Its quite hard to do a poll on this since there is such a vast number of games, from video games, pen and paper, collectable miniatures, to board games.
There are quite a few who praise W.A.S. as a game from the divine. And others who think this game is a down right disgrace. And then there are those who are in between all that. But that goes for every game made. You have the lovers and the haters. And you can't do nothin' about that.
I will assume the majority who do not find W.A.S. up to their expectations due to what they are use to and there tastes of years of gaming.
And those who love the game admire because it is quick, simple and out of the box. In addition for some it is familiar with their gaming tastes such as hero cliks, magic, D N' D miniatures, etc. But there are several who are big time war gamers of the past who still enjoy this game for what is.
I think if we tell others what games we have played and enjoyed (or did not enjoy) Than we have a better understanding why one someone may react to certain gaming rules, whether it is for simplicity crowd, or the historic crowd.
My gaming:
Magic: The Gathering- (enjoyed it for a long time then it became repetitive, then the majority of players became jerks. :( )
Mech Warrior- Lasted about 4 months then got sick of it. Rules just seemed to scattered.
Pirates CMG- Love this game. The only real down side is the miniatures. Having ships break left and right is never fun. Cute little dice though. I could go without the seamonsters, but those or always an option in a game. Either way, its fast, and fun, more importantly easy.
At-43- Great pre-painted miniatures. Only problem is there may have been some problems when the company translated the rules from French to English. There a lot of rules problems
WarHammer- I hate painting a whole freaking army before I have to play. 'nuff said.
Risk- Always a fun game IMHO
Classic A and A- Another fun one.
Horror clix- Wizkids F'd this game up from the star.
Flames of War- Great mechanics, but I have always believed to many rules can destroy a game. There is a rule for every thing. And there are some cases where you have to be able to argue a rule to prove your point. I choose not to play lawyer. :)
never touched hero clix, D N' D, or starwars. Not my thing.
As you can see I like simple games mostly. When they get dull I leave.
there are few other games but I can't remember there names or I am too lazy. Or a combination of both.

My gaming:
Star Wars Minis - Fun game but waaaay too many super rare figures to get. How many Darth Vaders can they come out with!
Star Wars StarShip Battles - Really fun game. I hope they come out with more ships.
Pirates - Really fun game. Yeah I hate that the ships break easily. Not crazy about all the new seamonsters either.
Rocketmen - Fun game but too bad it was cancelled after 2 sets.
Close Action - Great Napolianic fighting sail game.
Star Fleet Battles - Really fun game. There are a ton of rules but you only need to know a few in order to play. You can make it as difficult or as easy as you like.

I wouldnt even be able to be begin to list them all. ;) I've been gaming for over 30 years and have a huge collection of games dating back from about 1974.
When I was younger, I used to play a lot more of the hex and counter wargames but as I've gotten older and time is shorter I tend to prefer games that are a little cleaner and play faster.

I'm a hex-and-counter wargamer and I play only a few games. WAS is the first collectible miniature games I've bought into. I'm doing some Battlefield: Evolution with borrowed miniatures.
I have played Warhammer 40K. Stopped due to time and tired of GW changing the rules in order to make money. Modern warfare is my prevalent interest and I've gotten heavily into microarmor using Cold War Commander and Fistful of Tows 2 rule sets. Definitely not "pick up and play" wargaming.
I like well-designed game systems with consistent detail. One of my all-time personal favorites is the Renegade Legion SF series of hex board wargames from the early 90s.
I collect games rather than play them. I have several Avalon Hill titles as well as a ton of SPI and Victory Games titles. My interest is to built standalone computer games around them so I can play them. And I'm an information junkie so the research that comes out of the interest generally pays for itself in knowledge.

I started gaming when Avalon Hill published Gettysburg (1958?) After years of boardgaming, I got started with miniatures in the 1970s and never looked back. The only collectible games I play are WaS and Mechwarrior but I also play:
WWII Naval
General Quarters 2 and 3
Battlestations! Battlestations!
Command At Sea (when I can blackmail some into it)
WWII Land
Flames of War
Command Decision 3 (just got the new edition but haven't been able to try it out yet)
Blitzkrieg Commander
WWII Air
Bag The Hun
Knight's Cross
WWI Air
Blue Max/Canvas Eagles
WWI Naval
Grand Fleets
Jutland (A&A's minatures rules, not the boardgame)
Predreadnought Naval
Damn BattleShips Again (DBSA)
ACW
Fire and Fury
18th Century
Age of Honor
Warfare in the Age of Reason
Ancient and Medieval
Warhammer Ancient Battles
Day of Battle
Ironbow (just getting started)
Shattered Lances (just getting started)
Space Combat
Battlefleet Gothic
Silent Death
Lightning Strike
SciFi Ground Combat
Heavy Gear
Of course, I own a couple of hundred rulesets I haven't gotten around to trying yet, a few hundred more I've either stopped playing or just drag out every now and then, and I'm sure a few I've just plain forgotten about :D

I've been gaming as long as Uncle Joe. My favorites are Russian Campaign and Fire in the East. At work, we have a Wooden Ships & Iron Men campaign going.
My favorite rules are General Quarters for WWII naval. We modified them for the different guns used by different nations and converted to 3" hexes, using 1:2400 scale models. We also modified the torpedo rules. That was back in the late 1970's. It's easy to learn and plays fast without the incessant dice rolling of some other games.
These days, we play Puerto Rico, Settlers of Cataan, Sword of the Samurai (Shogun), or anything that someone brings. We have a 100 member game club at work, so we get a nice variety on our monthly game day.

AnA (Land and Sea)
Warhammer 40k (Games Workshop is to tolitarian but they make a great game)
Pirates (only wish it was more combat less island hopping)
Star Wars (Land and in Space)
Battlefield Evolution (want more pieces but otherwise ausome game)
Mechwarrior (fine game but ultimantly cheesy)
probably some others in there that are in my reserve battalions;)

I've got a long list but what I've been playing recently includes the following:
Mini Games:
Pirates!- my current favorite only due to my custom table and islands.
Starship Battles- don't care for the other SW mini's but I dig the ships.
WAS: obviously.
Board Games:
Risk, Puerto Rico, A&A Classic, Monopoly, War of the Ring.
I actually enjoy painting some mini's just not in mass quantities. I tried warhammer, enjoyed the mini's but disliked the game.
If anyone know's of any good age of sail mini games lemme know. I can't seem to find any on the internet.

I have been thinking about battle field: evolution. Only a few things holding me back. Modern is not my fav. area, but still interesting. Not enough minis or factions, but that should change in time. More importantly, no players. :p

I played Seapower (Alnavco) eons ago when I was a teenager.
My son is the gamer and I got started again with him about three years ago.
We really started with Mechwarrior about 3 years ago. Now I am a Battlemaster just to keep the game going locally.
We recently tried Starship Troopers, but it takes too long to make enough minis to play (and I was an avid modeler in my youth), and the rules were too complex for my son.
Now hooked on War At Sea, but we still play Mechwarrior twice a month.

As far as mini-games go, I'll try anything once. However I heavily buy into:
Axis and Allies Minis
War at Sea
I have bought:
Mageknight: We still have a die hard community at my gaming store
Pirates: Enough to decide that captains were cheap and overpowered
Just about any kind of computer game.
Other than that I'll play just about anything you put in front of me.

Hmm, let's see. . .
Used to play a lot of Starfleet Battles, but it was a game that really was designed to be a computer game (plus it was hard to find players and time to have a game) so eventually I switched over to the Starfleet Command computer game. Same with Harpoon. Also used to play a lot of Axis & Allies and Risk but haven't in ages.
Games I currently play are Warhammer 40K (I play Imperial Guard), and Battlefleet Gothic (best game ever made by GW), as well as Warhammer Fantasy (Ogres). I also play a fan-made variant of 40K using 1:100 scale Mobile Suit Gundam models which I think is a blast.
Outside of the money grubbing clutches of Games Workshop I play a lot of Twilight Imperium (MOO2 tabletop basically - and one of the best boardgames ever), as well as the Legend of the Five Rings CCG (not much of that, but I do like the game). I still have my old Magic deck sitting around (blue), but I stopped collecting at Ice Age and apart from a game just yesterday I haven't played in ten years.
Also I used to play a lot of tabletop RPGs but our group broke up three years ago when we all moved and I haven't re-assembled another one yet. Good RPG groups are hard to build. We played some 2nd Ed AD&D, then moved on to Cyberpunk 2020, and some Traveller. For a few years we also played various fantasy games (the longest was set in the Wheel of Time universe) using a system I created that the players came to call EGR (Eif's Generic Rules).
But we played White Wolf's World of Darkness mostly, focussed on Mage: The Ascension, which was by far my favourite game system. We had a Technocracy campaign that ran for three years. The party was a psycopathic Iteration X cyborg with a behaviour chip in his head, a Syndicate Financier who'd had his bank stolen by a Vampire Elder, a young Progenitor Pharmacopaeist who snorted a bit too much fairy dust during university, a Void Engineer replicant clone of a legendary space explorer, all lead by a Native American Man in Black whose people saw him as a sellout, and whose Avatar really wanted him to be a Dreamspeaker. A total band of deviants in other words. Was a blast. :D
I also run my own online RPG Lords of Ether which is a sort of cross-genre spelljammer type universe where the players run entire planets, though it's currently on hiatus due to lack of time to run it and creative burnout.

I can't even think of where to begin.....how about the beginning. I started playing Red Box DnD in the 7th Grade back in like 1982. I still play though I much preferred the Advanced DnD rules over all other versions. From there I just could not stop. I play every genre, card, board, mini, rpg, strategy, computer, etc. I have a collection of about 400 games from all these genres and I am an amatuer game designer. (I have made a dozen games, some pretty fun actually) I think I have more money invested in games in all their forms that I could easily buy a brand new Harley if I sold them all. My two most prized collectible games are Version one Space Hulk and the original version of Shogun. I want an original version of Fury of Dracula and the Milton Bradley Mastrer Series game Broadsides and Boarding Parties. Games I totally love; BANG!, Munchkin, DOOM The Boardgame, OGRE, Formula De, Zombies. Games I love collecting: A&A MInis and A&A Naval. Games I used to collect alot! Sabertooths Lord Of The Rings Collectible Strategy Game, Star Wars Minis, Hero Clix, POTSM, and Mech Warrior Dark Age. The Last Card Game I played.....LOTR, games I have bought but not played...lol....Warcraft! :D My favorite card game of all time....Spellfire! I love that game. And of course like many of you know I love to paint and mod and build. I am currently painting all the minis in my BattleLore game, and I just finished building a Middle East town for my wargames. Ok...ok....lemme stop or I could go on forever.
