Half a company of Romanian Frontier Guards supported by a cavalry squadron from the 1st Rosiori Regiment plunged into the Ukraine. Expecting heavy Russian resistance, Army Group South detailed some self-propelled artillery to accompany them and put a nearby panzer battalion on notice.

Romanians:

Frontier Guard x5 30 pts
1st Rosiori x3 12 pts
ZBm 1930 (LMG) x2 6 pts

Germans:

2x SiG33 30 pts
1x Wuhrframen 41 17 pts
1x Flakpanzer I 12 pts

Near Hill 107, they encountered Russian troops moving to occupy the local high ground.

Russians:

7x Mosin 21 pts
5x DP-27 20 pts
2x Commissar 10 pts
1x Hero 8 pts
2x PM-40 50mm (Mortar) 8 pts
1x PTRS-41 (ATR) 6 pts
1x M1910 Maxim 8 pts
1x 85mm M1939 (AA) 16 pts
1x Minefield 2 pts
1x Tank Obstacle 1 pt

The Russians put their heavy weapons on a hill overlooking the objective while the infantry swept forward. The Romanians spread out. The cavalry, supported by the Flakpanzer, demonstrated against the Russian right wing. The infantry moved towards the objective with the SiGs looking for firing positions hidden from the 85mm. Meanwhile, the Wuhrframen took its deadly load of rockets to the Axis right wing.

The second turn proved decisive. Just as the Russians were poised to make a decisive push onto the hills near the objective, the Wuhrframen moved into firing position. The Russians dispersed like roaches when the light comes on. The rocket salvo was singularly ineffective, but the Russian momentum disappeared. The ZBm 1937 riddled the Russian AA gun while the cavalry pinned the ATR and mortars by threatening to charge. The Flakpanzer completely circled the Russian flank and moved into position behind the infantry. The SiGs started picking off the opposing infantry.

The next turn saw things go from bad to worse for the home team. The Romanian infantry had occupied good positions and poured fire into the disorganized Communists. Cavalry swept over the Russian heavy weapons while the SPA blasted Russian infantry in cover.

The last chance for the Russians arrived in the form of a BT-7 and a T-26 on turn 4. The Germans countered with a PzIIIF and a PzIVC. While the Russians managed to knock out the Flakpanzer after a less than astute maneuver, the rest of their infantry succumbed to the intense fire from the Romanian Frontier Guards.

As the German vehicles maneuvered to surround the Russians, the Red armor retreated.

Romanian losses were very light and Hitler's allies moved toward the city of Odessa.

Homemade historical units. Frontier Guards were elite infantry, like the WVI in AAM. 1st Rosiori Regt were cavalry. Ardent Capitan (Captain in Romanian) is another leader we made. A Wuhrframen is an APC with Nebelwerfer-like rockets. The others are marked.
