Hey all, I havent posted on this site in over a year, time flies....
Anyways, whenever i play as germany, which is most of the time, I always find myself spread thin all over Europe.
Usually, on my First turn, I deploy either the tank or 2 inf from southern Europe into Africa, and have to take back either ukraine or go for Karellia. Going for Karellia leaves Finland Norway open, while attacking Ukraine makes me have to empty Germany in Eastern Europe in order to protect the terrirtory. hopefully, by this time, i have decimated the British fleet and lost a minimal amount of fighters, at most 2.
On the next turn, USA usually makes a small invasion of Africa and I am forced out. All the while, Russia is purchasing blocks of infantry and a tank and mowing my troops down. In the end, I become spread, with infantry in Germany, nothing in Southern Europe, nothing in Africe, a small force in Karelli and a small force in estern Europe to be taken the next turn bythe double Engalnd USA D-Day invasions.
How do I avoid the decimation of Fortress Europe?

Purchase lots and lots of infantry. One of two things of consequence to Germany happens on turn one: A) Russia attacks or B) Russia doesn't attack. If Russia attacks, take back your territory (the one immediately to the east of Germany). If Russia doesn't attack, move up your hordes of infantry to defend your line. You can outproduce Russia, and Britain and the US won't be a factor in Europe for at least another few turns. The trick to the early war is this: avoid attacking Russia for as long as possible. Don't spread out your forces. Build transports and infantry and tanks and take Africa for the free IPCs.

siestraphone, the best way to keep Germanys army strong in the first few turns is to retreat out of ukraine and consolidate your army in Eastern Europe, you should have enough there to thwart any Russian attacks. In the mean time play The cat and mouse game with Ukraine trading it back and forth with Russia. I recommend that you buy all infantry for the first three turns and then a couple stacks of tanks. Then you can move back into Ukraine and trade the Caucuses back and forth. Build your armys! The key is don't move them into harms way where the can fesibly be whitteled down by the Russians, keep them strong and keep your tanks out of harms way. After you have your Armor built up you should concentrate on infantry and a airforce or more tanks. The trick is to hold off Britain and the U.S, to do this you cannot move your Armys into Ukraine in the first two or three turns or you will be over expanded. Keep France strong and once you have your tank stack the allies will have to think twice about unloading into france.
hope this helps.

You have all replied assuming that the Russian player that I am up against is a defensive player. Let me give you a breakdown of what happens when I play:
Russia: All Forces from Caucasus (5 Inf) and All from Karellia (4 inf, 2 tanks, 1 Fighter) and 1 fighter from Moscow take Ukraine, Usually, I am destroyed, and he is left with 2 tanks and 5 infantry with 2 fighters in Karellia. He then puts 8 inf in Karelia and moves Moscow Peaces to Karelia as well. That leaves a powerful Karelia force that even if I beat, I will lose next round and thus the whole of my Armored forces and fighters, or a slightly weaker Ukraine force if I take it which will still be destroyed the following turn if I take it, thats my dillema...
If I have to split my cash on a Western Front with USA and UK while playing tennis with Russia for Ukraine and Karelia, I will eventually lose. Thats around 30 IPC germany against 30 (UK) 24 Russia and (20) USA, thats 30:74 IPC's....

* In the case of Russia not being restricted and they attack the ukraine then retreat to germany if you don't have a good attack. Buy another transport to send troops to Africa and get the ipcs lost in ukraine and finland. Build your Army in germany, You sould have enough in a turn or two to push Russia's forces back and contend with the Uk. The US ussually isn't effective till turn three. However if you are a average player playing with Russian restricted is a wise move. Russian restricted is the best way to keep Germany from being taken out in the first three turns. If you are playing where Russia attacks the first turn then bring your units into germany and rebuild for an offensive. Also don't attack Karelia untill you have enough to hold it. A strafe attack that is strong is the only other reason I would advise attacking karelia in the first turn or two. Otherwise build your self up, Russia can't fight you alone. The allies are ussually rebuilding their navys the first couple of turns, so you have some time to replace what Russia has taken and more! Try this meathod along with what I suggested in my other post and if this doesn't work try Russian restrict. The game is already balanced in the allies favor so taking this away may give you a shot.
