On the first turn, besides the historical Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese player can send some planes to try to hit the forces at the US west coast. Has anyone tried this with good results? - by good results, I mean making it back with most of your planes/carriers intact or inflicting total damage on both Pearl and the US West Coast that had lasting effect. Every story I've heard of someone trying this (and the one time I tried it) was disastrous to the Japanese player. Either the Japanese player suffered enormous losses despite the 1st turn Allied defense of 1, or ended to overextended to escape the concentration of new US builds.
