View Full Version : PT Boat Armor Question

I was playing a learning game of WaS last night and my kids attacked my PT boat unit with a unit of Zekes. The Zekes got one hit on the PT boat - which equaled its armor of one - so one hull point of damage was applied face down.

At the end of the phase, the PT boat sinks (is destroyed) as it has suffered hull hits/damage equal to its hull points. It was then that I noticed the vital armor of two for the PT boat. Since the PT boat is going to be destroyed with just one hull hit, why bother with a vital armor of two?

Is there a situation regarding PT boats where there might be a game difference between getting one damage versus getting the vital armor hit of two damage?

I cannot think of one.

I think it's just because AH didn't want any ships to have the same armor and vital armor, as it would confuse new players.

I'm engaging in pure speculation here, and I am most likely incorrect, that in the future I wouldn't be surprised if a distinction on when damage takes place happens.

If, for example, you beat the Vital Armor of 2 on that PT Boat you auto-sink it and it can't do anything the rest of that phase. Whereas, if you just beat its Armor it could still fight back that phase.

As I said it is pure speculation and probably is utter rubbish. But, it could be, very hypothetically speaking, another explanation for why this is the case.

That's what I thought as well - maybe in the future this will be the rule.

Could be for the points, least in an ideal world where the cost value of ships is determined by their abilities and skewed for their faction and balance. Having a vital of 2 made it worth what it's worth rather than even cheaper (perhaps cheaper than the designers wanted).

Ugh! In my opinion vital armor hits occur too often already. I don't think penalizing you even more for making a vital armor hit would be a good idea at all. :(

In the games I've played (usually 2-3 games a night, two nights a week, for the past hmm shortly after the game came out) I very rarely meet/exceed vital armor.

Maybe, if my speculation ever happens it'd only target items like the PT Boat or ships/models in that situation.
