May seem like a simple ? but here it is

Whats the distance in inches or mm for a sector if we play game off the starter deck.

We have some nice prepainted boards at our club so it would be nice to use them

Thanks for help

88 x 88 mm for a sector. That must be a little less than 3.5 inches.

To be completely honest, if I was to make a custom board I would make the sectors/hexs a little bigger.

I can't stand seeing Yamato/Iowa/Hood spanning over almost 1 1/2 sectors.

If you put them in diagonally it's nowhere near 1.5 sectors.

and use the guns to move sideways. :D

still don't feel right placing them like that. I don't mind doing it with my carriers as they tend to stay still. but, with my ships I have a bad habit of facing them the dirrection I intend on moving them, and ending their movement broadside >_<

actualy is a bad habit, one I should stop, kind of gives what I want to do away.

I'm actualy curious if I am the only one that does this >_<

So if I used range from center of each ship as 1=88MM 2 =166 etc etc that should work I hope

That would look brilliant.

If you have the space for it :D

It is just my personal opinion to use your own scale for custom made tables. But I am the sort of person, if I had the resorces I would play 1:700 scale ships and use a basketball court for the map.

Planning on doing the same for myself when I get around to it. The place I play has a "louge" out the back of the shop, and has already said they would be happy to keep a custom table there for me. I want mine to be 150 mm by 150 mm. (ps they would want to be bloody happy to keep it there after the money I have spent there ;) )

Paper place mat is annoying, and bad for rolls!

I've found that 4" / 100mm hexes (measured from edge to edge, not for vertex to vertex) work quite well... put the bigger ships in the middle, where they'll only stick out a bit, and the smaller ones on the sides. It looks great!

I was also considering doing away with a grid altogether. In that case, one could simply use 4" (or 5") to be one "space". So most ships would move 8", BB guns would have 18" range, AA (and aircraft) could fire at anything within 2", etc. You could even fine-tune it, for example so that DDs moved a bit faster.

LoneWolf, I do the same. But then again, I play with Facing Rules, so it does kinda serve a purpose ;)

Not to hijack the thread, but if you're looking for a start at WaS Tabletop you could do a lot worse than this bloke's add-on ruleset:

If not using facing rules you could stretch the map (or skew maight be better term) so that all ships are placed on the length of the streched out hexes/rectangles. That could help the big ships fit better without having to use a huge map area.

At the risk of sounding like a jerk for correcting your math, you might want to make it 1=88MM 2 =176 etc
