Someone else (Kommandant, I believe it was) mentioned that they had bought a complete set of commons to start their collection, and it got me thinking...

What are the best Common surface ships? What fleets would I field if I had nothing but Commons in my arsenal? What if I had UnCommon ships as well, but still no rares?

My first thought is of the Karl Galster. If I have to field a pure-commons fleet, that's the first ship that comes to mind as being my core.

For a 100-point All-Common Axis fleet, I flipped through the units and was shocked to see that it was impossible for me to field any Cruisers... The best I could hope for was a destroyer swarm...

3x Luca Tarigo (24 pts)
3x Karl Galster (24 pts)
2x U510 (22 pts)
4x Stuka (28 pts)

The Allies have marginally better options across the board in airpower, but no one Common surface ship that I could point to as a core. I decided that I'd have to field a similar swarm fleet, but with slightly more potent air support.

3x Javelin (27 pts)
3x Fletcher (21 pts)
3x Truculent (24 pts)
4x Wildcat (28 pts)

For UnCommons, I realized that my surface options expanded greatly. There were a ton of decent cruisers available at that point cost, and even the Boise, who I often ignore, looks potent in that company. I decided for the allies, I'd field it as the core of a 100-point fleet. I'd match the Boise with the anti-air standby of an Atlanta to protect at least one, and field a mix of subs and aircraft to round out the bases...

2x Boise (26 pts)
2x Atlanta (24 pts)
1x Barb (12 pts)
1x Dauntless (13 pts)
2x Devestator (18 pts)
1x Wildcat (7 pts)
100 total

For the Axis side, I still saw little I could do with the Japanese unless I fielded a Shoho... and even then, I was doubtful that I could field a competitive fleet with only the Jintsu and Yukikaze as my core ships. Again, I looked to the Italian-German connection. The best of the bunch appeared to be the speedy Koln and the sturdy, if fairly unremarkable, Duca D'Aosta. I also had at my disposal the surprisingly durable Nordmark. I had some tough decisions to make...

2x Koln (22 pts)
1x Duca D'Aosta (12 pts)
1x Nordmark (5 pts)
1x Karl Galster (8 pts)
5x Kondor (30 pts)
2x U510 (22 pts)
99 pts

I'm curious as to what other people would come up with as builds under these scenarios...

More subs and planes. Go for a "Denial Fleet".
