What's your favorite battleship in War at Sea? You can give your reason below, whatever that might be — playability, historical performance, or just a cool-looking mini.

Note: with only 10 poll options available, Kongo didn't make the list.

Richelieu, first one I drew, great cost effectiveness, can play on either side. Also, the battleships buff's on this board seem down on it so I figured I could help out French self-esteem.

A real toss up. I went with Scharnhorst even though it is really a BC. Purley went with it for game purposes.

Otherwise USS Iowa(Wisconsin) would have to be my choice. BTW I would take Kongo over Hood evertime due to the poor SA on Hood.

For play value, I gotta go with Yamato, it's just a monster, almost unsinkable and kills smaller ships like fly's with a swatter.

Personally, Warspite was a great ship with a long, distinguished career, USS Missouri, USS Washington, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau had good careers and were good ships but not really true battleships. All were great ships historically speaking.

BTW I would take Kongo over Hood evertime due to the poor SA on Hood.

Deciding which battleship to leave off the list was a judgment call. Even with all the criticism of Hood, I wouldn't be surprised to see it get a few votes here — mainly because of its historical importance and the quality of the model.

I have a bit of an American bias, so it was the Iowa....

Extended Range 5 and the best AA suite.

Given that in my most recent game my Iowa sank my brother's Yamato with one salvo fired at extended range, I pretty much had to go with the it. :D

Yamato is my ALL TIME favorite Battleship regardless of what game system i play it in.

It's the largest, most powerful Battleship ever built.

It had the biggest main guns 18.1 inch.

And for me it's a fine looking ship.

Scharnhorst. I love this piece.

If it was listed, I would have posted the Admiral Graf Spee, that little marvel. I sunk a Hood from 4 hexes away with it. It was a damn lucky roll: five 6's, plus 3 other successes. The Hood took the Graf Spee with it to see Davey Jones, but it was a good roll.

BTW, I know the Graf Spee is a Cruiser, but still a good piece.

Rodney. I love the British ships, and the Nelson class is probably my favourite British Battleship class. Sure, the q turret is funny, but it's still a good ship.

Anyway, it's no Iowa or Yamato, but I still like it.

For now? HMS Hood, she's got class. This will change only when HMS Warspite comes into service.

Actually, 18.1 inch guns had already been mounted during WWI on the battlecruiser-carrier HMS Furious and the monitors General Wolfe and Lord Clive, so Yamato comes in fourth in that regard.

Why would you put the HOOD as one of the options? That thing sucks.
My favorite is the Kongo, but it didn't make the list.
The Hood? Please!

Just for the record the Furious had an 18inch/40 mk1 while the Yamato had the 18inch/45 caliber.

Also the Furious's 18inch gun is an upscaled BL 15inch/42.

So that means the Yamato's 18inch/45's are bigger.

With only 10 poll options, something had to go. Judging from the results so far, perhaps Vittorio Veneto should have been the odd battleship out. Hood has gotten a few votes. And at least 2 posts mention Kongo as their favorite.

Cpt Miller-

Hood does not suck, you might want to re-think that. It's not the best battleship game wise but it's not the worst one either. It can hold it's own and if you houserule the SA, it's a good balanced ship. Not having Kongo on the poll was rather silly but just not enough room. Kongo is very useful and one of the best selling capital ships because you can easily use 2 of them in a fleet.

Hood is good if used appropriately. It is not designed to engage other battleships, thats what Truculents, Swordfish and the Rodney are for. Hood is for mopping up DDs, CA's, etc..

I picked the Richelieu - It has Torp Def and doesn't have slow - that gets rid of alot of ships right there. Its cost is low enough to have a balanced fleet but high enough to require the enemy to engage it. Range 5 and Excellent Spotting is just plain evil. It has a 3 range secondary attack. It's a 1940 unit and can play for either side. And 9 armor is better than than my other finalists - Bismarck and Washington.

What's bad - the 7 AA doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy.

To me size does matter.

Also the Furious's 18inch gun isn't a true 18inch gun in the first place.

And the Japanese were also working on an 18inch gun as well.

I did a 180 point game with a friend. I played the Hood, Exter, Ajax, Sydny, Canberra, 2x Javlins, and a Treluctant. Also 3 sword fish and a Hurricane. My opponet had the Yamoto, Shoso, Shoku, Myoto, and some other stuff. The Hood fought it out till the end of the game, when the Yamoto killed the Hood, the hard way, but the Yamoto only had 2 points left.

Its not that bad of a ship.

I think that if the poll was "Which battleship would you like to have another one of" then you might as well leave the Hood off. The Vit Vin is great to have two of and the Kongo absolutely SCREAMS for multiples but everyone CURSES when they pull a second Hood (or a third, or a fourth as it may be for some supremely unlucky souls). Just sayin.

Hood Missed it's update refit. The war started before it (refit) could be started.
Had Hood made it's refit, who knows. Hood was also a Battle Cruiser I believe, kinda like a bigger Scharnhorst.

You are indeed correct. The guns originally to be mounted on the Furious were 457mm, or 17.99 inches. The British simply referred to them as the BL 18 inch / 40 Naval Gun because of the near similarity. While 17.99 is indeed close to 18 inches, it still doesn't quite make the 18 inch cut.

After playing a game last night, I might be getting more partial towards the Washington. It's a Barb less than the Iowa and almost as deadly.

All are good, the Yamato is best IMO, Richelieu a close second, Scharnhorst also excellent. But I voted Hood. SUCH a beautiful model, such a magnificent vessel, such a gallant and [in the completely literal sense] tragic end, how as a Brit could I possibly vote otherwise?

Bigblue2

Yamato. Its the best looking (Iowa looks awful), its tough and second would have to go to the Bismark. Also good looking.

I don't really know, for raw power I like the Iowa, but the Washington is just so much more portable as a mini. Besides, it's a whole lot easier to throw together a desktop-size 2nd Guadalcanal scenario than most of Iowa's battles...

I went with Rodney, but both Hood and Washington were right up there.

Hood is a wonderful scuplt with a tragic story. Washington and Rodney both sunk battleships and lived to see the scrapyard.

Richelieu, without question.

All guns forward, precluding the need to turn broadside to fire all batteries (and make your ship more vulnerable, apparently).

And all the advantages listed by others.

But the real reason is that "when I was sick and lay abed" -- Robert Louis Stevenson, "Land of Counterpane" -- at the age of 8 with near-fatal bronchitis/pneumonia -- the nice ladies at the Rock Island (Illinois) Public Library actually let my mom check out the 1950(?) Jane's Fighting Ships, and my without-question favorite ship was Richelieu. How I wanted Aurora or Revell to come out with a 1:600 or 1:570 Richelieu -- to no avail! :(

Later, in 1968, when I was stationed in Germany, I picked up an excellent -- and not so little -- 1:1250 Delphin metal model of Richelieu which I treasure to this day.

And the Axis & Allies 1:1800 model of Richelieu is just superb. :)

I voted Yamato because it's huge and the model is well done. I also like the Japanese color scheme.
Yamato happens to be the only duplicate rare I have, I love fielding a fleet consisting of both Yamato and Musashi, the two giants.
