View Full Version : Map square size?

From photos, squares seem to be 3,5" - Do I see it right? It doesn't seem like they are equal -sided, though. How long is the other side? Can anyone that has seen a map confirm?
Thinkin about possibility of making terrains... It also makes me think of the rules - larger ships definitely fit just in 2 squares, but it also seems like that two major ships can't fit well into same 2 squares.

From what Richard Baker has said previously on the boards, the photo from the quick start guide does not accurately depict the size of the map in relation to the ships:
Each sector on the play map is about 5" across and represents about 5,000 yards....
That makes the stacking limits sound a lot more reasonable. If both players have the maximum number of units in a single sector — 2 ships, 1 sub and 4 aircraft each — things could get a little crowded. But I don't think you'll run into that situation very often.
According to the original Opening Salvo for War at Sea, you can create maps up to 30" x 40". If sectors are 5" across, that would translate to a battle map with 48 different sectors (6 x 8) representing a space approximately 17 miles by 23 miles.

Ok, thanks Marcus!
Closer look also reveals that a square consists of 8x8 small squares, which supports the idea that squares are of equal side lengths after all.
5x5 squares - this would mean that terrain elements should be pretty large too!

Check out the quick start guide. That might also help get an idea for terrain.

I've been trying to get everything out of it already... out-of-scale ships are just a bit disorienting.
But I think I'll keep out of modelling until I know more about rules & whether I get into the game or not.
Tomorrow it's one week since the last preview. Maybe we get some new, interesting info then! :D

Okay, this means we're looking for 1:180,000 scale maps to fight on. Anyone have a period map of Pearl Harbor that can be enlarged to the right size?

How about using the island tiles from Wizkids' Pirates! as terrain?

How about Memoir 44 terrain tiles?

Your terrains are awesome they inspired are builder to take this game to the next level and go 3D. thanks for the link.

Possible, we can also use Pirates of ___ terrain (printed on island reverses) as terrain, including reefs, fogbanks and icebergs if anyone wants to fight in polar waters. What happens if you sail the Yamato into the kind of sargasso seas that used to trap wooden hulls back in the Age of Sail?

I imagine the Sargasso seaweed would foul a ship's screws if it stayed in there long enough.

I did some math based on maps, and it looks like Pearl could be done on an 11x17 piece of paper, retaining grid scale. OTOH, you'd need MicroMachines-size ships...
That one would be like shooting fish in a barrel, kinda like the actual battle in that regard.

I did some creative comparisons and took a copy of the picture with the dice and map and loaded it into GIMP.
I then measured a side of a die that appeared to be at the same angle as the map grids. It came to .22". The grid came to .85", both at the same scale.
Figuring that the die are apx. 5/8" on a side that gives me a ratio of (.625*.85)/.22≈2.41" or 2.5".
Given that and the 30" x 40" that would mean a grid of 12x 16 squares.
Just my best guess and we'll have to wait and see.
