German field command had been warned of an ammo build up by the Russians. Earlier a detachement of recon vechiles supported by a sIG and some panzergrenadiers had gone in a search to the south of this position.
For a brief while a white plume of smoke waffed on the horizon. Lack of radio contact told the tale that the Recon team had found something. Something they could not handle. Looks like Stalin was making a push.
Field OberLt Girsch would be ready. With his 2 Panzer III's, a sIG-33, an attached Romania Turan who had become seperated from his unit and his remaining infantry (2 SS PG, 1 Vet Inf, 1 hero) the LT quickly prepared his defenses in his command SD KFZ-250.
Hidden from view, he saw 2 Bofors AA guns get pushed into position. Too far a shot to risk; he'd call up longer range guns later. The fastest reserves were just 10minutes away and on the way.
Then he saw a T-34/76 rumble into view. His heart sank. He new something spectacular was needed to take that beast out. 2 Commisars appeared in a split assualt formation. Pistols in hand they pushed their Mosin and heavy assualt guns forward. He had read reports of the gun designed after the US WWI B.A.R. He knew what kind of fear it provoked in the most resolute of men.
The Soviets advanced. He saw a Katyusha set up out of sight in a town 1 Km away. Then the idea hit. He swung his troops into action.
A PNZR III puffed smoke to block LOS from the Bofors. His sIG moved to fire upon the Northern arm of the 2 prong assualt. His two remaingin tanks rumbled south of the woodlands to fire upong the hapless Soviets. His command driver was good. Rushing forward and driving like Groom dancing on wedding day, the LT was dropped just 50m from the rear of now halted T-34/76. He had his command sergent with him. A True German Hero from the Polish war and France.
His driver and gun barely came to stop before they were off again into the town where the Katyusha had last been seen.
His gambit to kill the T-34/76 failed. His Panzerfaust roudn was a dud. Hitting square on the rear, it failed to detonate (a series of 1's, 2's and 3's on the 10 dice: 2 successes total). His Hero shot the tank comander but not mortally.
His sIG opened up and killed two squads of Mosin just as they had entered the woods. His tanks wiping out a third Mosin. Counter fire rained down on his units but they seemed untouched. Just then a Sniper round hit him in the shoulder. A mortal wound for sure if his men couldn't reach to staunch the blood flow. 2 Minutes into the battle and the LT passed out from his wound.
When he awoke 8 minutes later he was in his command car again.
The SD KFZ-250 initally only disrupted the Kat as she set up to fire a barrage. The Kat's crew drove it away leaving half its rockets behind. A barrage was loosed a minute or two later raining steel on the tanks who had closed on the Leaderless t-34/76. All the Barrage managed to do was kill the Sniper who had shot him in the opening minutes of the battle.
2 Commisars had been captured as well as a reenforment Sniper and 2 Bofors. Their crews quit when the Motorcycle Infantry showed up: the Reinforcements had come.
His three tanks were all damaged but still able to move and fight. A few days of TLC and these tanks would be fit for combat. The T-34/76 went down to a succession of fire. No 1 round doing critical damage, the Crew insde was shredded none the less.
His sIg-33 fire turned the battle. It took out 3 Mosins and Gunner. Counter fire towards it bounced happlessly off its light shield.
He had been wounded and incapciated for most of the battle. His Veteran Hero had gone down shortly after hitting the enemy tank commander. 1 man lost.
The Soviets lost their T-34/76. 2 Snipers. 4 Mosins. 1 Heavy Gunner. 1 of Stalins Organ: the Katyusha. They had 2 Commisars, 2 Bofors and 1 heavy gunner captured. 1 Bofors and 1 Sniper who arrived 8 minutes into the fight slipped away.
Germany stopped the 100pt offensive. total Losses: 1 WOLt & 1 Hero
