Does anyone have any info on Vichy or any other Axis use of the R-35 in North Africa? All I have ever found is reference to the FT-17.
Or any of the other French vehicles in '39-'45?
Vichy had R-35s in N. Africa, also in Syria when the English & Free French attacked in 41.

I wasn't around in the days of set I. Is there justification for this little guy having defense 4/4? I would think the piece should be 3/3 which would make a huge difference. In effect it has better armor than the more advanced Somua since the Somua has "undermanned" negative ability. Whenever I play with/against France in a 1940 game the Renault defense just doesn't "feel" right. This was an outdated tank but in this game it is tough for a Panzer III to crack.

The defensive values are accurate enough ... roughly 40mm of armour translates to armour value 4/4. I have a feeling made a mistake with the attack values though: the R-35 had very poor AT capabilities (12mm at 500m), but the later R-40 upgrade had a much better gun ... that's the one they were probably thinking of.
Interesting sidenote: the Renault had even less crew than the Somua.

Imagine how crowded it would be in that little tin box ;-)

The Renault has always been a bit of a problem child to me. I mean how can we scutinize the thought proccess involved in the stats when our "French R-35" is Romanian?;) TWICE!! Maybe Im a just a little bitter because when it was rare I pulled it 95% of time when buying boosters. I have 8 of them little dweebs.

Playing with them isn't the problem, playing against them is. Point for Point that little tank caused me nothing but grief in the Axis & Allies General
France campaing. Early war the French are very formitable.
As for the Renault haveing Romanian markings; it's fine by me because I make them available on the Eastern Front extending their operational life span. I have enough that I really should paint a few in correct French markings.
P.S. I play with big Tanks every day. 67 tons is big enough right?

If my memory serves me right, I heard a report and saw it on internet news that that the US Army found the remains of a French FT-17 in an Afganistan dump. The remains (hull, engine, turrent, suspension) are being restored at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.

The Australian forces fighting in syria encounted R35's they had to use 25pdrs in a direct fire role to take them out. Boyes anti tank rifle had no effect.
I have seen documentry footage of Aussies taking on R35s.
R35 seems very prolific (almost every front except for pacific unless u call madagascar pacific).

Afganistan royal family purchased a number of tanks before ww2 these included ft17 and R1 (the little sister of the Romanian R2 made by the czechs)

If you want to use R35s in russia u should restrict them to 1941 as romania removed them from the front lines and refitted them with captured 45mm atg guns (romanians captured about 400 of them) back into service 1944 in defence of Romania. Give AT boost use stat line of Chi Ha or Russian A/C.

Hey Rick, I think I still have Doc Atwater's number in my roll-a-dex at work. I havent spoke to him in a couple years, that would give me a stupid excuse to give him a ring. Last time we spoke the King Tiger was still being refurbished in Germany.
OBTW I would not doubt anything they find in Afganistan. Matter of fact I know where you can get a pretty nice T-34. Course the mine field might make it difficult to move.

Someone I know served a year in Iraq, and while there, he and his unit found an upgraded Sherman in a dump. It had 1944 ID plates on it, but it also had an upgraded barrel, turret, and Israeli ID plates. They also found an intact Italian tankette. Unfortunately, as a result of fun bureaucratic rules, neither could be brought back for refurbishment.

the Italians had a few R-35 in Sicily when the Allies attacked.

This maybe the most interesting thread I have read in quite a while.
Also, you guys may want to check this place out.
Take a look at these!

The R-35 was used extensively by the French in the Defence of Morocco and Algeria (limited as that battle was to a few days).
Upgunned versions were used against both the Americans and Germans (although by upgunned I mean the long version of the 37mm gun - which still had not so great stats). The American tankers found it a tough tank to engage, and there were several large scale battles of Stuarts and R-35s.
If you read about the landings by the Americans you should find references to their deployment. In fact the French used the tanks very effectively to repel several of the early American and British Commando and Parachute attacks. Given that their only real opposition was the Stuart tank, then the R-35 was used well in company with French Infantry.
Use of the FT-17 and the Somua was more limited. French Forces that fought initially with the Germans had some of these tanks at their disposal. Some Somua's were encountered in early fighting during the early landings as well.

Gimme some of those 8 tanks you have !!!
I also belive that the Poles had at least 25 R35s during the German invasion. they never saw action, but it would be a good what if senario.
