The little squares in the big squares are as useful as the jaguar on a hood of a car right?
I am making my own map. And it will be one tough SOB to get all those squares. Too tedious to do.

NO they rule !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you look at the line of site examples in the advanced rules, they are for aligning your ships in the large squares... so you can still hide in behind a island from your opponent.

For LOS?
I use a string, conect it from center of one box to the center of the other box.

Nope look at the advanced rules... has great example
it is not like the AAM game
works much better, so be sure to place your ship in a certain line of small squares...

I think you are confusing the exploded graphics of the example with actual game play. Line of sight is only determined sector to sector using the center target crosshairs, not ship to ship within those sectors.
The only slight variation from AAM is when checking the center to center kine you don't treat sea portions of island sectors as blocking.

From the rule book.
Page: 18
Line of sight
The firing unit must have line of unobstructed line of sight to the target it's attacking. If the line between the CENTER of the attacker's SECTOR AND the CENTER of the target's SECTOR crosses through blocking terrain feature (such as blah blah blah balh.....
I think thats enough.
plus I just checked some ships can not fit all that well in the little boxes.

So I will conclude the mini squares have no significant impact on the game at all.
I hope.

They do serve to make it harder to see the actual lines that divide the sectors. :D

Yup even god makes mistakes. I mean if you want proof just look at all of us. Sitting in front of a computer talking about plastic boats. And when we are not doing that than we are playing with them... even if its in the jacuzzi. ;)

I just laminated my 2 WAS map sheets for $10. It looks good, is very durable and lays flat. No more tidal waves swamping my little ships.

I did find a use for the minor grids. You can use them to place the island/shoal tiles. Instead of aligning with the major grid you can use the minor one. Offsetting the tiles can make a difference with LOS and movement.
