well...I have had the opportunity to play some games with the July rules updates...man those DDs & DEs have come into their own...with "small ship evasion" , "torpedo attack in the surface attack phase" and "ASW threat"...they are worth their weight in gold...with Javilen and L.Targio throw in "smoke" and "sub-hunter"...and yikes!...it sure has changed the game...

I couldn't agree more, Adler.
You still need to be careful and don't expect to go toe to toe against cruiser groups or battlers, but they certainly are versatile and useful.
btw, You call them 'tin cans', we call them 'the boats' unless they are Tribals which are then refered to as 'the greyhounds'. (Definite article 'the' is used in each case.)
Old Oz navy cartoon:
Sailor and mate looking longingly at destroyer zooming past, says,"Oh! Gimme the boats. That's the life!"
Mate responds, "Yeah, all the speed and action you could want plus six meals a day - three down and three up."

Haha.:D
Tomorrow will be the first game since knowin' about the new rules. Should be something.
Especially for a Sub heavy guy like me.
Big fan of the silent service, I wonder how it'll change my game plan.

Just use Air support to take out those pesky destroyers. ASW can seriously reduce your effectiveness.

Well tonight you'll have the help of my magnificent Royal Navy:D , which is heavily based on surface ships, with a nice bit of air support (go Ark Royal FTW! ). Combine that with your sub packs and they should compliment each other quite well.

I love to use "smoke"...run several pairs of a Javilen with a L.Terrible...charge in against BBs with the Javilens laying smoke...you can get in close...then use the L.Terrible movement of 3...ouch...can we say surface torpedo attack...
Javilen is excellent for getting the U.S. MTBs in close as well...same with L.Targio for the Italians...
seldom use Crusiers now...mainly just to fill in a 200 pt. fleet...or of course if we limit the largest ships in the senarios to crusiers...
subs have it rather difficult now...the only sub fleet I have in my 200 pt. play book now is a German one..."wolf pack" helps a lot combinde with Kondors...the one fleet I like to run has 4 Kondors in it along with 7 U-boats...
