I played a 25X point game yesterday against another local-store regular that was a blast.
He played 4xSharnhorst and 1xBismarck support by about 10 Karl Galsters.
I played a more well rounded fleet with a Yamato+Myoko, Akagi+Shoho, a pair of destroyers, a pair of subs, 1 Betty, and a handful of zeke's, val's and kate's.
He moved his Bismark and two Sharnhorst toward the middle objective while his other went to a side objective. I had placed my 2 subs at the other objective, perhaps inducing him to steer clear :) My surface fleet (minus my 2 carriers which cowered in the back) took the final objective.
Essentially, my planes struck hard early despite his stellar anti-air fire, with the Zekes sinking a pair of Karl Galsters and doing significant damage to one Sharnhorst that they would eventually finish off.
As expected, he captured two objectives while my surface fleet captured the 3rd whilst hiding behind a 2-piece island. My zekes, which I thought were going to be completely useless when I saw he had 0 planes in his force, continued to plink off Karl Galstors while my subs and kates managed to score a hit on his bismark and a pair on another sharnhorst. (I was hoping to damage each of his battleships while keeping the Yamato undamaged so that I could sit at range 4 for as long as possible and get some 'free' hits in on the Bismarck.)
His anti-air fire pretty much decimated my bomber squadrons, leaving me only my 3 zeke squadrons left after turn 4.
Finally, he won initiative and was able to round the corner with one of his Sharnhorsts. The Yamato and her crew would have none of it, penetrating the Sharnhorst's vital armor in one salvo. However, the Sharnhorst was able to score a hit against the Yamato, eliminating my capability of playing my planned extended range strategy.
During this same round, he advanced his Bismarck toward my Akagi and Shoho. The following round, I lost initiative and was forced to charge my Akagi and Shoho toward my Yamato (the Myoko having been sunk previously by some combination of the 2ndary guns of the Sharnhorst, a torpedo from one of the last surviving Karl Galster, and shots from I think the 2ndary guns of the Bismark.
He scored a 2nd hit on the Yamato and took out the Shoho. I lost another zeke at this point. Having rolled a 1 here and a 1 during a 'press the attack' roll, I realized that my planes just didn't want to remain airborn.
Eventually, we got to the scene with the Akagi and Yamato in the same sector, the Bismark 2 sectors away, and an undamaged Sharnhorst on the opposite side of the island from my ships being approached by my 2 'now invulnerable' subs.
Unfortunately, we were playing on another person's maps and they had to go, so we decided to call it a draw. :D It was a fun game, I hope to have many more like it.
