Many A&A afficianados are quite impressed with the latest addition to the A&A gaming arsenal. There has been a fair amount of praise about the games merits. Very little has been said in the way of criticism.

So...where would you rate "Guadalcanal"? Is this the best of the bunch?

This Poll will be open for a month. I thought I should give folks time to try out the game a few times {or more times!}. I'm assuming some will be getting this as a holday gift.

I will be happy to cast a vote and be critical and/or offer praise as soon as my darn set comes in. My local game store keeps yelling at his distributor and hopefully they will get me my set soon.

Until then...

I plan on casting my own vote after another FTF contest this weekend. Top two options without a doubt. This is the most impressed I've been with any A&A variant. Is is better than Revised? I dunno. Guadalcanal is, I think, the best balanced game. It's got alot going for it.

That's my plan as well. Game balance may be harder to assess than you can do in 1 or even 10 sessions, but you can tell pretty quickly if the mechanics are good, and if the game is fun.

I'm not gonna vote in this poll yet, because it's too soon to tell after having played only three games, but... I like it a lot.

I am still trying to figure out how to use the US. Japan has won all three games so far. In two of those three games, Japan just massed its fleet in the sea zone between Bougainville and New Georgia, built airfields, and counterattacked on turn 4/5 to smash the US fleet and win the VPs. Any advice for the US player?

I bought carriers for U.S. on turn one, built airfields on Gaudalcanal for my bombers. I was able to easily bomb Japan's airfileds with lots of Fighter cover.

Of course If japan knows I am doing this they can build many AA guns, but I think that's part of what makes a good game. You must adjust your play for your opponents moves. There isn't one standard build that makes it a win.

Also, no fleet should be smashed in one turn, especially a large one, and especially if you use your artillery effectively against it.

If you were holding off on voting until later...you better hurry! Polls like these will not be allowed on the new forum.

Though a large group did not take part in this poll; the results are pretty telling. "Guadalcanal" is already being seen as one of the best A&A games to date.

Game on!
