View Full Version : Plastic tokens for War at Sea

Thin paper tokens always sorta bummed me out, so when Litko Aerosystems announced they were offering a custom plastic token service, I became pretty excited. When I read a news link on another miniature gaming website that they had put together a plastic token set for another WWII tabletop wargame, that got me motivated.
I shot an email to their customer service department about a possible set for War at Sea, and the first response went beyond my expectation – they put a package together there and then!
Since War at Sea is an untested market for them, there is a minimum number of preorders required – 25, to be exact – but once that minimum is met the set will enter the regular production offering and will be available for order anytime.
The set offered is as follows:
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k149/Asqlep/AxisandAlliestokenset.jpg
There are 1 or 2 extra tokens here and there beyond what is included in the War at Sea starter kit. I asked about this, and it was explained to me that this was due to the quantity of each plastic token cut during the process. It would cost the same either way, so the consumer gets the extras. The price of the set is also a substantial savings compared to regular price of their custom tokens.
This is a link to a page with a colour photo of the custom tokens:
http://www.litkoaero.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LAI&Product_Code=CTOK001
This is a link that sets up a shopping cart to order the token set:
AXIS and ALLIES NAVAL BATTLE, set of 40 tokens, $20.00
www.litkoaero.com/custom/AXIS-ALLIES-NAVAL/20.00/.10
I was asked by the Litko representative that I make sure everyone understood that all orders will be held until they have 25 total orders, and all items included with that order will be held as well. Anyone is welcome to check with them via email or phone call regarding the current status of the order count.
I am NOT an employee of Litko Aerosystems, nor affiliated with them in any way beyond that of being an interested customer who emailed them about a possible set of plastic War at Sea tokens.

Q: would the text show through to the other side?
TheJudge

Am I reading that right? 40 tokens for $20?
Wouldn't it be a lot better to buy another starter box for less than $20, get the tokens, more maps, and......MINI's!!
Asqlep
07-31-2007, 01:27 PM
I only have the linked photo to go by, but the text is printed on one side of the token. So, while the text would be probably be visible, it would also be reversed and on the other side of the token.
It would be, IMO, difficult to mistake a right-side-up from an upside-down token.
It's also worth a reminder here that only 2 of the 6 token types are ever placed face down anyway.
I have done my best to provide you with all the information I have in my text and with the relevent links. I say again, I am NOT an employee, or any other type of representative, of Litko Aerosystems, so if you have any questions I recommend contacting them and posting their reply here for others to read. I will say that when I emailed them, the transparent and fluorescent tokens were my proposal, for the simple reason that they look much cooler than the solid colour tokens :)

Perhaps, but no matter how many minis you own, your tokens would still be thin, paper, and (at least for me) difficult to pick up.

Ok, since I am a relatively smart fellow, I'll go out on a limb and say that these are PLASTIC tokens? It doesn't say that anywhere in the text above but I have to assume that they are based on the colors stated and terms like cutting.
I suppose that is not so much if you really don't like the cardboard tokens.

The thread title specifically reads "Plastic tokens", and the photo link to the samples display an obviously plastic product. I am sorry if these these indicators were not sufficiently clear about the nature of the product, but again, I am just a gamer, not an advertising executive.
edit: I had also indicated these were plastic tokens in my closing remark. Regardless, I have added the word "plastic" several additional time for clarity.

Only problem is that we're missing a strafing token in this set.
I wouldn't mind some of the fog/smoke tokens either.

nothing beats some stretched out cotton balls for fog!
the tokens would be a worthy pick up, but I'm not wild about their transparency

I would probably be 'in' for two sets. I agree a 'Strafing' token would be a nice add. One question, are there not any licensing or copyright issues with this?

I make tokens for SWM. 33 tokens for $5. Each piece of cardboard is mounted on a glass bead with a foam back (colored). The bead makes it easier to read the token (and easier to pick up). If you don't want to read the token, just look at the color.
I'll make some up for WaS and post a picture.

Well, there's no logo involved, and it's not an "official" product, just a collection of plastic shapes with fairly mundane english words printed on them. A fully-licensed product with logo-embossed backs would be really cool, but I won't hold my breath there.
I made my own tokens for A&A land battles, but for WAS I wanted the precision-cut gemetric shapes. They add something to the game, imo.
Smoke and strafing would have been cool, but I think Litko hit the price point just right here.

Believe it or not I spent a lot of money and had my own set of tokens made by litko. I would have loved to have the price point for this set of tokens. I can say that the tokens are of good quality. You won't be disappointed at this price. The gamer geek in me just couldn't resist these cool tokens that were easy to pick up and looked very well done.
I am interested in seeing the tokens mounted on a glass bead. If the price is right they might be a good alternative.

I like the concept, though not the cost. In some of the large scale battles I play in three sets of tokens are not enough...
Why aren't the damage markers in red? They seem to have that color as an option.

They do look like nice quality and the $$ isn't bad. I've been hoping that GF9 would make something for War @ Sea though. I know it is dubious since they make markers/tokens for WoTC's competitor (Heroclix stuff) but one can dream.

Not necessarily a problem. GF9 makes a DreamBlade mat under license from WoTC. I stopped by the GF9 booth at Origins and told them I would like them to make tokens and a nice quality mat for WaS. They said they had gotten quite a few requests. I would imagine the issue is negotiating an acceptable deal with WotC.
Until then I would buy at least two sets if you decide to organize a group purchase. I might be able to get a couple more set commitments from my playgroup.

People play Dreamblade? Wow, color me surprised. If GF9 did make War @ Sea tokens, and etc, it'd be quite impressive. They make a lot of great product. Laser etching and everything.
I'm gonna mention these plastic tokens to everyone at my local tourney tomorrow night. Maybe there'll be some interested parties there.

Took some balsa wood (12" by 12") from a craftstore. (about 3 bucks or so)
traced the counters on the sheet. Cut them out with a jig saw. glued them. then I sanded off the excess surrounding of the token with a small tip drum sander.
after that
I "edged" them with a dark blue sharpie.
6 sets out counters took about 5-6 hours.
Well worth the time. Work seems less when you have music. ;)

To Asqlep:
I'm wondering why you went w. the transparent colors rather than the solids?
For some, like the Damage & Destroyed, it looks like the solid red & black would more closely match the original counters.
Anyways, I may be in for a set. I had checked these guys out but decided to just mount the current ones on a thicker stock instead of getting customs made.

I totally felt the same way, Sherigon. I normally make my own tokens, printing them onto adhesive paper at home and applying to pre-cut hardwood shapes. War at Sea, though, used so many different shapes and I wanted to retain that look and feel. Pre-cut wood shapes were not available in the required variety, and balsa is too lightweight and lacks durability for my taste. When Litko announce their custom service, I was totally jazzed, but the variety of tokens made it a little too cost-prohibitive for me. Not that I feel it is overpriced, I think it’s totally reasonable, but the number of extra tokens pushed it over for me. I had considered approach Litko about a possible set, but hadn’t gotten around to it.
When I saw a news item on TMP that someone had done the same thing I was thinking about doing for a different game, that was all the motivation I needed. As you can read in the original post, Litko was responsive and helpful.
Those aerosystems tokens look good. I also liked their fluorescent green "BLIP" markers - hmm - potential to use in house rules for WaS as dummy counters or long range reminders...
I am purchasing blip counters in two different colours to use with hidden/spotting rules. Players move blips around the tabletop until visual confirmation is made, either by fleet proximity or aerial recon. I think this will be a great addition to AKI’s tabletop conversion (http://toomuchlead.blogspot.com/ - pretty much the BEST set of house rules to get no input from this board, IMO). Anyway, yes, those blip counters, along with many of Litko’s other tokens, are pretty awesome.

From what I had seen in person, as well as the photos on the web, the solid colour tokens looked a little washed out while the transparent looked dynamic, especially how they caught the light. It comes down to aesthetics. With some games, tokens should be subtle and non-invasive, mostly a concern with scale-model tabletop wargaming (for which I still wouldn’t go with Litko – the colours are just not right). War at Sea, though, is not (IMO) that type of game. The ship scale is expanded, and the board is not a seascape. I looked at the board with the models and imagine both token types next to them. The solid material couldn’t hold a candle to the transparent and fluorescent stock.

hehe there's that "you" again - Please remember this is a public forum, not my personal thread. :)
As soon as Litko has 25 preorders, they will put the set into production. When that happens, they will produce and ship the ordered sets. After this, the set will be available for order again at any time.
I have not checked with them regarding the status of the number of orders, but I can confirm that there has been at least one preorder (mine).
Regarding language semantics, I was told that it is safe (not against the Code of Conduct) to talk about tokens and where to find them. Blatent advertising is not allowed. I feel I am walking a bit of a thin line here with this thread: I want to answer any questions people have, but I am also just another "Joe Gamer". Feel free to PM me with any questions, but for this thread, please stick with tokens, otherwise I feel like I am spamming the board.
That said, I am digging on these for SMOKE tokens:

Anyone who is curious about the order quantity is welcome to contact Litko about the order quantity either by phone or email. I had shot them an email earlier, and so their service department helpfully sent me an order qty update this week - we're looking at 13 right now.
This actually sounds about right; I was thinking around 18, but I was also including a local gaming group by which I was only getting the info to by proxy. We saw one of them post in this thread http://boards.avalonhill.com/showthread.php?t=22187. I PM'd Thalan, and they game Thu-Fri, so I am hoping early next week to be pretty close to 20.
I also put in a separate order to Litko for some of their radar blip counters and smoke columns, and will post some pics when they arrive.

On another note Litko sells elevated grids. I purchased 2 of their elevated air support grids.
My intention is to see if they are large enough to place the attacking aircraft over the target ship. Then you could turn the aircraft sideways above the target ship to indicate strafing or possibly have attacking aircraft engage defending aircraft on the same grid...
Of course I could just be out of my mind;)

Heya J_J,
You're a genius!
Those are the smoke columns I ordered. I was thinking about using them to mark damage on ships as extra dressing, like setting a smoke column by a ship when crippled. For a sample pic I planned on posting tonight or tomorrow, I was thinking a couple wafting off the deck of the Enterprise would look cool.
I sorta dismissed the idea of using them for smoke screens since the column just didn't look right. Lining up 3 or 4 for a smoke screen, though, that would work great! Thanks for jogging my imagination!
The blip counters - those I imagined using for hidden sub rules and/or hidden movement. The numbered ones really make this possible. The fleet could be divided up among the numbered tokens, and those would be moved until recon by aircraft or by encorporating a plain old sighting rule. Both these ideas work great with AKI's tabletop conversion (http://toomuchlead.blogspot.com/), probably less so on the official game surface, that seems too small for hidden movement.
I realize, of course, that any numbered tokens would work, but these just look cool! :D

Heya folks!
I promised some pictures, so here they are!
The blip tokens are 20mm across (flat to flat), which is about the size of the square and circular custom tokens. The hex and oval seem a bit smaller in the picture on Litko's site. I'm not sure if, when I order number blips, if I will order amber or blue along with the green; the amber will contrast better but will also match the damage markers. I'll probably wait a bit and see if they add colours. Like I said before, I think these will really shine used with AKI's tabletop conversion rules along with hidden fleet movement.
The smoke columns work pretty well as screens. I'd really like a smoke screen marker like this http://www.thegamestore.be/store/popup_image.php?pID=3487&osCsid=6d9ca8dcf7903918c5123e10b0575793, downsized to about 60%, because one piece would be simpler than three. Don't work quite as well as damage markers (not horrible, but not supercool either). As you can see, the transparent grey is pretty dark

I just finished speaking with Lisa of Litko. As of Today Friday August 17, 2007
there are 18 orders placed. I have committed to 5 more. We need two more orders placed by Tuesday August 21, 2007 to make 25. Lisa will call me on tuesday afternoon Indianna time. Which will be morning here in California.
If we are still short at that time I will increase my order to make 25.

Maybe, Royal - initially the different colours were to differentiate players. Having unsuccessful searches could lead to improved odds for the next round. I'll write something out eventually.
Thanks also for helping with this little project! I appreciate the updates and commitment, as I'm sure everyone else who's preordered does :)!

Suggestion, it should lead to worse odds, as the sub has a bigger radius to have moved into from last known position.

Totally my pleasure - I had been eyeballing those tokens for a good bit of time before getting the bug to propose the set. Litko dropping about 30% off the regular price of their custom tokens was a nice incentive of them to offer, as well - normally, 40 custom tokens would run $28 :)
And yes, my tokens are looking grungy - after about three failed attempts to pick them up, I just lick my finger so it sticks - ewwwww:eek:

Those certainly are the small, medium, and large smoke columns. For the second size comparison on the USS Enterprise model, I used the small and medium markers.
Also, my amateur photo studio was my kitchen table with a very bright overhead light - much brighter than normal gaming conditions (or any other, really, imo :D). This lightened up the markers by a pretty good margin. There was some concern earlier about the choice of transparent grey over solid black for the Destroyed tokens, but really, the grey is actually quite dark.

Good news all,
At 0600 PST Dee of Litko Aerosystems informed me that they had 23 confirmed orders. I placed orders to complete the 25 needed for production to begin.
at 0925 PST I called to make sure I heard correctly that all 25 orders had been payed for. Dee not only confirmed that, but said they were already beginning production of the tokens.
Anticipated completion Estimate: the first 25 orders are estimated to be completed by this Friday August 24, 2007. Again this is an estimate. If the estimate is accurate, all continental US orders would ship and begin arriving
3-4 Business days after completion.
There was one order from Australia. The order's shipping showed regular international shipping. Not Priority. This order is estimated to arrive with in 14 business days after completion. There is a caveat: Customs, either US or AUS, Might Delay Delivery, pushing the delivery time to 4 weeks.
So again the Plastic Tokens are now in production.
Friendly Regards,
Michael Taylor

My previous order with Litko went in after business hours on August 7th, a Tuesday. Friday morning, two business days later, I had a shipping notice waiting in my email box. That Monday I had a package in my mailbox containing my order, from Indiana to California.
Suffice to say, I was pleased with the speed of my transaction.

Gale Force 9 also makes great products, but based on your's and other's testimony I'd have to say they are no where near as helpful or interested in customer input as Litko is.
Heck, I only wrote to Likto that I would like to see a set like this, and the next day they made it happen (pending preorders). You actually spoke to a GF9 representative and came back with "lukewarm". Speaks volumes to me.

I will probably add some to a later order - I was thinking a fluorescent blue arrow, so, same colour as the 'aborted' token. I'll have 10 then, so will probably give some away.

I made tokens for WaS. I glued the a photocopy of the cardboard token onto a clear glass bead. On the back goes a piece of foam corresponding to the color of the token. The glass bead makes reading the token much easier.
Like I said, I sold all that I took to Gencon. If you saw me playing WaS in the SWM area, you most likely bought a set of tokens. I'll post a picture in the next day or two. $5 is a lot cheaper than $20.

Whelp, what I was told in the email from Litko was, "Once we have 25 orders, the sets will all be produced and the set can then be ordered at any time."
The link to order the WaS set is still active, as well as the set for I Ain't Been Shot, Mum, which prompted me to get my fingers moving. I expect Litko my just be trying to figure out how they're going to approach these sorts of products.
I did have an email from Litko waiting on Thursday morning saying my order had shipped as well. Definitely give them a ring and check, Weeds. Like Royal said, Litko reps are very helpful and friendly, and I'd hate for there to be an issue with your order after all your help with this project :(.

I spoke to two very nice ladies at Litko. Dee David was the rep quoted in reply #85 of this thread. Before that I spoke to a lady named Lisa twice.
When you call, give them your order number.
As I said in reply#85 they started production that same day. Other members received shipping information a day or two before I received mine.
It appears that Litko is still working to complete the sets. As I said the Estimated completion date was Friday.
In the mean time I have 4 sets arriving next week.

Just to give you an idea, They are 1/8th inch thick. The destroyed and objective counters are circular, 3/4 diameter. The damage counters are square 3/4 X 3/4. They are a hard plastic. I had the impression from the picture that they would be kind of rubbery, they're not. I have two more sets on order and I plan on ordering the flame counter later on. In a nut shell, everyhting is bigger, easier to read and pick up.

Playing co-worker, and his son. I took: Rodney, Exeter, 2x Javelin, and 2x Sea Hurricane.
Co-worker took: Bismark, Scharnhorst, Karl Galster, Kondor.
Co-workers Son took: Washington, Baltimore, 2X Fletcher, Barb.
I took out: Bismark, Baltimore, 1 Fletcher, Co worker Took out Both Javelins and Exeter and 1 Fletcher. Son took out everything else except my Sea Hurricanes. Having no ships left. I conceded to son who still had washington. An enjoyable game made more so by the new plastic counters.

I've already ordered some smoke pieces and radar blips due to seeing them here next to the ships.

According to Asqlep's first post Litko was planning to offer these as a regular item once they got the first 25 orders. However, I could not find it on their site. I would suggest you email them and ask. Their web site is:

That is a good idea. I don't mind the transparency except the printing is not very bold so it is hard to read. I was thinking about carefully painting the text more solidly with white paint. But I know it won't look very good if I do it with my shaky hands. Painting the back side a very dark tone of the token color may work.
I told Litko I was not completely pleased with the text printing in the satisfaction survey they sent me. Still, I like them a whole lot more than the thin cardboard one's that come in the starter set. At least I can grab them with my fingers quickly and easily.

In the first two Luca's combine their smoke to help a damaged Bolzano reach the safety of the island while the Canberra and Exeter bore down on her. The third Luca helps conceal the Graf Spee as it moves in to assist. One of our house rules is if two destroyers with lay smoke combine the concealment role goes from 5-6 to 4-6, giving a better chance to evade.

Sorry All,
I just spoke to Dee of Litko Aerosystems. I asked if the plastic tokens price had been lowered to $10.00.
She checked, and told me that the price had not been lowered. It is still $20 for 40 tokens.
She also said that they are in the process of putting a direct link on the Litko Website. The Estimated time frame is 2 weeks to 1 month.
She asked that anyone interested in purchasing the tokens access the Litko website at www.litkoaero.com
Click on the contact litko link and e-mail them that you are looking for the Axis and Allies War At Sea custom tokens. and give them your e-mail address
She said that she would e-mail a direct link to you so you could place your order. Litko has been just outstanding with their customer service.

I just wanted to say thanks for the suggestion oddfellow - I'd seen plexiglass mentioned on the boards before but your post was so specific that I ran out and did it, and it's awesome.
I don't know if it will last (not sure if it's from the protective plastic adhesive or static electricity) but once I set the plexiglass down the maps and islands stick to it so well I can move it from place to place, etc.

GF9 sells some island 6 for 30 bucks. Made of hard plastic very nice. They are suppose to be for pirates but they work great with WAS. You can try ebay as well. I got 2 sets of islands (24 total islands) for 24 bucks. :) Brand new never open too!

:) Hello, as a stopgap measure I printed my own tokens on a transparency sheet with my scanner and printer. They are almost paper thin but they will hold up much better that the cardboard ones will. With this method you can make them whatever size and color you want. You could even print them with your name on them top keep track of them better if you wanted.:)

Hey guys! I just joined this forum but have been lurking for several weeks. I had bought some extra tokens to represent additional troops for the AA board game. When I got my WAS minis I took the combat tokens and superglued them to some of the extra chips I had. I used enough glue so that when pressed down on, the glue seeped out from under the chip and sealed the edges of the paper chips to the token.
While not as cool as the custom tokens (I'm gonna buy a couple of sets of them). They do work very well and only cost me a little time. Just another option to consider.

I bought a set of these Litko tokens. They are great because they stand up on edge. I had a little trouble telling s 1-damage counter from a 2-damage counter so I took a black permanent marker and filled in the four small sides of the 2-damage tokens. Now they work even better. Litko markers rock

Has anyone got a set of the Litko smoke or weather markers?
I have some of the GF9 smoke makers, but I find them to be a bit cumbersome for my taste.
Also, Litko has a great "rain" marker as part of their weather marker set, but the only problem is its only 3 cm high. If they could make that twice the size it would be perfect for a squall.
Anyone have pix of either of these?

Has anyone got a set of the Litko smoke or weather markers?
I got some of the smoke columns (I think Medium size)
Now, they don't really look like smoke *screens* but they get the job done and I like 'em. When I'm not playing a scenario with smoke screens I use them instead of crippled markers (for surface ships) and it adds some flavor

So, I never wrote an update to this thread (classes started - arrgh) after I received my own set of markers, but I can safely say that I am pleased with my purchase. Though the etched printing is a little dim, the cuts are sharp and the colours really POP on the game mat.
With the tokens dialed in, that leaves the other two components to take care of that are lacking in the quality department - the thin paper playmat and the cardboard islands. I have my mat laminated, and keeping the A&A graphics are the first priority to me, so the next step there will be professional mounting. The cardboard islands will be my next candidate for replacement.
For the islands, I am looking at something like this:
http://www.io.com/~beckerdo/games/articles/SettlersI.html
Besides looking good on the table, it's also important to me that they match the official Hasbro-included islands. That was my biggest beef with the GF9 islands - they looked great, but while I didn't play Pirates they still didn't seem to match any of the card islands included in that game (though maybe they did in later sets, just not the first).
When and if I get started on some custom islands, I'll start a new thread.
Regarding Litko Smoke Columns - I have some pictures posted waaaaaaaay back in this thread. I'll page back and find a link for you, if the links are even still any good! :)

Aye! I've done a lot of my own resin casting, so yes - it can get pricey. For anyone looking to break into it, I give you this advice: start with the silicon mold material! I tried out both latex and urethane before silicon (those options are less expensive), but it just wasn't worth the savings. Silicon is just easier to work with, both for making the mold AND casting the models.
That said, I probably won't be making any molds of my islands - I only really want a single set for myself and will probably just stick with matching what Hasbro provided on the cards. One can always make molds from the painted masters later, and any damage can be easily touched up.
Of course, I also have to get the time and motivation to start the project - it might be a Set II sort of thing :)
If you liked that site, do a google search for more 3D Settlers boards. I remember finding a few, and actually, if I remember correctly, there's a couple links on that site as well to other 3D Settlers projects.
Glad you found it helpful! :)

After looking into the resin molds, I'm a bit discouraged at the cost ... especially for larger islands and land masses :(. I'd have to intend to make a lot of them and sell them to make it worthwhile. My foam islands work great for the time being I guess ... but I can't stop thinking about the resin ones.

I am a bit long in the reply here, but maybe others might find the advice useful. Yeah, you've hit the nail right on the head here. Each project you take on might need a little cost analysis work. I know that, with all the different island types, my prototype won't have molds made from them - they'll be the originals.
I've done a lot of resin casting projects, making prototypes, molds, and casting, and I learned mainly through trial and error. It is A LOT of fun, and very rewarding, but if it's something you're going to cast, say, three times, you'll find it might not be worth it.
