Anyone know of any turn based WWII stradegy games for the pc or handheld systems that is close to Axis& allies.. I was picking up some apps and learning some java to produce this game. I feel it would be simple to do. Just wondering if anyone else had the same idea? Let me know.. :D

Are you serious about AH Squad Leader Cruizin2000, this is a flop my friend. The engine is so poor.

Close Combat, Sudden Strike are better, even if dating.

Dont forget that AH/Microprose Squad Leader game was developped before by Microprose, then they use the SL franchise name bought by Hasbro a year before.

Dont try this game, it sucks so bad...

I've had it for about 4 years and finally got to play it a month ago - twice. I liked what I did get to see. I really like games on that scale. The scenario with the German sniper on the hill is deadly.

My favorite is still the East Front and West Front games by Talonsoft. Turn based game and you can be Canadians. They even have a Canadian campaign.

I agree Squad Leader is horrible. I really enjoyed the Blitzkreig series of games. Steel Panthers is a great clasic game.

Cruzy if you like Squad Leader try Silent Storm. It a turn based game like Squad Leader but the graphic and effects are much better. You can do cool things like throw a handgrenade into a room and blast the enemy out the back door!

I would have to say that the best is the Close Combat series of games (I've played Eastern Front and D-Day, I can't remember the earlier ones) is my favorite for WW2, the problem is they haven't put out a new one in years...I like it because you get a fixed unit pool to select from, pick your force (or use the one they set up for you in the scenario) and then its a realtime battle. So you have to monitor and adjust to the fluid battlefield without having to do all the resource management that has little to do with tactics. You need to take care of your tanks or better troops instead of mass produce them and charge them into the enemies base which I find to be the focus in RTS.

If your going for FPS go with Call of Duty 2, just a side note.

I've played the Company of Heros game and it definately is nice graphically and is a little bit better at strategy aspects than most RTS games, but it still focuses on build a base that can produce the best, the fastest, and charge.

Now if your looking for any strategy games for inspiration or just a great time, the Total War series is my favorite, Rome rocked, and Medieval 2 is going to be amazing! There is also a strong community that puts out modifications so you buy 1 game and can play it many differant ways depending on what you are looking for.

I concur :) Lots of fun, as is its' older sibling WH 40K: Dawn of War (& Dark Crusade).

Have also had a lot of FUN playing Blitzkrieg & Blitzkrieg II.

Codename: Panzers was also fun!

Have to throw in a current Napoleonic era game as well: Cossacks II

Mind you these are all RTS games. Haven't played a really good turn-based WWII game in years.

A lot of you are referring games that are not turn based. Although they may be fantastic games, not being turn based makes them not viable answers to the original question.

The best turn based games that I know that are to the correct scale of A&A miniatures would be either Squad Battles: Eagles Strike by HPS Simulations and John Tiller or Steel Panthers World at War by Gary Grigsby.

If it's turn based A&A at the Strategic scale that you are really looking for, then all I can think of is Gary Grigsby's World at War by Matrix games.

I don't play any strategy. But I do know one great Tacticle first-person shooter type WW2 game.

It's called Forgotten Hope, it's a complete mod for Battlefield: 1942.

Drive Ha-Go's, Chi-Ha's, Brummbars, Tigers, King Tigers, Panther D's and G's, Panzer II/III/IV's, Sdf 222's, T-34s, KV-1s, KV-2s, IS-2s, Greyhounds, Shermans, Fireflys, Churchills, Cromwells, Stuarts and MORE!

Plus, aircraft of all types.

Really nice physics and ammo/armor modelling.

*Chuckles*
My favorite RTS of all time is Age Of Mythology, but I don't think that qualifies here... Unless the Axis used Minotaurs to attack the Allies.
Hm...

Allied Soldier"Sir! Some big, hairy thing is attacking our right flank!"
Allied Captain"What? Get some reinforcements over there ASAP!"
*A Minotaur appears from the right and gores the Captain*
Allied Captain: "That's going to hurt in the morning."

There is a computer game not in stores but available in download only that is a direct version of the board games of all axis and allies except D-Day. In addition to that there are other types of versions of axis and allies in that same download. Be wary the downloadable version may crash on occasion, but is also playable online because the AI really suck.

It does look very good! The next step in the evolution of the awesome Combat Mission series! I've also played both CM: Beyond Overlord & CM: Barbarossa to Berlin and enjoyed them very much. The comparisons to ASL are for the most part accurate. Haven't tried out the Africa Korps edition of the game though.

I love Company of Heroes. I've played Panzers, which looked great at the time, but CoH is much more enjoyable.

I really like how CoH combines the sector-capturing from Dawn of War with the WWII theme. It's not really a strategy game, "real-time tactics" would be a better label.

There is a lot of micromanagement involved, so you will see only a small number of tanks and troops on a map. But each unit has its benefit, if placed and used effectively.

It's really a great game for every Axis & Allies Player since there are so many familiar units in it, e.g. the StuG, the Sherman Calliope, the Ostwind (quite devastating brother of the Wirbelwind Flakpanzer) and the Nebelwerfer - yeah, Reserves already included ;)

The graphics, physics(!) and especially the sound are awesome. We even used a replay of a skirmish-game as "background noise" for our D-Day AAM scenario once. (Not recommended: It looks so damn good it will distract you if the screen is visible).

Okay, it's not turn based and tank battles sometimes look silly. So don't expect a Combat Mission --- CoH is a very tense, action packed, fast paced game.

Check out my review (german language): http://www.3ntain.de/wordpress/?p=190

I'd give it 9 / 10.

CoH is a great game, but, as stated before, it's not a true strategy game. It's been praised (not specifically on this thread) for "realism". IMO, you can't have a "realistic" game as long as the units have bars of health (also, why are Pershings in Normandy?).

If you want real time strategy, go with any of the Close Combat games. If you want action that looks like WWII, try CoH.

I forgot to mention that Grigsby's World at War was just released last month so it's brand new.

It also looks like most of the suggestions on this thread have nothing to do with Turn based computer games so maybe their isn't enough interest for you to make another one. :(

Well they're not turn based but the Close Combat series are some of my favorites of all time. "CC3: The Russian Front" is probably the best of the lot. Sudden Strike is another fun real time game. Its like the next gen from CC. Historical accuracy is really good for the CC series, at least as far as i've seen.

I have to chime in here:

I found the latest members of the Panzer General series to be highly addictive turn-based WWII games. Panzer General 3D, despite sounding like an of FPS, is an excellent hex-and-turn based game. There are several campaigns, whose scenarioes depend on how well you do in previous scenarioes; they cover North Africa, The Western Front, Normandy, and (should you do very well as the Germans in France), Britain and the East Coast of the USA.

Panzer General III: Scorched Earth is a slightly-updated sequal, covering the Eastern Front. There are tweaks to a couple of mechanics, but the graphics and gameplay are just as good as PG

You should be able to pick up both games from E(vil)-you-know-where for less than $10.

That's my 2 ep worth;
