Just played for the first time and I have the inevitable questions. If a plane flies to attack Japan from Manchuria does the Sea in between count as one territory? so it would cost 2 to get there?
A general point, subs seem to be very vunerable to air attack, which reduces their effectiveness in the game, any ideas or tactics.

 "If a plane flies to attack Japan from Manchuria does the Sea in between count as one territory? so it would cost 2 to get there?"
smile.gif Yes the sea between Manchuria and Japan counts as one territory, so in this case you will have to fly 2 spaces in your attack movement and then fly other 2 spaces in your non-combat movement for a total of 4 spaces movement as the maximum range allowed to fighters.
:D The subs are 0% effective when attacking over fighters or bombers so in order to defend your subs you should always cover them with battle ships or carriers with two fighters on board so you can protect them from possible attacks.
smile.gif Also remember that if any enemy unit attacks one of your subs and misses, you can defend by rolling dice or you can choose to withdraw from the attacking zone by moving your sub unit to one allied or unocuppied adjacent space.

It takes a movement point to enter the Sea of Japan.

If you like Risk or Axis&Alllies why not try Attack! by Eagle Games?
