View Full Version : So why am I going to waste my $ on the new set?

Wow, after reading some of these advanced posts I am no longer looking forward to my visit to the LGS tmorrow as much as I was.

As someone who owns a majority of set 1-5 I am very dissapointed in the new larger scale. In my opinion it is almost like Wotc has started over. Great if you are just getting into the game, really sucks if you have already invested in it. Am I all alone here or does anyone else think that the new stuff looks horrible on the same board with the old?

I do not think I will want to mix the sets. Why would I spend time collecting something that does not look good with what I already have?

I thought the idea was to give us larger hex maps so the units would look better on it, not to increase the size of the units.

Well I already wasted my $20 on the expanded rules to get 2 map sheets and a photo copy quality set of rules. Now I think I will only purchase 1 starter to get the matching maps and scrap the new minis. I will definately not be picking up the cases I was thinking about.

I sure hope the Wotc design team responsible for this debacle does not have anything to do with WAS as I would hate to see them screw that up.

I suppose I should thank them for saving me some major cash. I have been on the fence with AAM anyway since WAS came out. My collection may hit E-bay by x-mas if the Afrika set does not improve and is more of the same.

I'll second this, $1800.00 in old stuff. But then again, I'm curmudgeonly. ;) :)

This should have been a poll.

some answers could have been:

As I see it, yes
Ask again later
Better not tell you now
Cannot predict now
Concentrate and ask again
Don't count on it
It is certain
It is decidedly so
Most likely
My reply is no
My sources say no
Outlook good
Outlook not so good
Reply hazy, try again
Signs point to yes
Very doubtful
Without a doubt
Yes
Yes - definitely
You may rely on it

I think most people should pick Maxi or Mini and just stick with it. If Mini cost is 50-75% of Maxi cost some will go one way and other will go the other. You want both? Crazy IMO.

Mod Note: This IS on topic.

JMHO,

Well, your a couple of months late with your rant. You did however lump most of the complaints into one post, 2 points for neatness.

Sorry, I have been focused on WAS.;) Probably a good thing.

Only 8...9...10 who realy knows how many months until Set II WAS. Well I will have plenty of time to save up my $ since I will not be spending it on this oversized underdetailed minis.

Anyone check out Wings of War? Talk about a quality game with some quality minis. :D

Back on topic I am curious to see them in person, but I still cannot see mixing 2 scales of armor. It is like WOTC is saying forget about all the supporters so far lets go after an entirely new group of buyers and see how many suckers we can get to go along with it.

JMHO,

I have lots of the v.1.0 stuff as well. I am going to go ahead and collect the new stuff, but not mix it with the old stuff. I will collect all the cool stuff from the new set and use it in my builds, as long as I have enough to feild an entire squad of whatever. I am not going to have mama humbars and baby humbars in the same build. Its either gonna be all 1.0 vehicles or all 2.0 vehicles.

I especially look forward to collecting the better looking infantry, for sure. The new infantry is supposed to look much better than the old stuff.

I won't have a problem with mixed scales. I may even strive to obtain pieces in both scales, just to **** off high-strung opponents. If something so minor can give me a psychological edge, I certainly won't pass up on it.

I have come t think of AAMinis as a dead game : I still have fun with the pieces I have - I still trade in and if I happen to get my hands on "mssing" pieces (Breda, Semovente, Mathilda, Spitfire :D, ...) I will be happy....

And there are the forums to have fun... ;)

Overall I think the new vehicles look OK, with a couple of exceptions.

I do not intent to by more than 2-3 of each type of AAM Ver2 vehicles, unlike my 14 PzIVG's, 8 12 Sherman M4A1's, 8 M3 Stuarts and 6 PzIIIF's, just to name a few.

I'll use the new ones for small scale skirmishes and the old ones for larger battles.

Of course this might change if the North Africa set is particularly good. WOTC, the future of the game will rest with the next release.

I have a feeling that the future is now. If this set tanks *pun intended* I think they will stop. Judging by the lackluster reviews its not looking good.

Real quick off-topic question if you don't mind.

Why do you spell it Mathilda? Every source I've ever seen it in spells it Matilda.

Well of course if you judge it by the "lackluster reviews", you'll think this set isn't good... why not judge it by the positive ones, for a change?

Besides, it always been the case that the unhappy people are voicing their opinions in the forums way more than the happy ones, who are just content to actually play the game. The forum gives a distorted image of the reality.

I bought two starters and two boxes of the set of five.

The maps LOOK really nice and I'm happy to have more variety on which to play. It's nice having a rule book with the updates, thought I was hoping for a section on the optional rules. I really don't care to have two sets of rules to carry. Having them on one book would have been a classy touch.

Overall I like the new molds for the game pieces. Yea, I'm not crazy about the new size in comparision to V.1. BUT, they are more detailed, are closer to the real tank (that is the point of a model after all!)

But, there is something that is not mentioned often here. Truth be told, it largely speculation, but I cannot help but wonder if WotC is hoping to lure away some of the game players of Flames of War, since now the scale it the same. IF that occures, then it will also help the continuation of the game and spawn (did I just say that?!) further development. [in that light, could we have a flame thrower T-34/76 please? Oh, and a P-40 Warhawk, oh, yes and a German Wespe, and .........]

There is one disapointment that I do have and it comes in two parts. First, that WotC did not keep the same look for the German Mk IV (the old 32 pt unit) when they introduced the new scale Mk IV. Parallel to this, I'm disappointed that they did not include it in the starter set. Really, the Mk IV is the equivalent to the M4 Sherman, Cromwell, and the T34/76. the Mk III that WotC did include just cannot stand up to those three. But having complained about that, I FINALLY have my last two T-34/76's that I've been trying to get on E-bay and in Set 1 purchases! Those things are about as rare as the California Condor!

So in the end, there is far more silver here to enjoy than lead.

Hum, i guess it's time to release my 4 "condors" by selling them or trading them for 2.0 Stuff! :)

I might be able to judge by positive reviews if there were more. I've seen now 2 positive reviews. About 6 negative. What does that say?

If someone is really just content to play the game they don't need ver. 2 unless they are just getting into the game. Which from what I've seen reviewed its a decent set then.

the new set looks awesome. 8 out of 10. -1 for value (less minis per box) and -1 for not correcting every piece that needed it and was released (Bazooka needs to be 3 for instance)
