Never had as much pleasure from a wargame in years, and even my non-wargaming son likes it!

My biggest complaints are the stupidity of claiming patches of water for a 10 minute period as "objectives", and the senseless charge to the center that results. Along with that there is the occasional dance of the battleships resulting from range 5 BB's.

I like the game alot (or that may just be me telling myself that to rationalize the $400.00+ smackers I've already spent on it... :D ), but I've gotten lost in the experimental rules. My biggest snag has been the fragility of DDs & CAs in your standard 100 point games.
Instead of "circling in a holding pattern" and waiting for what the experimental rules come up with, I've actually decided to go ahead and "land", shut dowm all the engines, and wait for "take-off" clearance (Clearance Clarence...:D ) from the finalized experimental rules.
I also think some more official scenarios for this game would be nice. At the moment, I would still rate General Quarters as the best naval mini rules out there. WaS is running a very close second, and my hope is that it will nose ahead into first place with some rules tweaks!
Waiting for "take-off" instructions from the tower, in Columbus...

My reply doesn't exactly fit any choices. I have the game and have played a little but there is no one else in my area to play with. So I fall into the next to last but answer does not depend on experimental rules.

I like the game as is. Light, easy game.
Ditto on Kaufsticks avatar!

I'm just curious as to how people currently view this game as of present. What say ye?
P.S.-That was supposed to be "on a regular basis" in option #2. I get so used to being able to go back and edit out my typo's, and you can't do that in the poll questions. Doh!
I'm really offended that you don't have a poll option for using the Joisey House Rules! :p
Not to brag or anything, but alot of people are using them, or a variant thereof. :p

I can't keep up with all the experimental, optional, cure-all, fixes this, fixes that rules, sorry about missing your's Joisey! I'm sure they are good!
I'm quite sad to say that I'm very near the point of closing the books on this one myself.:( Less than half the people responding to the poll are using the original rules so far...that ain't a good sign.

I wouldn't let that bother you. The game, out of the box is not bad, it's playable for sure and fun but in many instances you find yourself asking why something is the way it is and you want to change it for the better of the game.
Richard Baker has said this himself and I see the game going forward with a new rulebook and much improved game play. This should not change any of the models or their cards(I hope) and that is fine by me. What's important is that they are listening and doing their best to get it right so set II should be really, really good. Hang in there and Joisey's House Rules are real easy to follow. You can simply print them and use them in your games and I GUARANTEE, you will like it a lot better and so will your friends.

Yeah, you are right on this, and I know it. I guess I'm just in a rut with the rules as they are and the experimental rules jumping around with constant little changes here and there.
I'm one of those people who want to be playing by a common set of rules that everyone is using as well, so I really tend to stay away from the unofficial house rules if there is the hope of official rules to follow.
I guess I'm just sweating out the wait for the "tweaks" to the rules...

Keep in mind this board is made up of a very self-selected group of mostly avid WaS fans. We are all really into the game and many of us are very interested in seeing the game succeed. There are also a lot of us that have played other, more complex naval simulation games, so we are not a fair representation of the 'casual gamer' that is probably mostly buying this game. So I would not take this poll as anything indicative of most of the people that have bought and play this game.
I don't see why having the experimental rules 'in flux' bothers you so much. I am enjoying the game, and my son and I are enjoying testing the experimental rules. It is fun to have a little variety plus have some input into the evolution of the game. Especially since the variety of units to play is fairly limited right now with just one set. Now is the time to 'crash test' the rules and make adjustments.
Take an 'explorers' attitude and sail to an unknown coast! Who knows what you will find?

Yes, I agree with you, you're right.
The experimental rules being in a state of undecidedness bothers me as IMHO, I consider the out of box rules as broken. Not by much, mind you, but broken none the less. So I am a tad antsy because I have already shelled out the $400.00-$450.00 dollars. I guess I'm like someone who just bought a new TV and it breaks down after a month. I'd sure like to hope that it's covered by a waranty here...when it's fixed I'll feel much better, I'm sure.

I am between 1 and 2, but had to put option 1 down since that outweighs option 2.
Good poll. ;)

I play number 1 as well, though i would love to try out some of the experimental rules. They seem to stick to origional rules well enough, but just enhance it a little.

Is anyone aware if WotC is going to make the experimental rules official anytime in the future? Or even officially optional? Or will they just remain something for the boards members to utilize as a casual set of suggestions??
Sorry, I've been away for about a month or so, I need a refresher course!

Never heard anything, but me thinks set II will come out first.

I would think they would want to get the rules down before committing any more stat cards to print on a game system that would be possibly changing in nature.

I certainly have the impression from Richards work on the core development rules that they are serious about adjusting the core rules as soon as they have something they are comfortable with, and that gets reasonably positive feedback from this group. (You can never please everyone). I agree it makes no sense for them to lock down Set II unit statistics and SA's until they get the core rules the way they want them. Otherwise they have just that many more units to deal with 'adjusting'.

Just read his post about the slight rules update. He (and his gang) seem to be workin' hard on the rules changes. At this rate I think we could expect an official call by late summer early fall?
What could help him out is more feed back from games played from various player rather than just a handfull. And that includes me as well. I have Friday off. I'll play a few games with Cole Younger (Pete) and Give feed back on the game.

At my current juncture in time I play by the rules. The only exception would be that defence breaks ties when rolling. I am still in the infancy stages with my knowledge of the game since I have just picked up a starter and am limited severely in my tactical doctrine. (anybody have a Bismark for sale ha ha)
