I am posting this for a friend who has registered for this forum, but does not yet have posting privileges. How long does that take?

We were playing the Pegasus Bridge scenario. The scenario grants a couple of german units the Bridge Demolition SA. One of these units got on the bridge in his movement phase. A british Bren Machine Gunner fired at him. Would the Covering Fire SA prevent the Bridge Demolition SA from being used in the german's assault phase?

We have gone back and forth on this. The "Important Clarification" about the definition of "an attack" seems like it might cover this, but the Bridge Demolition SA doesn't use the phrase "instead of attacking". The wording of Bridge Demolition SA the Royal Engineer's card is: "This unit may attempt to destroy a bridge in its hex instead of moving or attacking in your assault phase. Roll a die. If you roll 4 or higher, destroy the bridge." The Covering Fire SA would prevent an attack, but a unit can still move.

Therefore, because it could still move, can it still do a bridge demolition instead? I think this is probably stretching things a bit, but the rules interpretations have generally been very literal, so I am not sure what the answer will be. The new Demolition SA does not use the word "attack" at all, so I am not sure what to make of that with regards to the Bridge Demolition SA. It does make me lean towards Covering Fire SA does not prevent Bridge Demolition SA.

Your supposition is correct. Covering Fire does not prevent the use of special abilities, and both Bridge Demolition and Demolitions are special abilities that don't involve attacking.
