I just pulled a P-38 lightning and I was wondering what the general thoughts were when it comes to using it

P38 can be excellent. Strafe can be used to devastating effect. Like all planes though you really need to think about using it in a 100 point game. Until they add the advanced airplane rules planes are just too fragile to put that much of your points into. But hey, try it yourself, you may find that it works very well for you.

In 100 points, well, it's a little risky to use, but, it depends on what your enemy field. In 150+ games, well, I think that it is a good adition to the army.

A gaming buddy of mine loves these planes. In fact he ownes 2 of them. They can quite easily chew up troops out in the open with their "strafe" SA. I on the other hand hate them - being strafed by them that is! :)

I use 2 when I use them. They chew up ammo dumps and whatever's protecting them, or even better, save them for the final objective contest when you need as much fire as possible and want to make your opponent choose targets rather than get freebies.
Great plane.

I like them slightly but not to much. They can be useful if you can hit with them. One game a P-38 only managed to disrupt one arisaka out of two and got shot down in return.
The P-38 is one of the Allies nicer planes to have because of the 'Strafing SA'. Any time I can get two shots per phase for one unit, it's a good thing. But like nearly every plane, it's four defense is weak in comparison to the likely firepower it will face.
Tactically, I use planes usually to look for targets to strafe deep in my opponents territory: Ammo Dumps, HQ, Fuel Depots, Mortars, AT. These units tend to be situated alone, so strafing is not so effective then. But, once those deep targets are eliminated, then I will use the plane to attack infantry, in which case, the strafe does come in handy.

I usually play historical scenarios and don't limit myself to 100 points. When I use planes, including the P-38, I always fly them with a wingman.

Love my two P-38's and have done some great damage with them as they have ripped up some infantry. In a 100 point build I don't take planes but they are great in larger point games.
