Anyone have any good 100 or 150 pt Soviet builds they'd like to share? I've been trying to play pure Soviets but I find myself having a hard time.

I just can't seem to get a good build. I find myself playing the same tired old build with T-34s, KV-1s, and my IL-10.

What sort of infantry do you reccomend using?

Any suggestions from other SU players would be welcome.

I really like using the PPsh-41's in my builds, they really let loose at close range. Try building an army form 1941 with the Soviets, it's a lot of fun!! Use the spotter and mortar to great effect. Add in a Katyusha and thier infantry don't stand a chance!!

It is tough to build a strong Russian army - no defense 5 infantry and no AA guns really hurts. You could fudge a little and go with a Bofors and another piece or two as "Lend Lease".

As to Set IV, the Russians only got two pieces. The SU-76 is not a bad piece, but point for point it just does not hit as hard as the Elite Panzer IV and is even more vulnerable.

In order to be competitive you are stuck playing the usual suspects: KV-1, T-34/85 and SU-85. But the Russian Hero is as good as any, and Hand-to-Hand gives him an advantage over other Heroes. Put a Cossack or Spotter on a KV-1 and a PPSh or Grenadier on a T-34/76, move up and start spawning Heroes of the Soviet Union...

Yeah, "Zombies" of the Soviet Union works nice ;)

I've come to conclusion that I probably do need to use a few "lend lease" units, mainly just the Bofors as I've got zero AA capability.

I've been putting a spotter and a cossack Captain on my tanks which works well. Sure does make the mortar deadly, and I have been saved from being close assaulted thanks to the cossack captain.

Thanks for the tips so far everyone, keep them coming!

Nearest thing the soviets have to an AA unit is a couple of Fanatical Snipers+Commisar.
They can't even use HMG for AA, because they havn' t got a mini for one. When do we get a mini of the "cute" russian HMG on a wheeled mounting ?
Set-IV really short changed the russians (only 2 units). I hope that means we are getting a good selection of soviet units in set-V.

Here is a Russian Army we used at last week's playtesting that was fairly effective:

32 KV-1
09 Cossack Captain
33 Guards T-34
16 Soviet Hero x2
09 Bofors
01 Tank Trap
100 pts

I pretty much came away with the belief that heroes are stupid. Dropping a hero in the KV-1 hex (which was adjacent to some SS PG's) and then having the hero walk into their hex, get disrupted (but ignore it like the Terminator) and then brutalize the SS PG's in HTH was a little over the top. A hero is a single guy and he took out two elite squads?

A Guards and a KV-1 *can* take out a German MBT if you're a) lucky, b) outplay the opponent and force them to come to the objective. The T-34 has the speed to get to a flank, which is about the only shot you have. We tried this version (instead of a third tank or TD) just to see how "good" the heroes really were...

If you want AA support in a pure Soviet army you have to take all KV's as tank for the 9/9/7 shooting...

KV-1 x2 (64)
Spotter - in KV-1 (8)
Cossack Captain - in KV-1 (9)
Mortar x 2 (22)
Grenadiers x 4 (16)
Hero x2 (16)
IL-10 (21)
Partisan x 3 (9)

KV's are one of the best tanks in the game,Cossack makes the KV more immune to close assaults, partisans can be supported by a hero

its not perfect but has done well for me in the past..

If your defending a good makeshift AA is the PPsh-42 men. They are only good at short range but you could use them to guard Mortars or snipers.

Also, crash_beedo, there was an american soldier in normandy who took out 1-2 mg nests and I think 4-7 other german soldiers alone and saved a man from his squad....well saved his entire squad by taking out the mg's.

Yeah, I don't know much about its game statistics, but the Katsyusha was put to great use repelling Operation Barbarossa, so you should pick up a few of those.

Use the Guards T34. They can take on Tigers and probaby anything else the Axis send your way.
