're at .500 again, I think we can take it.
Tough series coming up, though. We hope to do my hometown team a favor by bumping off the Tigers, but they're not the best team in their league for nothing. . . .

I would say the sports worth watching (as sports) are baseball, football, and hockey.
Basketball can be amusing, but it gets tedious after a while. The thing that bugs me about it is that the games are so high scoring that only the last few minutes of play actually matter. They might as well just play for 4 minutes.
Soccer is just an inferior game. Soccer and Hockey are basically the same game, only hockey is better in every way.
Tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, marathons, golf, whatever. Who cares? That many of their fans are only into it as a socially acceptable way to ogle attractive women speaks volumes about their quality qua sports.
Brewers went down to the Tigers last night. I hope we can win the next two, but my hopes aren't high. I'll settle for one win. Either Helling today, fresh off the DL, or Capuano tomorrow will get it for us.
By the way, write in Ball Hall for shortstop; he plays everywhere, but most spectacularily at ss and 3b, and I don't want him taking Corey Koskie's spot.

Oh, yeah, baseball is definitely boring if you don't understand the game and don't care for the teams. I'm with you there. Football is the exact same way: if you get it, waiting a minute or so for a 5 second play builds excitement and suspense, if you don't get it and/or care, it is just tedious.
In the mid 90's they had Magic tournaments on ESPN 2 during the slow months of the summer. I taped 2 of them.
I would pay to see that. Not much, but that is awesome.
Well, we went 1-2 against the Tigers, but fortunately the Mets didn't do much better. We are now 3 back from the wild card; if we can not explode until Sheets and Tomo Okha return, I think we have a really good shot at it.
Deciding game of the series against Kansas City as we speak. After that the Cubs (certainly a winnable series) and then my hometown Twins. I'm getting pumped for that one already. The hope is to beard Johan Santana in his den, but I don't know if that's going to happen. The Twinkies haven't lost a homegame with Johan starting all season.
boylermaker
06-27-2006, 01:44 PM
Well, we lost the series to Kansas City. But we won the opener against the Cubs 6-0.
Man, I was scared! Capuano got hit in the wrist by a liner in the bottom of the ninth. It sounds like he'll be okay, ready to start against the Twins, but for a moment there I saw our postseason dreams go up in flames; he would have been the third of our 5 original starting pitchers to be on the DL.
Braves just beat the Yankees to even the series.
There is a lot of baseball left to play this year.
I never give up hope. That's for quitters. :D
Of course, if we don't get it together there's UGA football.

Cubs just snapped their 9-game home losing streak. Kolb gave up 5 runs in the 8th. So now the series is 2-1, Brewers, final game tomorrow.
This loss shows exactly why we'll be so much better when Okha and Sheets return. It's not that they'll be amazing; they probably won't be back to amazing caliber until next season. But they will have quality starts and send Jackson and Villenueva, who are currently starting, back to middle relief, where they belong. Then we won't have so many of these fifth and eigth inning implosions.

boylermaker
06-30-2006, 09:08 AM
Prior had some really nice moments, though. He almost struck out three-in-a-row with the bases loaded in the 6th, I think.
Davis was having "back spasms" and couldn't pitch, so we had to send out Gonzales, another middle reliever turned starting. Things got kind of hairy for a while, but the Cubs haven't won a game on Thursday all season long, so we did pull out a win, 5-4.
Tough series against the Twins starts tonight. I'll be there. We can win one for sure, I think, but winning the series will be hard. We miss Santana in the rotation, at least.

Brewers went down hard to the Twins, who swept us. I don't want to think about that anymore, besides saying that Joe Mauer had a worse-than-usual series, which made me happy, because he is incredibly overrated (at least here in Twins Territory).
But Lee and Turnbow made the All-Star game, while Capuano is in the running for that last spot.
And we beat the Wild-card-holding Reds today.
So I'm starting to feel better.

In local news, the Twins lost their first series in a long time. . .to the Royals! I rejoice especcially because now I can make all my friends eat the nasty things they said about the Brewers when we lost to the Royals earlier. Of course, arguing with a Twins fan is insanely difficult. It usually goes something like this:
TWINS FAN: Joe Mauer is the greatest offensive player in baseball history!
BOYLERMAKER: Actually, that's not true. Joe Mauer isn't even the best offensive player this season. While he has a higher batting average, Ichiro Suzuki is clearly the better player: Ichiro gets extra-base hits and steals; Mauer does neither. The result is that Ichiro gets home three times for every two of Mauer's runs. . . .
At this point, the Twins Fan stops listening and gets a simultaneously pitying and triumphant look on his face. He is about to deploy the Joe Nathan of baseball-argument-closers, the coup-de-main against which other teams' fans are helpless. Hitler probably looked at Poland with a similar expression in August of 1939.
TWINS FAN: Look, even if what you say is true, that doesn't change the fact the Twins won the 1991 World series.
BOYLERMAKER: So what? 1991 was 15 years ago. Hitting four singles every ten at-bats is great, but you are more help to your team. . . .
The Twins Fan is now puzzled. He used the closer, but this strange creature in front of him is not aware that it has been defeated. Strange. . . Ah, he has it! He forgot an essential part of the argument. His brow clears; all he need to do is to remind me:
TWINS FAN: You are forgetting that the Twins also won the 1987 World series.
BOYLERMAKER: 1987 was also 19 years ago. Anyway, if you look at Mauer's slugging instead of at his batting average. . . .
Now the Twins Fan is embarrassed. Apparently the fact that the Twins won the 1987 and 1991 World series, a fact that would end an arguement with any reasonable person, has made no impression on me. He is embarrassed that other Twins Fans might overhear this discussion, to his shame. He gives me a look that one might give to a middle-schooler who is loudly discussing pornography in a public place. He quickly moves to change the subject. The Twins Fan's subject-changer of choice is a comparison between the American and National leagues.
TWINS FAN: Wow, the National League sucks this year!
BOYLERMAKER: I admit that the American league has an overall winning record against the National league. But that doesn't change the fact that the National League is 25 years older and broke the color barrier without having the Black Sox or designated hitters. Also, since you seen to think that we can draw conclusions from the small number of interleague games, I would like to point out that the Brewers are doing better against your American League friends than the Twins are themselves. . . .
TWINS FAN: Ok, whatever. But what about the 1987 and 1991 World series?
At this point I tear my hair out and walk away, sobbing quietly.
1991 World Series eh...
You should have pointed out they beat the Braves who went from worst to first that year. Our team wasn't ready to win the series til '95. Or '94 if they had played it. We just beat the Cubs in a knuckle-biter of sorts. We had them 8-1 in the 4th, but by the time the ninth came around it was 8-6. The first batter was walked, and then Clark and Gross collided in the outfield to let the Cubs get two on base with no outs. But then they popped one up, and after that we turned a beautiful double play to win. I was sweatin'!
On to ATL. It sounds like Sheets will start there as scheduled.
Smoltz has been with the Braves since '88. He's the only solid pitcher we have this year. I wish we still had Glavine and Maddux.

Cubs won, 8-6 in the 18th inning. Now the Rockies and D-Backs are tied up in the 16th inning!
Time to go to bed...

Well, we've been floating around .500 recently: lost the series to the braves, won the series with the pirates, pushed the series with the Astros. I woundn't take all that much of a hot streak to secure the wild card, but as September approaches closer and closer, my hope begin to fade.
But next year, we'll be sweet! All our DL guys should be back by then.

You're right. The NL Wild Card race this year is insane. As of today, there are four teams that are 5 or less games behind Cincy and four more that are within 7 games. The crazy/sad thing is that Cincy has a record that's barely over .500 (.520 today, after losing to Houston).

Yeah, the NLC is definitely a case of how-the-mighty-have-fallen. Remember the beginning of the season, when the central was the cream of baseball? The brewers were 3-4 over .500 and were 5th in the division.
Sheets and Cappy pitched a couple of nice ones, and we're looking to sweep the Rockies with Okha this afternoon.

Okha was just as good as he had be; we swept 'em with a 12-6 win!

Argh!! I take my eyes off 'em for three days and they lose three in a row to the Marlins! At least the Reds have been losing too.

It ain't to late! We just gotta hit every pitch, make every out, challenge every call, get Ned Yost ejected every game, win every time! Undefeated September, here we come!!

Alright, we took a day off before putting the boylermaker-plan-to-victory into effect. But tonight, look out, Marlins!

Sorry dude, but the Brewers are 1-9 in their last ten games... just like the Cubs!

Eight games from now we'll be 9-1. You'll see!
Or maybe not. But we won one! So I'm happy.

Won the Dodgers series, but then lost to the Astros. But Dave Bush pitched a complete game shutout for a 4-0 win.

Won the series against the Cardinals. Up two games on the Giants right now, but we're down two in the seventh. But we've got two on and and no outs, so Kevin Mench can hit a homer and prove his worth.

Mike Rivera just stole home to tie the game. Oh YEAH!

Is baseball season over yet?
boylermaker
09-24-2006, 03:50 PM
Nope. We won today's game to sweep the Giants. We have a day off, then three games against the Cubs and two against the Cardinals. Then the countdown to the beginning of the baseball season starts.

Not if your team isn't the Brewers!
If you were a Mets or Yankees fan, the season might last a little longer.
Just kidding. Remember, I'm a Cubs fan. This has been a HARSH year. :o

It wouldn't have been so harsh if Dusty Baker hadn't ruined Mark Prior . . . or thought that walked men "clogged up the baselines" . . . or ruined (insert other Cubs pitcher) . . . or if the Brewers weren't so much better than you . . . :D I don't forget that you're my baseball archrival. . . .

I just saw my first baseball game today. There is one player that kicked ass. His name is Babe Ruth. Is he any good?

Nah, Cubs fans don't see it that way. We see you guys as lower on the food chain than we are. (Granted, the Brewers were way better than the Cubs this year.) We see our archrivals as being the Cards.
It's kind of the same way in college basketball. NC State always claims to be our (UNC's) rivals, when we really couldn't care less about NC State. Our rival is Duke... and Duke reciprocates that hatred!
boylermaker
09-27-2006, 10:33 AM
Then we have an advantage: we hate you, you don't notice us, it's much easier to destroy you, as we will today. My man Dave Bush is pitching tonight, so watch out.

He's a washed up pitcher. Better trade him to the yankees for whatever you can get...

Well, it's time to put this thread to rest. We split the season-ending series with the Cardinals, winning the last game. That made me happy.
On a related note (things that make me happy), the Twins just let the A's hit an in-the-park homer. I haven't been so schadenfreude-ically happy since Johan Santana walked a guy at the All-Star game.
Well, 180 days until baseball season begins again!
