View Full Version : Large unit transport revisited

I'ma ware that Large units (17-pounder, Bofors, etc.) can only be transported if they start the game on board the transport, and that when they dismount the units are displaced into an adjacent hex of the opponent's choosing in order to avoid being overstacked with the transport. Assuming I have this correct, my question is what the heck are Brit players suppsoed to do, especialy on large maps? The primary brit AT gun (the 6-pounder won't scratch most of the medium or larger German tanks, and stands virtually no chance vs a Bruumbar) and the only brit AA gun can only be transportred if a separate transport is bought for each and every gun. (that can add up to a lot of points) Furthermore, even if one does spend the points for all these transports, they can only tow the guns once per game. This is very frustrating and unrealsitic, as any towed gun should be able to limber up and hitch to a transport when it's needed elsewhere, not just once per game. Back when Tally-ho worked on artillery, it may have been possible for a 17-pounder to move into a transport's hex and mount up since mounted units don't count towards stacking and stacking only applies at the end of a unit's movement. (at which point the 17-pounder is mounted and therefore doesn't count towards stacking?) Now it's certainly clear that this is not the case because artillery can only move during the assualt phase, when mounting a transport is not allowed.
Now that I'm done ranting, a more reasonable question. Is there any chance that we will see errata allowing large artilery to be transported in a more normal manner, or will that be relegated to house rules while tournament play
(not that I play in tourneys, but it still irks me) will continue to leave the 17-pounder and Bofors stranded even with transports available.

Assuming I have this correct, Not quite. Units that dismount into an overstacked condition are repositioned by the owning player. This is covered in the Important Clarifications thread.
any towed gun should be able to limber up and hitch to a transport when it's needed elsewhere, not just once per game. Given the one-minute time frame of a turn, it's actually not logical that heavy guns could be limbered in one turn. Their crews would need to really hustle to accomplish that maneuver in less than an entire 10-turn game.

It must either begin the turn in the same hex with the transport, or the transport must move to its hex -- which it can't do if the two aren't allowed to stack together.

I am aware of this. What I am saying is why can they do it (according to the game rules) with a 6-pounder, a 3" gun, a Pak38, but not a Bofors 40mm or a 17-pounder?

Ah. That's an obvious one I shouldn't have missed.

I'll accept that, but it makes me sad.
