I didn't know it was even possible to go into a vertical dive attitude in a CH-46.

It's actually a CH-47. See the bulge that runs the whole length of the side?
A 46 and a 47 look very similar, but a 47 is much bigger.
A CH-46's "sponsons" (the bulges) are only on the aft end of the fuselage.
Sincerely,
An old 46 avionics tech

PS I wouldn't want to make a habit of such an impressive maneuver, especially in a Viet Nam-era helicopter.

Your right, my mistake. It's been years since I devoted much attention to modern aircraft, the only thing I had for id reference was a hazy memory of a CH-46 model I had built years ago.

It's definitely possible. Whether you can get out of that attitude safely is another question...

I meant a controlled vertical dive. It's certainly possible to get into an uncontrolled vertical dive attitude with just about any airframe.

Oh, you meant that. :D

I supposed it's possible to be in a controlled vertical dive, given sufficient attitude. But it won't be a pleasant ride, for sure.

Viet Nam, hell the Marines still use CH-46 and CH-53D (yes D) and yes you can dive like that in both. (powerplants mech and AO)
