The first and best choice is what is commonly called "Revised"; the basic game of Axis & Allies. You'll get the most out of that game. D-Day, Pacific, and Europe are all fine variants. Revised is the most, widely played.

Just adding a "quick" post to this, (My Opinion) is that the AH D-Day is a good "starter" and probably the "easiest" to learn. I like it, as it introduces the "new" player to the A&A games. The others, have more rules and parts per turn... imho. ;)
