1. I would be ****** off if I paied $50 for a game that gave me less pieces than the original. I will not buy the game until a fix has been made or a PC version comes out.
2. However, how many times have you started an A&A game (any edition) with a large number of forces on the board, and by round 3 most of the pieces have been killed off and most of your territories have been cleared? Perhaps they just assume most games will end up like this, so to save money (but keep the price high end), they molded less units. Perhaps there was too much money that went into the grapics department or something, so they had to cut money else where. If thats the situation, I think they made the wrong decision to cut back on something that impacts the buyer/customer.

From my limited experience in this area, it is not making the pieces that is really expensive, but making the molds. Once you have the molds, you can make plastic units pretty cheaply...

i would like more pieces too, truth is though that the original had 299, the new game has 366

There are more total pieces in the new game but don't forget they added two new types. That would likely make up the difference in piece count.

Artillery- 8x5=40
Destroyers- (4x6)+2=26
Total New Units- 66
There is the difference between the two versions. The problem is when they shifted the numbers in the other units. You only get 6 Japanese armor when Germany get 10 submarines.
USSR- 60 Total Units
Germany- 72 Total Units
UK- 69 Total Units
Japan- 71 Total Units
USA- 70 Total Units
Glaring Deficiencies:
USSR- Bomber(2), Destroyer(2)
Japan- Armor(6)
Minor Deficiencies:
UK- Bomber(3), Transport(6)
USA- Transport(6)
More parts and thicker cardboard for the charts. Yes, I can fix them with heavier backing, but why should I? It should come with more meat!

Russia is never really going to need many bombers...
However, the 6-7 transports for US IS a pretty bad mistake...

Are the Russian units identical to the AAE set?
PS Those pale green Brits look horrible.

There may be more pieces overall, but do remember, not only are there new units as was stated already, but also the game board appears to have several new territories, especially on major battle fronts. This will bring down the number of opportunities of using chips in comparison to the original. Instead of spltting your front line on say 3 territories, now it may be something more like 5. Which I feel is a great revision of the game, but may have needed to be taken into consideration when deciding on the unit supply.
But on the other hand, when reading through Mike's articles, he referenced several times to many play tests, and I am sure that Avalon Hill experimented with the number of pieces during those tests. Or at least would have seen that the 366 pieces (I think thats the number) would not have been sufficient.
I guess I just like to play devil's advocate with things like this. tongue.gif

oops...make that
10 German Tanks
15 Japanese Infantry
15 Russian Infantry
I looked at the back of the box and ther is a total of each piece that should be in the box...after counting all the pieces and comparing I am short some of the totals on the back of the box...like infantry and fighters and tanks...I might have a bad box.
What does the box say about the units you are short on and how many are you missing of those?

I don't know about some of you guys, but here are the main pieces I seemed short on...
Grey Chips 59
German tanks 12
Japanese Inf 18
Russian Inf 13
Hmm...I think I will count all of mine up and see what the total actually is.
