View Full Version : Drafting Reserves

When a new set comes, a couple of friends and myself usually buy a case (we are thinking about buying two cases for set V Reserves). We go to a bar, order a round of beers and open all the boosters from the case. We then put all the rares together, same for uncommons and commons.
Then we roll dices to see who picks first, second and third, and we draft all units starting with rares.
We have a lot of fun doing this.
My question is what would be your first choice if you had to pick first. What would be your next best choices in order? What would be your first choice for a plane? What would be the very last unit you'd pick?
Here's the Rare list to make up your mind:
* Gloster Meteor
* F4U Corsair
* Dornier Do335
* Messerschmitt Me 262
* Kawanishi NIK-J "Shiden-Kai"
* BT-7
* IS-3
* SU-152
* T-35
* Soviet M3 Lee
* Centurion A41
* M4 Sherman T-34 Calliope
* Elefant
* Panther Ausf.D
* Type 3 Chi-Nu
I got my eyes set on the SU-152 (lots of choices for Soviet fans here!).
I would love to get a T-35 tto and maybe a BT-7 if the stats are good.
Since I also like to play Japan, my first choice for planes would be the Shiden Kai. The very last unit I would pick would probably one of the big heavy and costly tanks that I will never play anyway (Elefant or IS-3).

That's kinda how we do things. We all chip in for a couple of cases, get some pizza & whatnot and split up the boosters amongst ourselves. Everyone then begins trading for what they want. I'm going to try your bidding idea; we need a lot of order around here.
Oh, right, our five most wanted rare units:
*Shiden-Kai
*Gloster Meteor
*F4U Corsair
*Elefant
*Me 262
Not necessarily in that order.
Oh, by the way, if you're wondering why I switch between 'I' and 'we', that's because there's a whole bunch of us here: TheGuardianGroup. :D

Mr. Murphy. You obviously go to a different kind of bar than I do. If I started plopping plastic soldiers on the table at my local watering hole I'd have 2 types of response.
1) "Toy soldiers? What are ya? Some kind of freak. My kid plays with toy soldiers. Hey look guys, this freak is playing with toy soldiers."
or
2) "Can these little guys swim?" *drops Fallschirmjager into bottle of Molson Canadian*
Maybe I need to find a new bar. :D

lol - lol I wouldn't be doing that around here either! Mr. Murphy must live in kinder, gentler place :)

In Calgary. Maybe if you put little white Stetsons on all your infantry and called them all Ralph Klein you could get away with it. :D But not at the Stampeder (does that hole still exist? I haven't been to Calgary in a lot of years)

lol That's why I've basically gotten out of other miniatures games; got tired of painting and making conversions. I'm afraid that all those little white Stetson conversions would be quite an undertaking :D I don't know that the Stampeder is still around but there are still plenty of redneck establishments around in which you can find youself some trouble if you're so inclined. lol

We've found that taverns are a more hospitable place for miniatures. :D

Yes, I'm sure that a nice quiet pub far away from the mainstream traffic would be fine. I remember seeing a group of people playing the Settlers of Catan in a pub while enjoying a few drinks. I thought that was both cool and geeky at the same time. :D lol

Well I don't know if you'd call it a bar.
Not the kind of place to meet women, more of a place to meet friends
It's a more of a pub really, you can order meals.
Big place with lots of space and tables and TVs everywhere where you can watch sports. We go during the afternoon (between lunchtime and suppertime) when we're almost the only clients there.
I don't care how people look at me. Me and at least one of my buddies are pretty big guys maybe that's why no one ever bothered us.
But I disgress and you haven't answered the question Cannonfodder and Krimsonstarr.

My take on the list, and why:
1- Type 3 Chi-Nu: Japan REALLY needs something that stands a fighting chance against a Sherman, so this is a MUST so that Japan is really playable.
2- BT-7: I'm a historical scenario fan. This is a VERY important tank in the opening stages of Barbarossa. I will get 3 of these, if I can help it.
3- F4U Corsair: What can I say? I'm a sucker for gull-wings! :D
4- SU-152: Big, brutish, polyvalent. What could you ask more?
5- Messerschmitt Me 262: Ah... a jet fighter. Bliss!
6- M4 Sherman T-34 Calliope: Yes, another Sherman variant. But rocket tubes are cool!
7- Elefant: A frightening piece to face, but probably overpriced anyways.
8- Panther Ausf.D: A repaint? I have 4 of the SS variety, so I'll sub. A needed not overpriced german MBT.
9- T-35: Weird, so fun!
10- Kawanishi NIK-J "Shiden-Kai": Too little, too late.
11- Dornier Do335: As above.
12- Soviet M3 Lee: Repaint. Have two of the original. Will sub. Less useful than the repaint Panther because the USSR already has great armor.
13- Gloster Meteor: Was forbidden to fly outside of territorial UK. A what-if piece.
14- Centurion A41: What-if.
15- IS-3: Already got the overpriced IS-2. What are they gonna do with that one, beside armor 8?
Anyways, these are my picks. I know that everybody has different needs, but do consider that this is from a scenario/historical player.
Hope this helps!

Must be my adult ADHD kicking in. :o
Overall 1st choice - SU-152 (x2)
A close 2nd - Panther Ausf.D (x2)/IS-3/Elefant
1st choice of a plane - Messerschmitt Me 262!!!
Last choice - Soviet M3 Lee (Lame! :rolleyes: , If I have the misfortune of getting one of these I'll be getting rid of it as soon as I can.)

Corsair, IS-3, and a tie between the Sherman Caliope and Centurion.
*Damn England needs a good tank.*

I want to see the stats and the SA for the Me 262 first but I think I'll hunt that one. For the Allies probably the IS3 (should be a freakshow of a tank) or the SU 152. I'm a sucker for technology and big tanks.
The unit I'm most likely to see in Calgary is the Drunken Cowboy. (stats all +1 on Canadian Infantry to show drunken bravado. SA tough, due to being too drunk to know he's hurt. SA Easy to spot -he's loud, he's proud that he's loud, and he's wearing a white cowboy hat in the middle of battle.)
No hurt feelings I hope, I lived in Calgary for 2 years a while back. Great people, good fun, just a little to Western for me. :D
