Other than the board being divided into areas, and the theme being D-Day invasion, I see no simularities.

exactly! anybody can basically say that for any axis and allies game.. oh gee i think its based on another game... NO dummy its based on the same battle. Its not gonna have a map of california if its a game based on the d-day invasion. it will be framed in similiar manner only be the association that its covering the same battle.
you can say revised axis and allies is based on SPI global war because it also has a map of the world.. nice analysis.. good greif.

Have you read the rules, Elbow? It's hard to speculate accurately from just the picture. The A&A:Europe map reminded me of Diplomacy when I first saw it, but the games turned out to be quite different.
But surely someone here at the official Avalon Hill message boards has played Break Out: Normandy. Maybe the wise sage (whoever they are) could pipe in and explain the differences and similarities.
Happy Gaming.

well if you look at the original post date, its clear that it (the post) was before the wizzo release, before any information about the new game...
read some of drax's observations on the series and comparison...he articulates the thought well...
yes I own both games and have read the rules...
Il had to dig deep for this one...
