This problem has come up in our game.
Please Review and reply with your own thoughts - thanks!

There seems to be a contraversy surrounding the use of the Major
Airlift Card.

Robert maintains that you may only take the forces from ONE
territory and move them to ONE new territory.

I, however, have always taken the card to allow you to move whatever
forces you want from wherever to wherever, hence the Major Airlift.

The card says:

Move any or all forces from one territory to any other territory
(including a City) unoccupied by enemy units.

It does not specifically say ONLY one territory, although that is up
to interpretation.

The designer could have worded it differently if he had intended it
to be used the way I see it, but we all know how hard to figure out
some of these cards and rules can be - some are very vague.

In my opinion, moving a few guys from one space to another is not a
Major undertaking. To me, a Major Airlift is a MAJOR Airlift. It
is representative of a country using every single aircraft at its
disposal to get forces that are bottled up in areas where they are
useless to areas where they can counterattack in weakly defended
enemy areas of help fortify areas that are under siege. If the US
gets this card late in the game, it helps even the odds. If they
get it early, they gain a temporary defense boost but lose the late
game chance. Remember, these cards are the ONLY help that the US
really gets.

I am willing to delay the game to run this by some of the other
forums. I do not want to eliminate another player based on breaking
a rule, even though my House Rule is stated above. All House Rules
should probably be discussed before the game starts. I do not want
a "tainted" victory either.

Should my use of the card be judged invalid, I would like the
opportunity to replay my entire turn from the point right before I
drew the 5th card. This would be fair since I would know what cards
I was getting otherwise (I will still know about the Tanks in
Detroit but there is really no way to exploit that).

However, I hope that I am correct in how to use the card, otherwise
the game is completely slanted toward the Invaders and needs to be
fixed.

Please review my case and get back to the group ASAP.

Thanks,

Steve

We've always played it that you can move units from one single territory to another single territory.

I agree. The card says "one" territory. To say "only one" would be redundant.

Moving all your troops from a single territory is a Major airlift IMHO. A minor airlift would be moving a single unit. Each territory represents quite a bit of land anyway.

I think the game still favors the USA regardless.

I've played this game with the designer, and the airlift let you move units from one territory to one other territory.

I've also never come across any other interpretation than from one to another one territory. Even with only two units at the beginning of the game, that's not too bad for the US as the US can move them from far back to any unoccupied place desired.

Yeah Yeah I screwed up.

Can't argue with someone who has played with the designer.

I am extremely embarassed. I bought this game when I was maybe 10-12 years old and it was my first war game, even before A&A. Me and my friends always played this way.

I put the game away for many years, then played maybe twice while intoxicated in one form or another.

Sold the game and did not play for 8 more years, this is my first time in forever and I guess the House Rule always clicked in my mind.

Please do not think me a complete dumb-ass. I am usually quite smart when it comes to games - maybe it was just wishful thinking. Not to mention getting all fired up in the excitement of being able to wipe out an Invader with one move!

I plan to redo the turn from the moment I drew the card, and still have a chance of killing off Mr. GrogNADS, although I must leave Philly open to do it!

Thanks for the input guys.

"I bought this game when I was maybe 10-12 years old"

Now I feel bad, I got into these GM games when I was already into my 20's - I was hitting the TRU for the annual Toys for Tots and was passing by these tall stacks of games... and said, "Heeeey, wait a minute...". It's lucky for those Tots I remembered to get them stuff too, lol.

Seriously though, don't feel bad, I think everybody's made this kind of mistake - at least you brought it out to make sure.
