I was reluctant to buy the new Axis and Allies War at Sea, until I came across this magazine at my local hobby store yesterday. All I can say is WOW! I am hooked!

Go to www.Hobbytown.com and go to the Hobby Outlook magazine section. Look for the cover with R/C cars on a pool table. In that edition, go to the back of the magazine to see an ad for the upcoming game. It shows a beautiful 30" x 40" battle map in full color! When to you see this, you won't be able to wait until the release date in March!

Hmmm, coastlines preprinted on the map, islands on cards, scale is out the window, the carrier and battlewagons are twice the size of every island included. Looks visually stimulating, :D but how is all this fluff going to affect the game play?

Thanks for posting the links. I think this is the best look at the game we've gotten so far.

WOW! they must have made a new map. At gencon LA they had a map that was about 18 x 18 inches and the ships were 6 inches apart. it looked cheesy!

I hope it has a back that doesn't have any islands on it.

Note that it does say maps.

yikes...I hope there is a reverse side to the map that has no coastline...a few islands is enough land for me...

The map here looks thick also. I wonder if this is just a prop to sell the game?

Yeah, I think the second one is all ocean. Be nice if they were thick, and not the micron thin composition of the new A&AM maps, but from pixelgeeks pics, it looks like they are (you can see the ink wearing off the creases and folds).

Here's the deal on the maps:

You get two 20" by 30" map panels. Normally you set them side by side to play the game, so you get a 30" by 40" play area. (That's about the biggest we think the typical kitchen table will accommodate.)

On one side, it's printed with nothing but water, just open sea. On the other side (the side shown in the ad) it's printed with a bit of coastline--specifically, Ironbottom Sound between Guadalcanal, Savo, and Tulagi islands in the Solomons.

The small tiles you see on one side of the board are designed to fit into the sectors, so you can customize the map arrangement by dropping in an island or two. Those are double-sided also, and several are arranged so that you can make two-sector or three-sector islands.

And yes, the minis scale is different from the "ground" scale. The sectors are about 5" across and represent about 5,000 yards. The minis are 1 inch to 150 feet. If you want to play a naval game where the ground scale and minis scale are the same, you'll want to play Fletcher Pratt (and you'll need the floor of a gymnasium!) We're in the business of tabletop games, so that's the choice we make.

Hope that helps to clear things up!

Is the ground scale the same as AAM?

Well, at least the maps look cool.

If you see a bunch of men in an empty parking lot looking through binoculars, there's a copy of Command at Sea nearby.

It is a reversible map I think

Maps (1 looks, 1 sounds) promising.
Minis still don't rock my world yet.
Still on the WaS list (that's Wait and See).

I'm on the wait and see list myself. If I am brought in I'd definetly keep buying down to a minimum, only the main units I wanted.

I was going to say I thought that looked familiar. If you were going to render any area in the world on a map for a naval battle, that was the one to pick.

Bravo!
