Continued naval portion of campaign; http://boards.avalonhill.com/showthread.php?t=20854 First battle and rules as above. Assuming Japan won the land battle takes us to battle 5.
A fairly equal set-up of forces meets with limited time ( 4 turns) and victory decided by damage and bonus for damage caused to CVs.
Turn 1. Japan inititive,US moves fleet forword within cap coverage formation. IJN fleet follows suit. Air placement ended up with the Soru being attacked by 2 Devastator and 2 Dauntless, the Tennesee being attacked by 2 Kate and a Val. The anti-air from Tennesee and Fletcher both abort Kates! Amazing, but wait, both Wildcats miss the single Val coming down from above!
The dive-bomber rolls 11 dice with bonuses from Shokaku and a Tone SA. The roll,,,,,,, 12 hits, 2 off a vital so 1 point of damage. The deadly no extended range hit. Meanwhile over the Soru,,Not much the aa can do here as the torp, bombers abort and dive-bomber screams in ( familar) 10 hits and scratch one flattop! The cv based Zero saves so on we go.
Turn 2. Japan initive, Fleets move with damaged US BB staying out of extended range for now. Air strikes are against the Yorktown and Shokaku which allied pilots admit they had thought they had attacked last time. The baby flattop did not give any bonus points! anti-air, Yorktown and a Wildcat both shoot down their respective targets, splash 2 Val. leaving 2 Kates coming in low, 6 dice total, 2 HITS! No lucky roll for the big ship as only saves vs vital armor hit so she is a goner. Meanwhile the Shokaku and Tone abort both their targets and a Zero sends one home as well . No damage here.
Turn 3. US initive, Japan moves carriers away and moves up BB and a tone so allied fleet pulls back and launches vs the BB. Japan went for 2nd CV. The results here were a point vs the Kongo and a kate shot down.
At this point both fleets dis-engaged to their respective ports.
US fleet- Lost one CV, 1 group of dive-bombers. Japan lost one CVL , 2 groups dive-bombers and one group of kates.
USN 42 points-IJN 38 + 50 bonus= 88 points
A victory for Japan as long as they can replace those aircrews?
