Ok, I've griped, now I praise!
DDay is awesome. My first game went down to the wire. It is possible, but from what I've been reading about from the first game reports, I don't think players are going to be throwing in the towel by turn 5.
The game flows well with historical attention payed to the beaches, then the French countryside, and finally climaxing in pitched battles for the VCs.

Nothing seems too over or underpowering. Yeah, blockhouse units could shoot blanks and watch the invaders stream ashore, or they help eat your reinforcements for lunch. The same with fighters. Some times they will wipe out divisions of reinforcements, and on other occasions act like they are at a parade and watch the columns of enemy troops pour into the raging battles.
I love the randomness of it all.

I do have to admit that my earlier fears of the map spaces not having enough rooom to accommodate all of the units proved unfounded.
Oh well, even a prophet can't be right all of the time. :D

Yes- I agree! Our second game...Allies actually won! The German Blockhouses were being bombarded like crazy! (sucks to be the ones inside!)-lol :D

The Germans had 2 more turns to "hold" off the Allied forces- it wasn't going to happen! The Allies were overpowering (thanks to many 'Fortune' cards!)...Eventually on turn 9-The Axis had run out of ammo (and units!)-WOW!
Been even Steven here- 1 victory for Germans and 1 for the Allies! (I really like the balance to this one- NO GRIPES about that here!)

I can't say enough- the gameplay is very 'stream-lined': we actually finished our 2nd game in just under 2 1/2 hrs! (not bad!) ;)

[Can't wait for our next endeaver!]

2 games, 4 hours, I love this game! :D

Allies won each time in round 9 nailbiter.

Halfadime as Allies destroyed my German forces in Round 9, and I as the Allies needed until round 10 to kill his last unit, but there was no way for him to recapture a city.

Halfadime is lethal with naval bombardment(as Allies) but can't hit the sky with AA(as Axis)! :D

I have to overwhelming forces to balance incredibly lousy die rolling.

Did I mention I love this game? ;)

4 1/2 smiles out of 5...!!

the minus 1/2 is outlined on the gripe / got d-day today thread...

one of the best parts for us, is to read mikes articles while playing, it outlines great insight and complements the rule book nicely...most all of our questions where answered in the articles...nice touch...!!

praise here as well...and my girl loves it!! should see her face as she kills me!! ah the newbie dice!! gotta love it...nothing like 3 airborn hits and 5 out of 6 bombardement!! OUCH!!

D-DAY HAS ARRIVED! YES!! smile.gif Have read through the manual and set up things and might be able to squeeze in a game tonite,
but here is my quick opinion of what I have seen
so far component-wise:

1. Game Pieces -- Yep, missing the same as others
it seems (1 Ger tank missing but w/ extra INF, 1 Brit INF missing, US forces ok). All other parts including cards complete. Not a big deal since game losses will easily replace these. The US and Ger colors are nice as mentioned, but the big suprise was how cool the brits look in the new creme/beige color. Love them!! :D Reminds me of the UK color of the counters in another Avalon Hill game on this topic -- The Longest Day (TLD). tongue.gif Well done.

2. Playing charts are a bit thin but not a big problem. Font size on *all* things (cards included) is a bit too small for old farts like me given that more room was available for bigger print size, but they look nice.

3. Game cards are of nice quality. Not quite up to nice 52-deck standard playing-card quality, but certainly fine. I like the way the order cards are bascially a "sequence of play" thing. Will be great for newbies, and a great touch to add this "play sequence" to the battlecard.

4. Game manual looks great and is very clearly
written.

5. Mapboard -- as most have seen -- looks great!
Nice idea on printing the Ger icon setup on the map -- just like TLD. smile.gif

6. Airfields a tad too small to fit all the units on, and US airfield has the wrong fighter icon depiction, but not a big deal. Beach landing boxes also could also be a bit bigger, but are doable.

7. Although it does not have real storage trays as already mentioned, this is not as big a deal to me as with other A&A games. Why? All pieces are set-up before play so you won't be digging in or back into tray all that much, so not
that bad.

8. All the advanced rules are in the form of fortune and tactic cards you add to the standard order card deck. Nice design touch.

So despite some of my minor whinning and quibbles smile.gif I have to say that overall this game is an excellent value for the money component and rule-wise!

Yup - I love this game too! And, I haven't even experimented with the other two decks of cards yet. This is a awesome game, great mechanics, nice time frame (2-2.5 hours) with great attention to historical detail. Plus, you can mix it up with the cards based on the experience level of players or the mood you are in.

I even started watching Band of Brothers again to commence the debut of this game......I absolutely love that mini series.

Mike and Larry - what can we look foward towards getting next? And thanks for putting out an awesome game, you guys really hit a home run with A&A: D-Day :D
