View Full Version : Yamato's weakness

The Yamato has been sunk by aircraft, as far as i know by torpedoplanes.
I have done two 200pnt games involving two yamatos, three zeros, and three I-19.
I designed two anti yamato fleets, one with masive airpower of british and american forces and a destroyer-heavy fleet, both being far above the printed 15 max models (but I believe that is a quideline for 100 pnt fleets).
Both times the allied won. Mainly because of luck. Against the air fleet, one yamato, which would have gotten an objective at the end of that turn, got torpedoed by four swordfish (none got abandoned, plus one additional die due to the Ark-Royal's SA). 13 dice resulted in 6 6's. Sunk in one attack.
In the other game it is also the shear number of torpedo attacks. Four barbs, a lot of destroyers and some cruisers. Just to many dice rolls to get enough 6's. By the way, against this IJN fleet, you only need to sink one yamato. Then capture two objectives (which in relation to the 100 pnt games are in a 200 pnt worth 100) and sink his subs. Thatway you reach the predetermined goal of 300.
Though I think a general fleet has far more trouble against two Yamatos. They are just too tough.

Are you trying to make me feel bad? :) Kaz' Yamato has been impervious to all but two torpedo attacks.

Sounds like you would want to change your fleet up to be better prepared for torpedo attacks.
The 200 pt. fleet I fielded earlier today only used one Yamato but I would use that fleet again in a heartbeat.

I played a 200 pt game last night with a Yamato involved and it proved to be a beast and won the game for IJN.

I find it humorous that two people with German ship names are both boasting of their victories with the IJN.

Most battle wagons fall easy to torpedos (at least from my games) Even ones with torp. defense. Even though they are heavy hitters and have high defense, they still need protection from fighters and/or other ships to help with a wave of anti-air to prevent that death from above. Now if you have subs around you, you now have another problem. :p

Yamato freakin' rules. No other ship really out does it single handedly. The only one that really has a chance is the Iowa, otherwise, the Yamato will rampage around. There have been SO many times my opponent was absolutely certain he could do damage to my yamato with massive battleship attacks only to find they roll 9 hits. I can't help but laugh.
The Yamato only has problems with torpedoes, but those are EASILY overcame (especially if you're going up agianst *cough* swordfish... their defense is horrible).
Run an Akagi and two shohos with the yamato and I-19s to deal with subs. Trick the carriers out with Zekes and you're good to go. Whatever is left have a tone and a support ship.

Admiral Yamato has an invitation any day of the week to get whipped like the family pig by my Iowa and my air force. ;)

Historicaly the Yamato was sank by about 400 allied aircraft, no ships involved.

I know what scene you are talking about, it is from Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back, when the Imperial Fleet is looking for the Millenium Falcon after the fiasco on Hoth. haha
But in this case, nah! we're talking the Kriegsmarine.
I have a lot of respect for those guys because of what they did with the few ships they had. Also German gunnery was top notch compared with other European fleets of the time, yes even the Royal Navy.
So yes, deploy the fleet! :D

Battleships can bite away hull points, often one at a time, but I found far to often to have rolled 9 in stead of 10, thus not damaging it.
