Go see a ship near you! I know I sort of posted this link in another thread, but I think everyone will appreciate this. It's a huge list of where you can go see historic ships!

 Ha, well I'm 21 alright?
It's a neat ship. Walking through a sub gives you an appreciation for what it would be like to be in it for months at a time.

Portland Oregon has the USS Blueback (SS 581).

It's not a WW2 sub ... but it was interesting to tour it nonetheless.
It's the "last non-nuclear, fast attack submarine"

I remember touring it thinking I would have died of concussions: I kept whacking my head on the low hatchways!

The Nautilus was great. I took a ferry tour around Norfolk. THAT was amazing. My father was at the back of the boat and he leans over and says. "We're being followed" and I look to where he is pointing to see the conning tour of a SUB! We told the captain/tour guide and he pointed it out to the passengers. It followed us for almost the whole tour.

We have a sub (The USS Silversides) about 3 hours away. I saw it a few years ago. And there's a U-boat (U-505) about 5 hours away. They re-did the exhibit and moved it inside and repainted it to look more historical. They had lots of 3-D displays to show some of the stuff. Very cool stuff. A few years ago, I saw the Constitution and the Destroyer behind her and the Salem (In Quincy?) (or was that the Quincy in Salem) and the Nautilus. All very cool. I was gonna go see the Intrepid in New York but it wasn't open on the day I was there. IN a couple weeks, I plan to go down to Dayton to see the Air Force Museum (again). No ships but still pretty cool.

Trout11 the North Carolina is located in Wilmington, North Carolina. I know cause I have seen it. I've seen the carrier Yorktown in Charleston, South Carolina. And the real treat is to see the battleship Alabama in Mobile, Alabama.
As a aside the BB Alabama was manuvered by tug boats to ride out those hurricanes that hit the area about two to three years ago.Didn't even get a scratch! She probably is one of the safest places to be during one of those things.

Dayton is GREAT! There is nothing like walking into a gigantic aviation museum with F-16s, A-10s, KC-135s just casually flying overhead. ("Fly casual" anyone? anyone?)

For anyone who can get to Central Texas (Austin/Dallas/Fort Worth), a short drive away in Fredericksburg is the Nimitz Museum. It has an amazing collection of items and information about the War in the Pacific.

Edit: They also have a really huge (and fun) Oktoberfest celebration in Fredericksburg!

I've been aboard CV-16 the LadyLex. That was a fun trip to Corpus Christi. It had been modified with a catapult launcher and had various aircraft on deck to look at.

My wife and I went to Hawaii for a couple of weeks. When we were there we went to see the "MIghty Mo" It was awesome. One strange thing, though, we saw a large group of Japanese tourists, behind ours. I asked our tour guide, if they get a lot of Japanese tourist visiting the USS Missouri. He said that they did, but they mostly come to see where the kamakazi hit the "Mighty Mo." The pilot was ejected from his plane and slid across the deck and hit some superstructure. The captain, gave the pilot a military burial, with full honors. The crew was pi**ed, but the captain told them that, the brave pilot gave his life for his country, and the least that they could do, was to honor that.

The USS ALABAMA saw 37 months of active duty during World War II, earning nine Battle Stars. The “Mighty A” as she came to be known, safely carried her crew throughout the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean campaigns, and never suffered any casualties or significant damage due to enemy fire. After the war, she was mothballed on Puget Sound at Bremerton, Wash., in 1947.
(from their website)
Funny thing is, I remember thinking the ship was in Alaska.... I guess they told us Washington was near Alaska or something. Anyway, children in Alabama raised money to bring the USS Alabama back home.
(again from the website - ) almost $100,000 in mostly nickels, dimes, and quarters was raised. Then some corporations added to that to fund what was they say is still the longest non Military tow in history.
It's very impressive to see in person, for real.

I saw Alabama when I was little on a trip to Florida. Didn't get to stop, just drove by it.
Saw the Midway a few summers back. There were 3 other CVNs in port at the time, it was a real treat.

Did you also take in HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose? They are fairly recent additions and VERY interesting. Across Spithead in Gosport there is a submarine museum with lots of cool stuff including at least three intact subs, and there is a WW1 Monitor moored right at the Fareham end of the Naval Base waiting to be refurbished.

I'll stick up for Sweeden by saying Visit the Vasa, its the coolest. The first line of battle ship ever built (or the best galleon ever built depending on your point of view).

I did. Warrior is from an unremarked and unremembered period of naval history. I was struck by how empty and open her main deck was.
The Mary Rose museum was also very interesting. I enjoyed the video where they show how they raised the half of the hull that is preserved.
For those not in the know, the Mary Rose was England's first purpose built all gun sail warship (no oars, and not depending on boarding party tactics or ramming). Old Henry the VIII was a bit too aggressive in loading up the guns and marines and shortly after she left the docks, she promptly rolled over and capsized, being too top heavy.
It was the ultimate "D'OH! Moment" of the Middle Ages. :D
