I will be hosting my first ever A&A minis event in Toledo Thursday July 20th. I have never run a minis event. Here is what I was thinking considering the time alloted for the event. The store owner is donating some boosters for prizes.

ANY SUGGESTIONS OR THINGS I MIGHT HAVE OVERLOOKED TO MAKE THIS A SUCCESS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Time: 4.5 hours ( give or take a few minutes)
Ages: from Jr. high and up
Cost $5

Here's my thought

1. 100 pt. army (get several games in)
2. 15 unit max
3. Axis or allied army. Some of my Jr, high age don't have enough pieces for
nation specific army. Axis can mix, Allied could mix.
4. Play 3 games in the time -Jr. High could play jr. high, experienced against
each other, newbies vs. newbies etc.
5. Best record 3-0 wins. Tie breaker for everyone who is 3-0. Keep track of
points killed in each game. The most points killed, wins.
6. Depending on attendnace- Prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd???????

Anything I missed????

Here is one suggestion, I have played it twice and everyone involved seem to enjoy it. It keeps out power gamers and creates a fun and competitive environment.

Each player brings up to 30 points each of Axis army and an Allied army. 2 boosters are given, adding in the 30 points they brought, from which a player makes up an 80 point army of either side.

First and foremost, if you expect more than eight players, get at least one more person to help you judge. Especially if you're going to draw a fair number of inexperienced players, each game will place a high demand on judges' time. If you're all by yourself, trying to answer numerous rules questions, sort out pairings, and generally keep everything running without help, you may be overwhelmed. Worse, the event will suffer, and those who attend won't have as good a time as they might.

Second, consider using Swiss pairings. In this system, players are matched randomly in the first round. In the second and subsequent rounds, players are matched against others who have the same win/loss record. That way, you almost always wind up with a clear winner. You could divide the field into two, with all the jr. high players in one group and older players in the other if you're concerned about younger players being gnerally outclassed by older ones, but don't underestimate the ability of young players. They may surprise you.

Third, the idea of mixing sealed boosters with 30 points of brought units is interesting. You'd need to charge a lot more than $5 per player, however, unless someone is willing to donate all those boosters for free or reimburse the store for whatever gets opened. Six players would need a case of boosters, which is a fair chunk of change.

Thanks,

I like the Swiss idea. That is what I'll do.

I have an employee of the store playing and to help with the judging/questions. So I'm not alone.

I am trying to avoid the purchasing of aditional boosters. I have some donated by the store, and with the small entry fee i hope we can buy others and give prizes away to more than just one winner or two.

Great help! KEEP Em Comming!!!
