a great early war action to fight out (at least using Flecther Pratt rules) is the German destroyer break out from Navik...but we cannot do this either...because...we did not get a Brit H class Destroyer or a German Z1 Class Destroyer...the Z20 German destroyer we did get is required as well but it is of the Z17 Class...

Britain used more than 20 different destroyer classes in WWII — including at least 10 that were designed and built during the war.
Personally, I'd rather have seen a Tribal class instead of a J class for the first set. But it's just not possible to include everything — destroyers, submarines, torpedo boats, fighters, dive bombers and torpedo bombers — for all nations with only 24 common slots.
I don't have a problem with using the HMS Javelin as a stand-in for an H class destroyer for now. In game terms, there will probably be little distinction. Both had the same speed (36 knots) and similar armament (4.7" guns, 0.5" AA).

At least not in the first set, anyway.:)

I would have liked if Set I list was drawn up specifically with the early war battles in mind. Really wish we had all the players for the battle of the Bismarck and for Midway.

I agree but then WOTC would be worried some of us will not buy set II. As someone else posted in another thread, they're laying the foundation for future sets.

I'm new to the collectable gaming thing myself. AAM was my first venture into this money vaporizing realm. Looking at how they dished out the minor partners in AAM only a couple each set, it seems obvious to me that that is just exactly what is going on here. I just hope they keep the Chinese Navy out of set two...

No Chinese until Set III. Set II is based off the formidable Swiss Navy...:D

With the distro in this set, I am curious as to what historical scenarios CAN be played. One would think that when putting together the list of ships to be included in the set, WotC wasn't just looking for historically significant ships, but were also looking to recreate the events that won them that significance. And I'm talking more than just one-on-one gun duels as in the case of the Bismark and Hood. Part of the appeal of this game should include historical scenarios, not just "what if" or anachronistic situations that players could come up with themselves. When I initially saw the release list, I couldn't come up with any historic engagements that didn't require substitution.

True, but the next set won't be released for another six months at least. That's a long time to wait for historical scenarios. WotC should fear the reverse situation: people waiting until set two comes out before buying either set so they can then recreate historic battles that they couldn't from set one. Or just not purchasing the game at all.

I don't know if there are any historical scenarios that can be played at this point without substituting ships. Judging by what AH wrote on the last page of the Quick Start rules. I don't think they were concerned with historic gaming at all. They want us to choose either Axis Or Allies ships, build a fleet and go to war. I don't particullarly like this but, it's all we got at this point. Am I willing to let this ruin my gaming experience? No. Look at AAM. We're still waiting for US and Russian MG's, ect...... Maybe set VI. I imagine after set II we'll still be missing ships and still have to proxy. I hope the game will live past set II. I believe it was Richard Baker that said any further releases after set II would depend on the sales generated from set I and II. I would love to fight the entire Bismark campaign with historical units. Peaking of which, the History Channel is going to replay the Bismark campaign Friday night on the "Dogfight" program.

There's one scenario you can do - Battle of the River Plate. You'll need the Graf Spee, Achilles, Ajax, and Exeter.
After that, you'll have to sit on the available minis for 6 months until the second set comes out and then hope that they include the other missing ships to do other battles with - like the Prinz Eugan and PoW class.
If you had the Lexington class you could do a watered down Coral Sea. The other 3 flattops from Midway are missing too.
Good luck to you guys that spend you cash on these monster money eater. I'm going to keep feeding the A&AM monster myself.
