View Full Version : Using a 2nd Akagi for a Kaga?

What would players think about using a second Akagi for the Kaga in games? I know the ship class limitations say to use just one Akagi, but I'd hate to see it go to waste (having two large carriers can be a good thing in higher point games).

I think a lot of people already do that. They were very similar. Also, there is no restriction on the units you can use unless you choose to follow the historical limits. It is not required. It really comes down to the people you play with agreeing to it.

I'd have no problem with it. These things aren't cheap so the historical limits can be annoying.
Akagi and Ark Royal are the 2 most common units that you can easily proxy for another ship. Ark Royal can be a Illustrious and Akagi can be Kaga of course. No harm, no foul.
Hood is the one that yanks my chain because it really is one of a kind. You can't really change the card unless you want to so it can't really be anything else because there is no similar ship. :(

I have said this earlier in another thread so hear goes again. You have to ignore nearly all historical limits because they haven't released enough ships. Use the Ark Royal for however many carriers the british built. Use Shokaku as Soryu. Wait until they've released the ships before worrying about historical limits.

The carrier Akagi had her island amidships, on the port (very unusual placement) side. Kaga had her island, close to the same size, on the starboard side, up forward. So, if one is of the mind and it's worth the effort to you...one could exacto the island off Akagi, and move it forward and across the flight deck, you'd have an approximation of Akagi's psuedo-sister. 'Course, you'd have to do something with the 'stack' hanging out the side...or ignore it.

I say historical limits be damned if they aren't going to make enough different ship classes to recreate actual historic battles. Issuing a set of repaints makes this matter all the more infuriating.

I've also said it in another thread. Why limit game play. If you want to proxy and more than historical limits, go for it.

The Kaga was a bit shorter and slightly broader in beam. The stack was in about the same location on both ships, with the Kaga's a little smaller. Since the Kaga is in bits and pieces on the ocean floor off of Midway, I suspect that her crew would not object to the dual use.

Very good and reasonable points by all here. I've said it on other threads, but at this point in the game we need to be flexible when it comes to Historical Limits when playing "historical." I think the princples of availability and rough equivalency should be observed. Use the number of available rough equivalents in history to determine game limits. Thus, multiple Akagis wouldn't be a problem but a third Yamato would.
Ark Royal, Akagi, Bolzano should all be useable in multiples in a "historical" fleet as long as they don't exceed the historical number of similar available ships.
The Hood is a wild card, since it really was one of a kind.

Yes, you can only really use 1 Hood, maybe you can use it as a stand in for the repulse if you take away fatal flaw. That's pushing it a little though.

I usualy play under historical limits, though I kind of consider Ark Royal and Akagi to be the exception.
