Well, that answered my question. Now there are 4 threads. It`s a shame really, this is the greatest game i`ve ever played and nobody cares about it. I guess it`s just how it is today, online and console games have placed board games on the endangered species list. Nothing beats sitting around with your friends and pounding out an A&A game, you cant get that online.
Maybe i`m doing something wrong, if so please direct me.

There are actually 2602 threads in this forum, but for some reason you can't see them. Please take a look at the Disply Options box at the bottom of the forum page. It might be set to display posts from the last day only.

Welcome, Hitler0355!
As Sihr_Togg has stated, there is a great amount of past discussion to mine through here, and there is also potential for future discussion. The boards are a little quiet these days, but that can change.
One thing to keep in mind: you'll actually see 4 "major" versions of the main A&A game discussed here. These are the original Milton Bradley version, the 2004 Axis & Allies Revised version from Avalon Hill, and 2 variations on the AH version: Larry Harris Tournament Rules (LHTR - put together by Larry Harris and representatives of the on-line clubs and used in many on-line and face-to-face tournaments) and A&A Enhanced (put together by a committee of members of this forum). This may be a little confusing at first, but you get used to it.
Enjoy the forum!

Original Axis & Allies (Milton Bradley) is more commonly known as '2nd edition' or AA (abrev), while Axis & Allies Revised (2004) is also referred to as AAR (abrev) or '4th edition'.
What Krieghund means with 'A&A Enhanced' is in fact an enhancement of AAR, and so its name is 'Axis and Allies Revised Enhanced' or AARe (abrev) or simply 'Enhanced'. Discussion about this variant is always in the 'Axis and Allies House Rules' forum, so you won't find it in this forum (AA General).

Yes, people often do refer to AAR as "4th edition", but I consider that to be a misnomer. Unlike the 2nd and 3rd editions, which were simply rules additions and changes, Revised is really an entirely different game (new map, new pieces, major rules changes, etc. - not to mention new company), thus the name change to Revised. I prefer to refer to the various incarnations of A&A as follows:
Nova version
Milton Bradley version, editions 1 through 3
Avalon Hill version (Revised)
What Krieghund means with 'A&A Enhanced' is in fact an enhancement of AAR, and so its name is 'Axis and Allies Revised Enhanced' or AARe (abrev) or simply 'Enhanced'. Discussion about this variant is always in the 'Axis and Allies House Rules' forum, so you won't find it in this forum (AA General).
This is true now, but I'm not entirely sure that all past discussion of Enhanced was moved to the House Rules forum by the Moderators when it was created. Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken here.

I like you version/edition system. I'll adopt it if you don't mind. I prefer AAR over 4th ed, but at AAMC 4th ed is more popular. Always good to by bilangual.

Ah forgot about that. If you search in topics from like 2 years ago, you'll find the roots of Enhanced (v1.0 and v1.1 I believe) in AA General.

Thanks. I don't mind at all - I'd prefer it if everyone adopted it.

go to personal settings, by clicking on privat messages in top right of web page.
then click on edit options on bar on left side.
under thread display options, use the drop down menu and select which time frame. the longer the time frame the more threads you will see.
there was a high activity level here a while ago when the game was released. lots of strategy talk, but after a while there is not much to say as it has all been said before. were it gets intresting is when there are several new players(or at least several new people to the boards).
so they can discuss strategy for the first time together. it is fun watching people coming up with "new" strategies, but dissappointing to only find out that it has been talked about years earlier.

oh and if you are looking for a place to play online check out triplea.
it is a free tool that allows you to play online in realtime. to find opponents go to http://www.triplea.stackedqueens.com/chat/chat.php
or you can play by email. you make your moves. dice are rolled on a server which is sent to both players as a verification. then you email your opponent with an attachment of the map. to find opponents for pbem go to http://tripleawarclub.org/ladder/

For PBEM, I recommend the 'Flames of Europe' Club: http://www.flames-of-europe.de/
The dice roller contains many modules (like AA and AAR and lots of variants) and the dice rolls are saved to the online game log that both players have access to. Maps are uploaded. It gives a nice overview of the game in stead of a bunch of emails.

That online play looks great. But when i try to download the tripla, i have to choose a "mirror' whatever that is, and it`s not free. Is there a way around that?
pagan

triple-a is a free program, and it is free to download.
mirror downloads... its basically telling you that you can download the program through various different areas. Pick the one closest to your location for the quickest download

I dont want to seem ignorant, but when it comes to computers i am and theres no use trying to hide it. I`m 37 and this is my first computer and i`ve got a lot to learn. I went to the triplea site and saw the screenshots and almost fell out of my chair, i have to play this game online!
Me and my two A&A friends have developed "set" moves, we know what our strategys are and more or less the first turn with each county is set in stone. What happens after the first round of play is improvised depending on the first turn. Dont get me wrong, we have some very solid moves, but we played a game with someone outside our group and he shook things up. We looked at each other and shook our heads because we never even thought of these first round moves!
When you play tripla on line, are you downloading the entire game or are you using a game disk and they just run it?
pagan

triple-a you download the program
playing it is fairly easy, as you just run the program and mess around with it.
playing online requires you to have a 'soft' knowledge of your internet IP
but dont worry about that, if you can download it and play it (there is a seriously crappy computer opponenet) then you are 75% of the way to getting online games
.
.
what could be more interesting for you to do is to play via email.
MapView allows you to do your turn and send it to your opponenet, who eventually does his turn and sends it back.
I'd be willing to show you how to play MapView via email. It is a program you have to download. but its up to you to get it and contact me.

It never hurts to ask questions, hitler. And remember EVERYone here was new to computers at one time. You just ask whatever you need to, the guys here have always seemed to be really helpful.
(I remember my first few days online... I couldnt click open a file to save my life and Forget cutting and pasting - sheesh. Makes me laugh now. It all comes clear eventually)

That's a typical experience when you first play with people outside of a tight knit group. When Hasbro first released the old A&A on CD and I started online play, my horizons expanded to all kinds of strategies I had never seen before.

I`m hitler on all websites i go to. I used to base the name on the site topic, but i lost my paper with the names on it once, and this works better. Of course, it could be a little tastless if i`m not carefull where i go.
Anyhow, i tried to do the download again. I was wrong, the mirror didnt try to charge me anything, it was some program called "Win-Zip". I selected some option i think it was a trial period or something and got a message that my computer didnt have enough memory to download the game. No big surprise there, this is a relic from the cold war. I`ve got a new system coming today from dell, when i get it hooked up and running in a couple of weeks {i hope thats a joke}, i`m going to be playing online if it kills me.
I saw an A&A game at walmart, but it looked more like command and conquer than the board game. Thanks again for the help, i`ll probably be back for more.

i hope to see you around triplea. it would be good to see you on the realtime for a game.
when you get aaa installed come to this website for realtime gaming with players around the world. http://www.triplea.stackedqueens.com/chat/chat.php
there is usually only a few players there at anytime so you might have to wait a few minutes for an opponent, but its well worth the wait

do NOT purchase the computer real-time-strategy RTS game
it is beyond lame.
it is NOT Axis & Allies
the only thing Axis & Allies about it is the name.
the name was used to try to sell the program

I had to click start, click all files, then click triplea. I played against the computer but have`nt tried to play against a human yet. Is there a way to raise the a.i.?
pagan
10-09-2006, 12:54 AM
The A.I. is a crappy player.
it is EXTREMELY difficult to create a quality AI opponent for A&A. I like the AI as a good play tester for people to get used to the game mechanics.
If you want to play a real game, then you have to get a human.
If your internet connection is Firewalled , then you wont be able to be the HOST, unless you switch your IP to the DMZ setting (open to receive, basically).
But dont worry, you dont have to be the host to play. You can just join having the other guy be the host.
the HOST will tell you what IP to put into the Server Address
--NAME (whatever)
--PORT (leave it alone)
--Address (you put in the HOST address)
then you connect to his opening screen and can type-chat & play

You have to email me and we can set up a time for Triple_A
I can also show you how to use MapView by playing a few turns in a game with you : www.motcreations.com
I even made a step by step help file to use mapview on my old AA webpage :
www.geocities.com/aa_4online/
You can find current games using mapview that you can look at in the forum, @ the House Rules section of this AH Axis & Allies web area
