Did you guys switch sides? Or play the same side every game? Just wondering since the Japanese side lost 14 times out of 15. We played #10 twice, switched sides and re-picked the navies. The Japanese lost twice.

No, we played the same sides each game as we were using our own fleets.

I admit, after playing the game 15 times, it got somewhat repetative and predictable. My opponent only had enough points to (just) field the same fleet each time:
1 Kongo
1 Jintsu
1 Sub-Chaser
1 I-19
2 Kates

Meanwhile, I had (a little) more selection:
2 Rodney's (yeah, not much luck there....no points to field 2 unfortunately)
1 Richelieu
2 Gloire's
1 Ajax
1 Exeter
6 le Terribles
2 Swordfish (Didn't take them often due to the rule in the scenario about lossing planes if no carrier present)
1 Hurricane (see above reasoning)

Basicly, at the size of the game, it came down to sinking the battleship. If he sunk the battleship, he won. If I got it off...I won. Made it very predictable and reptative, especially with (more or less) the same forces each time.

Realisticly, we *could* have swaped sides. I do have a Japanese Fleet:

1 Tone
1 I-19
1 Sub-Chaser
2 Zekes
1 Val

However, my opponent has no British/French Fleet and would have had to borrow mine. The idea didn't appeal to him, so, we kept the same sides.

I tried the scenario myself also, and by playing alone I made sure both admirals were equally matched (how's that for translating, having to few friends that play WAS:p ). I also reached an Allied victory with Hood saling happilly off the other end.

Making sure you got movement 2 (and no Slow SA), gives the opponent just 5 turns to finish off more than half your fleet. Since this game does not allow a physical blockade, enemy ships can sail through even the most dense fleet.

I think the key lies in crippling the enemy first, to increase the number of sailing turns needed, and then finish him off.

Like Walgers, I played this scenario solo. The Allies won (barely). I rolled the Command Decisions randomly, and came up with the reinforcements. This is how the fleets looked:

The Vals did a number on the Javelins and the Gloire, but couldn't land a hit on the Hood (but the Gloire destroyed one Val squadron). The Zeke shot down the PBY (because I was stupid and left it unescorted, and the Zeke rolled a Yahtzee of 6s). Hood and Kongo traded shots for three turns; Hood landed three hits on Kongo, while Kongo only got one hit on Hood. On the Kongo's hit, one of the dice got stuck in my hand as I rolled, and then spun around for a while before stopping. There were three 6s among the rest of the dice, and the final die eventually came down on a . . . 5! Hood sailed away, her crew giving the Kongo the "V" for victory sign (or maybe another well-known British two-fingered salute; it's hard to tell at that scale....).

Meanwhile, Ajax and Exeter took out one of the Yukikazes fairly quickly. My horrible luck with torpedo rolls continued, as the Japanese couldn't get a torpedo anywhere near the Brits. After losing Hood, Kongo turned her attention on the cruisers. The Vals and one volley from Kongo crippled Ajax. I left Ajax to the Vals, and Kongo conentrated her fire on Exeter. The Vals suddenly lost their targeting ability, missing Ajax completely. Kongo landed hits with her primary, secondary, and tertiary batteries on Exeter (the primary battery exceeding Exeter's Vital Armor). Exeter's SA saved her three times in a row (I think I did that right; if not, oh well, it's only a game). The two crippled cruisers limped off the board the next turn, accompanied by more two-fingered salutes.

The battle would have turned out much differently if the Japanese had rolled better. Seriously, in one of Kongo's shots at Hood, I rolled nothing higher than a 3 (and only two of those). I definitely need new dice....

I played this battle solitare also. My report is in a seperate thread. I also discovered that the escaping ships needed to be crippled first. One Javelin and then another had been crippled, but the big ships were safe. The Hood and Sydney sailed together. The Japanese planes concentrated on the Hood, but failed to score enough hits. In hindsight, the Japanese should have concentrated on the Sydney.
