View Full Version : Worldwide Campaign

One idea I have been kicking around is a campaign that everyone on the boards would play in. Games Workshop does this with its fan base and I thought it would be neat if we did the same with A & A. GW usually does a ladder campaign of linked scenarios and players register and report the results of the battles. I think it would be cool if we ran one that would span from 1939-1945 to replay action of the war in the European, N. African, and Asian/Pacific theaters. We would play battles with existing units from that year and perhaps keep a thread updated with battle results. Some adventurous soul with abilities in excel could calculate the results. Although, it would be nice if Avalon Hill or Wizards thought of something like this first.
It would be neat to see what the results were like in such a campaign, and to see if history would be re-written. :D

Sounds like a massive, albeit very cool, undertaking.
The first question would have to be - HHR (or similar) or Standard Game Rules?

I can definitely see the reasoning for using the HHR, especially regarding anit-aircraft rules, but I think the standard rules are more accessible to players. The result, of course, is the chance of less historical outcomes, i.e., the Battle of Britain would be alot different.
An option could be that the campaign could be played by HHR players only, which would lower the amount of players to reasonable level.
I guess I wish Wizards would run something like this using the standard rules. For instance they could say this year we are doing the battle for north africa, here's a ladder campaign of linked scenarios, play your battles and report the results. Play would go on from say, May to August, results are tallied and posted in September.

Good Idea!
I would suggest standard rules - they are not that bad aside from miscosting.
I would strongly suggest that we do not use competitive, but somewhat "historical" builds i.e. put aLight mortars in Wehrmacht infantry platoons etc..

One thing I considered was having campaign years, we start in 1939 and as each campaign year progresses chronologically, each year restricts the types of units used, i.e., in campaign year 1942 you can only use 1939-1942 units.

Well not that I don't think this is a cool idea and all but the
GW battle for Medusa was poorly undertaken and resulted in no one at my hobby store or any of the other hobbies stores in the area partaking, in fact, it was just a few days shy of the new warhammer fantasy release. We have tons and tons of GW people here and no one played the battle for medusa.
I'm totally shocked that they didn't do fantasy campaign instead of 40k and plan it for the release time...but then again...that's GW
This is an interesting idea. We have been kicking around an idea very similiar, but focused more on a more specific land-sea campaign such as the battle for Soloman Islands or North Africa for the web site. For what should be obvious reasons...

I'm going to guess and say the free HBFronts maps that Graphy made. Right?
