just wondering when did the board members begin with a&am
and why did they start?

i personally started playing this game in the base set

i started playing this game, because at the time, Axis and allies the boardgame
was my favorite game(for boardgames , video games, etc.)
and i loved the idea of actually using "historically" ;) accurate figures

I started playing in the base set also, but a couple factors kept me from really pursuing it until fairly recently. The local buzz died really fast, and the only game nights were nights that I worked. Also, I just didn't have the money at the time to accumulate a significant collection because of the (still) outrageous price of boosters. My situation has changed now and I can pursue it more freely. :)

First set. Saw it on the shelf, got this bad, bad feeling that my wallet felt too. We commiserated together later over a couple of beers while looking through the units from the starter set.

Case of set V on order.

Started playing this past summer; just after the D-Day set was released I believe. Hadn't really payed any attention to the game until I saw some packaged "singles" hanging from the wall at my LGS. I believe that it was the StuG III that first caught my eye! Started to have a closer look at the other miniatures hanging there and thought to myself these look pretty cool; I wonder what the rules are like. Went home and downloaded the rulebook . . . and the rest shall we say is history. I do NOT want to know how much I've spent on this game in the short time that I've been into it.

I've always had a great interest in WWII - at the tactical level - (owned pretty much every Airfix HO soldier set they sold in the late 70's, then bought/played/loved Squad Leader in the early 80's) and the Napoleonic era (still waiting for "the" game set in this era to come out though). In more recent times have played things like Epic Armageddon, Warmaster, B.F.G., Battle Cry, Wings of War and Twilight Imperium. Have also really enjoyed the entire Memoir'44 series from DoW and am really looking forward to their upcoming Battlelore - it simply looks AWESOME!!! Also of current interest is the upcoming Star Wars Miniatures Starship Battles, War at Sea and Combat Commander.

So many cool games coming out . . . and so little money . . . :( :)

For me A&AM is like a trip back in time to when I used to play with my plastic Airfix soldiers and tanks in my sandbox. Now, as an adult, I can once again play with toy tanks and soldiers and justify it by saying there's "rules." :D Very, very FUN!!! Can't wait to get my hands on some of the new miniatures in Set V. I think that German paratroopers were one of the, if not, the first sets of Airfix toy soldiers I bought some 30 years ago! Ahh . . . the memories.

My son and I started when it was just the Basic Set. We joined the local Denver area group in August and been having a great time the whole time through.

I started relativly recently... but I've been playing constantly and learning like a nazi in such a short period of time (pardon the pun) In a relatively short period of time I would say I have become one of the top players in my area...

they say Im obsessed, I say I have 2 more turns to capture my objective :D

Damn Russian Black Market. *L*

<edit> We (co-gamer and I) started when the Base Set came out. We had been playing board A&A, having followed the progression - A&A, A&ARev, A&A Europe, A&APacific, & A&A D-Day when we found it. Just the next step in evolution. *L*

I actually didn't get into it until Contested Skies was released. I still don't have complete sets of the earlier sets. I still don't own a single SSPG (and yes I still win games as the Germans). Most of my units are from the Contested Skies and DDAy sets so my armies look a little weird compared to most.
I'm also that guy that doesn't own a suitcase full of units. Everything I own still fits in one small flat tacklebox. My largest army is German and I have just over 600 points of them. Limited? Yes. Fun? Damn straight. Creative? Oh yeah.

** {I} started with the base set at it's GenCon debeut & brought my report on the game back to the rest of the group (none of whom could attend that year) at the local shop.
AAM play at the shop was fairly limited for awhile with only 3 of us, but then picked up nearer Set II. Right now (depending upon work/school/etc schedules) we get between 5-12 players on Axis night. 5 or 6 average, with the higher turn outs being when the more vetern gamers amongst us set up historical (based) battles or bring in the 3-d terrain.
Recently we've done "Market Garden"(pure AAM), and two themed mega-battles - one desert/NA based & the other winter/Russian in nature. Both mega-battles used AAM rules(mostly) combined with the pts/army lists out of Flames of War.
MG was 6 players, 200 pts each, reasonably historicly accurate given some collections.
The Desert/Winter games were each played at 6k pts pts per side in FoW costs & open to as many players as could make them (given relitive short notice). I've NO idea how many AAM pts those 2 games totaled.....
(and Yes, someday one of us'll remember to take & post pics)

Next up I'm considering some sort of actual campaign system. The initial outline of wich is scrawled on a napkin atm..... It'll probably take form after the holidays though.

Started xmas 2005, when a friend of mine saw it on the shelf in the LGS, and mailed me to tell me "Is this something for your son?". I hinted my dad (an oldtime wargamer who brought me into wargaming when I was nine ), and told hom (my son will probably love grandpa if you give him this for xmas. So we spent the xmas hollidays with a starter and 4 boosters, and when then I got hooked, and hooked some friends, and we started to buy cases. I buy the minis, and send all the ones my son collect his way.

I heard about it before GENCON. The family and I drove to GENCON 2005 for the free LEs from Heroscape. We did the demo and that was it for me. They sold out of A&AM and Heroscape stuff in 15 minutes!! My middle son demo'd everything and won a starter. He ran out of money and was more than happy to sell it to me for $20. It had a Tiger I as the rare. We got home late but I managed to play a few games solo - I was in love and have been addicted ever since.

I started the game about a month before it was released. I had seen the write ups on A&AM on the internet and seen the previews by WotC before GenCon last summer. It looked like a good light wargame, and I had a buddy who liked wargames that weren’t too complex, so it was one of the things I looked for when I got there. I got a starter and a booster and got into the league for a game. It played like a good light tactical game and I was hooked. I won my game and so I got a free German halftrack for that and I played several of the demos and got more pieces for that. The next week I found this board where I could discuss the game with everyone else interested in the game. The first couple of months there was a lot of interest in the game, and it was easy to find someone to play and/or teach the game to.

Things have changed a lot since then.

Between Eastern Front and Contested Skies. I'd seen a write up on it on the 'net and tries the demo version online. It seemed really, really basic to me at first. Then, after I got the starter and a few boosters, realized just how complex the game can be. Then I sold my old Warhammer 40K stuff that had been gathering dust to feed my habit. Must say, I've been delighted by it so far and I'm really looking forward to Reserves (I have two cases on order). My friend that I usually play with doesn't have nearly the same number of units as I, but we get by well as he is usually more strategic than I am so it's usually close.

I'm putting together a few armies for this next weekend to demo for a few other friends so hopefully the community can gain some momemtum.

I started last year at GenCon. Im a lucky chap because I actually get to teach the game to people and do the demos for WoTC at the different shows they attend. It's funny because they never have to ask me which table I want to be at to do the demos at the shows. Everyone else wants to do SWM or DDM or Magic.

I was completely hooked last year when we were given a tour of the booth before the crowds got there. It was amazing to see that huge blown up church with different millitary vehicles in from of it. I actually never did a AAM demo at the 2005 GenCon. The reason being is that was also the year they came out with the AT-AT for Star Wars and I was the Guru on that at the time.

My love changed from Star Wars to AAM because the game has always reminded me of my grandfather who fought in WWII.

I have loved the game from day one. Up to that point I had never played any other war game so I didn't have anything to compare its mechanics against. When ever we "swag" out after the shows I always pick up as much AAM I can get my hands on. Maybe thats why I have such a huge collection (5000+ figures).

We demo'd it on that first Thursday - 2nd or 3rd group? We did it on the hood of the JEEP. Was that you? The guy gave us Japanese MG teams with MG42 cards. The guy invited my wife to the tourney that was on that Saturday.

Im suprized they didn't call security because of that!

:D

Nope like I said I didn't do any demos of AAM that whole weekend at GenCon.

I was at the AT-AT table the whole time makin sure I squished rebel scum!

I will be doing demos at SoCal next month ripping open boosters anxiously trying to see that Me 262 spill out onto the table.

It's funny because last year at SoCal was when Set II was to come out. We were able to get boosters a week before it was released to the public. I opened 2 boosters each day and pulled 4 King Tigers. Needless to say I was happy. I was also amazed at the size of the PAK 40 at the time.

It is amazing how many people have come and gone since last year. I can only think of a handful of people that have been here since the beginning. I still like the game and think I will play it for years to come. I think there was a lot of misconceptions and some genuinely bad desicions made, but it is still a good product. I will only buy enough for one set because I have been sucked into WoW TCG, so my funds will be going North and South.

I saw a poster hanging up in the store of the local mall. Went home thought about it for a while. Convinced a friend to commit to it and started out with the base set shortly after thier release.

Back in June 2005, after a long absence from the A&A boards, I checked back to see if there were any new developments for A&AR.

There was a new message board for some collectable game called Axis and Allies Miniatures. I was greatly interested in the game's fantastic potential and enjoyed the speculation and discussion that lead up to it's release and continues to this day.

I resisted at first, but by set II a friend and I agreed to start because we needed a change of pace from Mechwarrior, which was our staple for two years prior. We enjoy our games immensely (perhaps twice a month or so), but since he is engaged (poor guy) and my son and I play 4 other games funds are limited. We go halves on a case each release and trade for the armies we play. It's great, but variety is the spice of life. I can't imagine not throwing down Warmachine or MW or the upcoming sci-fi AT-43 pre-painted game. We're actually hoping for only two A&A minis releases next year, so we can have time to enjoy all of our favorite new units before the next set comes out.

Actually I was playing with the airfix vehicles and soldiers during the early 60's more than 40 years ago. The vehicles were prebuilt back then as opposed to the models kits of today.

Although I don't remember which set was the first, I definately had German Soldiers, 8th Army, Marines and US Army and Japanese. the German paratroopers may have come out soon after those.

And I was lucky enough to find out about set one, so I started with the base set.

I think that I still have most of them in a box somewhere at my folks place. My 8 year would love them. Note to self . . . Now that I think of it some of these models would be great for A&AM. Lots of variety: Yes, German Infantry & Airforce, & Ski Troops, Africa Corps, British 8th Army, British Commandos (w/kayaks!) & Paratroopers, Amercican Infantry, Marines & Paratroopers, Japanese Imperial Army, Soviet Red Army, Italians and many, many others I can't even remember right now, not to mention all the WWI armies of all the major powers + Napoleonic era armies and the armies of the American Revolution! I wonder how the A&AM rules would work within a WWI setting?
