This topic is to express that I would (enthusiastically) purchase expansions for Cosmic Encounter if AH were to release them.
I'm hoping others will post their votes for the release of expansions as well, so AH will consider the project.

Hello SGHughes.
I'm not sure if the 500 or so memebrs of this board could possibly produce enough votes to constitute a significant market demand, but since you have solicited help in this matter...
I hearby pledge to purchasse any expansions for Cosmic Encounter that Avalon Hill sees fit to release.
Hope this works.

Laugh, I like this topic. I would also pledge to buy any expansions for Cosmic. Especially any that introduce some new alien power and more types of artifact cards.
I have actually hand made 3 expansion pieces for the game and bought some playing pieces to use as ships. I have played a couple of 6 player games and even one seven player game using these boards. The games went great (I actually ended up going for a 2 player win to win the seven player game) except that I ran into card shortages. We had to make some new rules about maximum hand size and such.
Anyway, while the homemade expansion works, I would love to buy an official suppliment.
Here's hoping that our voices are heard.

I wanted to pick this up for a get together this weekend but with only 4 players one of us would be left out. Boo.

Where do y'all think you are, the OLD Avalon Hill? tongue.gif The new games are nicely done, but I'm afraid the days of regular new releases, variants published in the General, and actually listening to a handful of noisy but loyal customers is long gone... Might as well make our own variants and share 'em here, 'cause Hasbro won't make anything unless they can sell a gazillion copies.

Hey, I'm interested.
If you have a good variant for an AH game that you'd like to share, contact me (steve.winter@wizards.com). If I use it for the website, you'll even get paid. I'll look at strategy articles, rules variants, even interesting replays.

Actually, somehow I'd missed the news about AH being transfered to WoTC. That changes things a bit. I actually do have some variants hidden away somewhere, and I'll send them to you if I find them. Thanks.

For what it's worth I'll cast my vote for AH-produced expansions for CE too.

Well, I'm still awaiting an 'answer' to my own inquiry and is there a 'means' of producing the required items for these 'Variants'? I suppose that it ALL depends on what WE would like to do in this regard. What about if THOSE folks that don't happen to have the 'O'riginal 'Variants' would LIKE to get them? Anybody play "Conquistador" and doesn't have the "Fur Traders, etc." Variant? Would you WANT it if it were available? There are many more and they've all got their 'own' components in some form or another.

Well, I suppose you could pick up some extra game components from svgames.com, repaint them and fairly easily make a 5-6 player expansion. From there, it would be a matter of picking which additions from previous versions of the game you liked and would want to add. There are quite a few web resources you could use for this task (although some haven't been updated in a LONG time):

I've been trying to post here for a few days and it keeps getting eaten. I blame the Warp.
I naturally vote for an expansion. Looking at all the prior material that's been available for the previous incarnations, though, it seems like there is a ton of source material for someone itching to expand their game.
I won't hold my breath for an expansion, but it's nice to know I'm not alone in my appreciation of CE.

I absolutley love this game! I dont care much for the extra players but new aliens and and things sound cool. if not an expansion how about just a deck of new alien cards? That wouldnt be very expensive to produce and may invoke more interest in the base game.
Oh i almost forgot. I also pledge to buy any CE expansoin AH would care to release.

I would definitely buy expansions. I've been looking all over for power art to make my own, and I don't think it exists (online), so I would buy any expansion made.

I would absolutely purchase an expansion...I would probably purchase two of them actually. Fantastic game, biggest drawback is its only 4 players, fix that and you have a winner.

I would definitely make the investment. Personally, I enjoyed the moon expansions in the past, but never really got into the Lucre ones.
One relatively simple way AH could do this would be to issue two versions of the game...continue to make/distribute the existing one and a make a very similar "version 2" one. "Version 2" would be a stand-alone game that would look and play just like the existing one, but would have different colors and aliens. People who have one version of the game could get the other as an expansion and visa versa!

Perhaps another idea would be to simply offer, as an expansion, a few key things that most people agree on -
For example, many of the moon, lucre, flares, are a matter of taste - but most people agree that the two biggest needs are:
- Ability for 5-6 players to play
- More aliens
As such, maybe an expansion could be offered that simply included boards (wings) for 2 new colors, a new "Warp" to facilitate 6 systems, and 20 (or 30 or 50) new alien powers. Of course the expansion would also need to include the required ships in the two new colors as well as encounter cards and artifacts (either duplicates or new artifacts) to maintain play balance.
The nice thing about this type of marketing, is that AH (or whoever gets the rights after AH) could continue to market the 4 player version. It is still a good play and would be a more economical way to introduce new player to CE. In other words, newbies would be more likely to spend $20-$30 on the 4 player version, than have to cough up $40+ for a 6 player "deluxe" version with 75 Alien powers. (Although a "Deluxe" version would always be yet another marketing option!).
That would do two things: allow those who already own the game to "upgrade" without having to re-buy the entire game (i.e. good for veteran CE players) and still allow a reasonably priced 'entry level' game as a gateway to CE (for newer players).

The CE designers are pouring all of their efforts into the CE Online at the moment. I question whether they will ever publish it as a boardgame again.

Well, they were shopping around for a new publisher last year as Hasbro's license had expired. There hasn't been any word as to whether or not they found anybody yet though.

That's the thing, I don't think they are actively shopping it hard preferring to devote more resources to the Online game.
But that's just my speculation.
