I got to play PTO battle 70 yesterday against Jedi37 at the FLGS. It was my first WaS win when playing him.

I was the defender IJN
Shokoku
2x Val
Zeke
2x Yakiku (#64)
Tone
Kongo
3x I-19
2x Sub chaser (they also got to shoot)
Transport

Jedi37 as the USN
Iowa
Baltimore
Atlanta
Fletcher
Salt Lake
Enterprise
2x Dive bomber
Wildcat
Barb

We rolled for map 6. I moved one side closer by one and then took that side (2 choices).

Turn 1
We both moved up, my subs shoot and missed. USN planes sunk one IJN DD and crippled the other. The IJN Val's hit the Salt Lake for 1 and one Val did not return.

Turn 2
IJN won init. The USN moved up to threaten the middle marker with the Iowa/Atlanta battle group. The Baltimore/Salt Lake/Fletcher went for the top marker. The IJN carrier took the marker one closer (under the guns from the Iowa). The Kongo/Tone group moved to range 2 from the Iowa (give the Iowa too many good targets to shoot at BB, CA, CL).

The Iowa only rolled 11 hits against the Kongo (vital armor 12), 1 hit. This was game breaking. The Iowa did not take any guns hits in return (silly 9 armor). The Altanta was sunk from the Kongo secondary guns and the Tone. The Iowa was hit by a IJN DD (the crippled one from turn 1), 2 damage. Then it kept getting hit from the 3x !-19 (thanks to "finish him off"). The Iowa did not survive the turn.

Turn 3
The Baltimore/Salt Lake/Fletcher were all sunk by the Kongo/Tone guns. The Kongo ended up with 3/5 hull damage and the Tone took 2 hits.

I don't think just the Tone could have taken on the USN cruisers by itself.

Win for the IJN (144 to 44).

Congrats, when those torpedo rolls come through the Japanese sure seem worth thier points.

The Altanta was sunk from the Kongo secondary guns and the Tone.

Like, the Kongo secondary guns scored damage, and then the Tone scored damage?

Yes. The rolls were just enough to hit (4 def on the Atlanta).

I think the IJN DD hitting a long Lance was the best shot of the game. Allowing the other 3x I-19's more more torpedo for "finish him off" was great.

Grats!

I played Battle 70 last Thursday night, for the USN. I considered at least half a dozen different builds before deciding upon:

Iowa
Atlanta
Fletcher x2
Enterprise
Wildcat x3
Catalina PBY x2
Barb x3

My opponent's ( IJN ) build:

Yamato
Kongo
Akagi
Zeke
Val
Kate
I-19
Transport

It was a fairly even battle for the most part, but IJN eventually resigned after I killed his carrier and Kongo, leaving the crippled Yamato at least three turns from retreating off the map, with one undamaged Barb on her tail and Iowa headed her way.

What had started as a three-to-one advantage in subs eventually became two-to-zero; I think this was the biggest single factor in the game for the USN.
