Can someone tell me how to bid, and what it is supposed to accomplish?

I've been wondering the same thing. To me, it sounds like some sort of "Disadvantage-equalizer" by IPCs. Am i wright? im clueless.

right its to balance the game out.

bid 8 for Axis. Meaning give me $8 and I will take the Axis. Then u put 1/2 the $ amount on board pre-game start and then give rest of money to starting income.

You can only place units as well. No IC or gun etc.

thats an example. So far, I am not convinced you need a bid. anywhere from 0 to 16 is probably what you will find out there.

AxisRoll,

I'm also new to the bidding deal. Is the norm out there that 1/2 goes on the board and 1/2 goes into the pot? Is that just for Germany too, nothing toward Japan, right? I know it can probably be done anyway a player saw fit, but I would like to stay as close to the "norm" as possible. My friends and myself have been using the bid solely for placing pre-game. As little as 3 IPC's pre-game makes a bigger difference than what any of us imagined. So a bid of 8 goes toward 4 pre-game and 4 into Germany's bank for turn 1 purchasing. Sounds good.

Team A bids X IPC

Team B bids Y IPC

Whoever has the lower bid plays Axis with the amount of IPC's they bid (this number is typically 0-15. The less confident you feel with Axis, the higher you should bid)

1/2 of the bid (rounded down) can be spent on units to be placed prior to game start

The remainder of the bid can be given to either Germany or Japan (or split between the two) as cash (to be spent on their first turn)

Cousin _Joe,

Thanks! By the way, your post on increasing the V.C.'s and ideas there-after are right on the button, at least I feel. I sure would like to give them a try with the group I game with.

You need to be careful here on how one explains a bid. There are different ways to bid in different game plays. Example, for PBEM is different than some FTF tournaments.

In FTF play, yes it helps balance the game if need be but also helps in determination of who plays what side...

Yes, I agree that the bid for a 8VC game is slowly eroding to nothing and helps more in just determining the side...but in tournament play at the major CONs, you bid for a number of IPC's you will grant your opponent to play one side or the other. You cannot buy techs or IC's and any money left over is GONE! You may not save any money for future purchases either. All money must be used to purchase units before play begins. You may also buy AA guns because they are considered units.

Hope this helps...

BTW, thanks C_J for that reply. That's how online clubs will be doing their bidding system for AAR. The 2nd edition bidding system for online play works as in Cousin_Joe's description, except that all of the bid may be pre-placed.

I look at abid this way:

Everyone usually has a favorite side to play. One they think can win, or they are better at. So a bid is like saying, "how much are you willing to give for your choice" Sort of the "you got first pick" so the other gets something too.

If neither side is an advantage to you then see if you can squeeze something out to make an advantage.
